Neo-Pastiche: Changes in American Music is a critical musical gathering featuring presentations by living American composers and performers whose work comes from outside standard academic or popular music contexts. Bringing in a diverse group of musicians from around the country, focusing particularly on New York City and local Asheville artists, the festival will take place April 25th through 28th, 2019 at the Black Mountain College Museum and Arts Center.
The festival showcases the S.E.M. Ensemble which under the direction of Petr Kotik and with the help of pianist Joe Kubera & percussionist Chris Nappi will present large scale works by Morton Feldman, Julius Eastman and John Cage. Other performers include Eugene Chadbourne, Jeff Witscher, Sarah Louise, DeForrest Brown Jr., Nick James Scavo, Jaclyn Miller, Theodore Cale Schafer, Motown Willie, Kimathi Moore & Elizabeth Lang, Anka, and more!
In the spirit of Western North Carolina’s longstanding history as a point of inspiration and creative and collective self-determination, Neo-Pastiche: Changes in American Music hopes to invite a refreshed sense of what contemporary American music can be – where music can be engaged not only in terms of gallery art or popular culture, but also as a discursive field in its own right.

Opener: The Night Spins
Rainbow Kitten Surprise and all five of its members hail from the mountains of Boone, North Carolina. With chilling harmonies, dynamic instrumentation, and introspective lyrics, their genre-defying sound takes influence from artists like Modest Mouse and Kings of Leon as much as Frank Ocean and Schoolboy Q. Independently, they have over 75 Million streams across digital platforms, and notched over 45 sold out shows on their first U.S. headline tour. Their engaging and distinct live performances have led to stand out sets at festivals such as Bonnaroo, firefly, Shaky Knees, Hangout, Sasquatch, and Austin City Limits among others. The band worked with GRAMMY award-winning producer Jay Joyce (Cage the Elephant, Sleeper Agent) on their Elektra debut, How to: Friend, Love, Freefall, available everywhere on April 6th.
Rainbow Kitten Surprise will donate $1.00 to the American Red Cross for every ticket sold to the Tar Heel Sessions. This donation will help people affected by Hurricane Florence.

BoomBox
A little house, a little blues, a little funk, a little rock, and a whole lot of soul blast through BoomBox.
Since first emerging in 2004, founder, songwriter, producer, and multi-instrumentalist Zion Rock Godchaux has been quietly seasoning this simmering recipe to perfection. However, it reaches a boiling point on his forthcoming 2018 album, Western Voodoo [Heart of Gold Records].
At the same time, the Muscle Shoals, AL native stays true to what attracted countless fans in the first place.
“I remain open to anything you would hear coming out of a boombox,” he explains. “There are a lot of different vibes and angles, but it still adheres to a universal rhythm. This new record is the most musical and varied, yet it’s tightly wound in respect to that syncopation. There are only a few rules. It should be heavy groove. It should make you want to move. Overall, I’ve further developed the sound people are used to.”
Following up 2016’s fan favorite Bits & Pieces, the artist found himself at something of a crossroads. Longtime collaborator Russ Randolph amicably parted ways with the band at the end of the year. For the first time, Godchaux would solely produce the bulk of a BoomBox record by himself inside of his new studio, while DJ Harry joined on tour in January 2017. Another first, he even performed live bass on the album, opening up the creative palette dramatically.
“I’ve learned more about engineering and the technical aspects of recording. It’s been a time of soul searching. I can follow any Ideas that I want to. So there’s a lot more organic instrumentation. I’m just trying to develop more sonic real.” Appropriately, he dubs the sound of Western Voodoo, “Dirty Disco Blues.” Within that realm, Godchaux fuses a funky strut with electronic energy and danceable swagger powerful enough to cast a spell of its own.
“You hear about different forms of magic around the world,” he goes on. “The West, in general, has its own voodoo influenced by the blues. That’s what shaped me as a musician growing up in this country. It’s hard to put in the words, but you know it when you hear it.”
You hear it in everything that BoomBox has done thus far. Over the course of four albums, the group has become a streaming favorite with numerous tracks cracking a million plays on Spotify. Moreover, they’ve made audiences groove everywhere from Electric Forest and Hangout Music Festival to High Sierra Music Festival. To welcome DJ Harry into the fold, they performed 75 shows in 2017, with that number expected to grow in 2018.
“Harry picked up everything in a really short amount of time,” he explains. “The parties are just as hot, if not hotter. The music is getting tighter. He stepped in and kept the plane in the air.”
In the end, the new music kicks off the brightest and boldest chapter yet for Godchaux. “Our best side is somewhat medicinal,” he leaves off. “All of the rhythms, melodies, and frequencies add up to these healing properties. I hope people feel rejuvenated and re-focused on some level when they hear us. That’s Western Voodoo.”

The Appalucians
https://www.theappalucians.com
ARTIST INFO:
The Appalucians play music from the mountains of Western North Carolina, featuring spirited songwriting, sublime harmonies, and a layered interplay between dobro, guitars, harmonica and banjo. The band is the musical union of two couples Jay Brown and Aditi Sethi and Angie Heimann and Cas Sochacki who met at their kids’ preschool, gradually realized their seemingly cosmic musical alignment, and decided they better start a band. Their debut album “Bright Hills,” recorded at Higher Ground Studio in Birmingham, AL, released in early summer 2018, has flavors of mountain folk, 70’s folk-rock and barroom twang.
Bill Kopp of Mountain Xpress Album Review writes – Bright Hills, their debut album reveals a charming and close-knit vibe within seconds of its opening track. Two of the group members — bassist/harpist Aditi Sethi and guitarist Angie Heimann — engage in a dual-lead harmony vocal on “Bloom in the Seed.” The two allow their vocal lines to wrap around each other, always remaining within the confines of harmony yet bounding effortlessly within that context to create a sound that’s somehow both precise and relaxed…. as fine and note-perfect as the playing is throughout Bright Hills, it’s the vocal blend that is most likely to win the hearts and minds of listeners. Heimann and Sethi’s voices seem custom-made to work as a team. There’s a playful tone in songs like “47 Main” that’s irresistibly appealing…
