The Greening Up The Mountains Festival is Western North Carolina’s premier spring arts festival with upwards of 12,000 attendees each year. This year’s festival will include artisans, food vendors, beverage arts vendors, and many local community organizations, as well as live music on two stages throughout the day.

Light a Path Meet & Greet Donation Based Workout
Riveroak Fitness is STOKED to be teaming up with the Light a Path team & organization. Light a Path has a really beautiful mission of helping at risk populations including the incarcerated, in-recovery, & at-risk youth. With our mission at Riveroak being to provide a judge free developmental environment, this collaborative event is a donation based workout to raise funds towards truly helping a wonderful cause!

Artist Sean J McAusland is currently exhibiting art works at Trackside Studios and will be working on paintings with oil and pastels in the Studio on Saturdays in April from 10:00 AM to 1:00 PM as well as all day on Tuesday April 16 and Thursday April 18. Come in to meet the artist.
In addition to large oil paintings, Sean also has a series of Mix and Match “Subway Tiles” which are 4” x 6” oil on canvas tiles and can be customized by choosing your color own palette. “Subway tiles” are $40 each.
Also available are original art stationery cards with envelopes, postcards and “mini posters” with prices that range from $6 – $14. All cards and mini posters can customized by choosing the size and color palette of your choosing.

Come celebrate our 35th Pioneer Day Festival on April 27. We have some new activities along with old favorites.
The day’s activities will get under way at 7 a.m. with registration for the 4th Annual Super Leader 5K race at Old Fort Elementary School, 128 Mauney Ave. However, online registration will be available until 8 p.m. Friday, April 26. Registration costs are $10 per youth age 18 and under ($15 on race day); $15 per adult ($20 on race day); and $40 for a family of four ($60 on race day). All proceeds will be used to benefit the school’s Leader In Me initiative.
At 9 a.m. on Saturday, April 27, the Route 70 Cruisers will open their annual Mountain Thunder Benefit Car Show on Commerce Street, behind Old Fort Town Hall. An estimated 200 to 400 classic cars will be on display during the show, which will be held rain or shine, until 2 p.m.The grand prize is a Performance GM 350 engine, and the “Cruisers Prize” is a set of four new tires with a value up to $500, provided by Baker Automotive of Marion. All vehicles are welcome to participate in the car show. All proceeds will benefit local charities. Contact Phillip Poe at 281-798-4805 for more information.
The Health & Wellness Fair is a new component of Pioneer Day this year. Organized by the Old Fort and Catawba Basin Alliance (OFCBA), it will be set up in the old textile mill parking lot on Mauney Avenue between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. and will feature a variety of local health and fitness organizations presenting health informaion for people of all ages. At 10 a.m., the Pioneer Day Festival officially will begin with the bluegrass band Wingin’ It taking the stage in Mountain Gateway Museum’s creek-side amphitheater. Possum Creek Band, another bluegrass group, will perform at 11 a.m., followed by Coy Robinson & the New Mix at 1 p.m.The Foothills Community Band, an all-volunteer, amateur concert band based in Marion, will make its Pioneer Day debut at 2 p.m. on the amphitheater stage, and the always-popular Friendship Dulcimers will play old-time favorites on the museum’s front porch at noon.
Traditional craftspeople will demonstrate their skills throughout the day on Saturday, April 27. Among the crafts to be seen will be spinning, weaving, dyeing, blacksmithing, woodworking, rug braiding, quilting, needlework, apple butter making, doll making, jewelry making, and others. Vendors also will have crafts for sale.
In the food court area around the museum’s outdoor fountain and gazebo, food trucks and vendors will be selling hamburgers, hotdogs, Polish sausage, barbecue, fried-fish sandwiches and fish dinners, funnel cakes, kettle corn, and a variety of other foods and beverages.
Members of the Sons of Confederate Veterans Camp 379 will be encamped on Mountain Gateway Museum’s grounds throughout the festival weekend to display their uniforms, weapons, and equipment, and discuss Civil War camp life. Rounding out the day will be a street dance, featuring live music by the Rewind Band of Old Fort. Join us any Saturday for outdoor activities at the garden. Local youth involved in programming for building life skills, improving literacy and leadership development welcome young people in the area to join them, and we are always in need of adult volunteers to help with mentoring. Involvement in the Shiloh Community Garden also includes the experience of growing produce organically, lessons in permaculture and the science of sustainability, healthy meal preparation, and entrepreneurship. Come join us for the second Race to the Taps of the year! We continue at Sierra Nevada Brewing in Mills River. Early start time of 10:00am for this race with packet pickup starting at 8:30am. See you there!
Over the river and through the woods to Sierra Nevada we go…
The 5k route for the Sierra Nevada race will leave their off-site parking lot (Six Row), go along Old Fanning Bridge Road, on the nature trail system up to Sierra Nevada’s property, though their brewery lot, into back areas not normally open to the public and down the gravel path to the Lower Park on the French Broad River for the awards, food truck and beer!
Due to the terrain of this 5k route, we are not allowing bikes, strollers and dogs are discouraged…but if you do bring your dog, we’ll just ask that you stay behind the pack of human runners.
All runners and all spectators will need to park off of Old Fanning Bridge Road in the Sixth Row parking lot. The Sierra Nevada shuttles will be running from the Sixth Row parking area to the front of the brewery for spectating friends, families, kids and dogs to make their way to the Lower Park area and cheer runners on at the finish line. The shuttle will be available during and after the race for anyone ready to get back to their car in Sixth Row.
Awards will be given to top 3 finishers in multiple age groups for both male and female. Dress to impress…wear a brewery themed costume for the chance to win King or Queen of the Race to the Taps!!
Race bib/packet pick up will be held at Harry’s on the Hill on the Friday afternoon prior to the race (April 26th) and on the morning of the race starting at 8:30am.

Join the Grail Moviehouse and the Asheville Music School for the film, DECONSTRUCTING THE BEATLES: REVOLVER. The Asheville Music School will perform a set from their upcoming performance of Revolver May 2 at the Isis Music Hall.
In DECONSTRUCTING THE BEATLES’ REVOLVER, composer/producer Scott Freiman takes Beatles fans young and old into the studio with The Beatles as they create their seminal 1966 album, Revolver. In many music polls, Revolver is rated the top album of all time. The 1966 album launched a period of studio experimentation for The Beatles that coincided with their decision to stop performing live. With memorable songs, such as “Eleanor Rigby,”“Yellow Submarine,”and “Tomorrow Never Knows,” The Beatles pushed popular music to a place it had never been before. Deconstructing The Beatles’ Revolver explores the groundbreaking production techniques that went into creating this landmark piece of music history. In addition to many of the tracks from Revolver, Mr. Freiman will also explore the creation of two other songs recorded during the same time period, “Paperback Writer”and “Rain.” Mr. Freiman conducts an educational journey into the creative process of The Beatles performances and recording sessions.
