Day Hike (and camp on) the Appalachian Trail
May 17 @ 10:00 am – May 19 @ 4:00 pm

Day Hike (and camp on) the Appalachian Trail

May 17-19th, 2019

Are you a confident day hiker who is not too into carrying a huge pack, or maybe not so confident on spending a night alone in the woods?

Take advantage of this trip with guide-supported and high mileage solo day hikes with guided camping.

Cost:
$500/person.

Sign-up details:
In order to sign up for this trip, please go to our Day Hikes calendar and select the date of the first day of the trip (May 17th). You will find the trip listed there. Once you have signed up for the trip, we will be emailing you with a form to fill out which includes a waiver, health form, and information about gear needs and dietary restrictions. We will need to get this form back from you at least 1 week before the trip.

You may also sign up by giving us a call at 828-713-5451. Also feel free to give us a call or email us if you have questions regarding the trip. We can be reached by email at [email protected].

Itinerary:
The hike will meet at our new location in Hot Springs, the “Appalachian Trail-er”. The address is 200 Lance Ave, Hot Springs, NC. Feel free to book accommodation here the night before your trip by giving us a call, or choose somewhere else nearby.

You will park your vehicle in Hot Springs and then take a shuttle around 11am to Davenport Gap where you will start your hike; guide will meet at designated points approximately every 5 trail miles to help with resupply, meals, and overnight accommodations. Hike concludes by walking back to your parked car in Hot Springs.

Friday: You will climb up from Davenport Gap (1975′) to the top of Snowbird Mountain (4363′) where a guide will meet you for the night, 7.1 miles.
Saturday: After descending Snowbird, a long climb to the scenic peak of Max Patch (4629′), then a gradual descent to Lemon Gap (3550′), 14.3 miles.
Sunday: Climb over Walnut (4305′) and Bluff Mountains (4868′) to descend to Garenflo Gap (2500′); gradual rise and descent into Hot Springs (1326′) to conclude, 14.4 miles.

Hike will end at your parked car, and typically wraps up mid to late afternoon on the final day.

Cancellation Policy:
Payment in full is required to hold your spot with 15% of the total cost non-refundable ($60). Refunds (minus the 15 percent) can be issued up until 2 weeks prior to departure time.

Within 2 weeks, a refund will be issued if Blue Ridge Hiking Company decides to cancel the hike due to severe weather. Remember, we hike rain or shine. :)

What to bring:
Food: BRHC provides all on-trail food for the trip. When your guide arrives, they will pass out your food you will need for on trail hiking, as well as maps, compass and trail guide. Guide will meet you at designated road crossings in order to resupply water, food, and first aid if needed, and then meet you at the final location where you will be expected to help the guide load gear and food to the campsite (only about .2 a mile at the maximum).

Community Gear: BRHC provides all community gear for the trip, including water filters and back-up chemical treatment, camping stoves and fuel, bowls/spoons/cups, trowels/toilet paper/hand-sanitizer, first aid kit, and map/compass.

Gear Rentals: BRHC offers the following 4 main pieces of gear for rent for no extra cost:

1. Backpacks – We ask for your torso measurements in order to fit the pack appropriately to you; male and female specific packs available.

2. Tents – We have single-person tents and two-person tents. Let us know if you’d like to share with a friend or are willing to share with another hiker. We will do our best to accommodate these requests.

3. Sleeping bags – We strongly encourage you to provide your own sleeping bag if possible, but we do have sleeping bags for rent if necessary.

4. Sleeping pads – These will insulate you from the ground and provide some cushion and comfort.

Personal Items: You are expected to bring your own clothing, personal gear (such as headlamps and water-bottles), medications, and approved optional items. Generally, comfortable walking shoes are better than heavy hiking boots. Please do not pack any cotton – if it gets wet, it does not dry quickly and will not keep you warm. Athletic clothes are a good option. You will need only ONE outfit to hike in and ONE outfit to sleep in, plus a rain coat, and a warm layer. You will NOT need a new set of clean clothes each day. You will NOT need any make-up, hair products, scented products or deodorant. Just a toothbrush! Your guide will teach you how to brush your teeth in the woods and enjoy going all natural :)

If your guide does an exceptional job, you may show your appreciation with a tip.

May 17 @ 5:00 pm – 9:30 pm
Downtown After 5 Asheville

Downtown After 5, presented by Prestige Subaru, kicks off on Friday, May 17 from 5-9:30pm on North Lexington Avenue in Downtown Asheville. This free summer concert series is the 3rd Friday of the month May through September.

Headliner: Eric Gales Band (takes the stage about 7pm)

Hailed as a child prodigy and frequently compared to Jimi Hendrix, Eric Gales has recorded 18 albums. His 2017 album, Middle of the Road, featured Gary Clark, Jr and Lauren Hill and reached #4 on the Billboard Top Blues Album Chart. Gales unique hybrid blues/rock sound has put him on many to guitarist lists. In fact, Carlos Santana, Dave Navarro and Joe Bonamassa consider Gales a favorite.

Support: Alvin Youngblood Hart’s Muscle Theory (takes the stage about 5:30pm)

Known as a “musician’s musician,” Alvin Youngblood Hart’s praises have been sung by everyone from Bob Dylan to guitar gods Eric Clapton and Mick Taylor. After two decades on the road, Alvin continues to delight audiences worldwide, whether as a solo performer or with the eternally rockin’ Alvin Youngblood Hart’s Muscle Theory.

Each summer the Asheville Downtown Association partners with five local nonprofits to sell wristbands at the event. Each group receives a grant of $2000. May’s partner is Asheville GreenWorks, enhancing the environment and quality of life for all residents of Asheville and Buncombe County through community-based, volunteer-led environmental conservation projects and education programs.

Thanks to our sponsors: Prestige Subaru, Budweiser of Asheville, Empire Distributors, Pisgah Brewing, Hi-Wire Brewing, Gillespie Dental, ExporeAsheville.com, Go Mini, Renaissance Asheville Hotel, Crooked Tree Creative, Carolina Hemp Company, CPI Security, Theology Pub, Mellow Mushroom, Asheville Music Hall, 98.1 The River, Alt 101.1, Asheville Scene, Dig Local, Able Rentajohn, Asheville Color & Imaging and Strada Italiano.

Lots of local beers on tap including: Pisgah Brewing, Sierra Nevada, Hi-Wire Brewing, Asheville Brewing Company, Catawba Brewing, French Broad Brewing, Green Man Brewery and Bold Rock Cider, as well as beers from Western North Carolina and regional and national brands. Wine, soda, water and locally crafted Devil’s Foot beverages are also available for purchase.

We’re serving up plenty of local yumminess with food vendors: Delia’s Tea Time, D.O.G.S., FroZen Monkey, Gypsy Queen Cuisine, Kernel Mike’s Kettle Corn, Moe’s Original BBQ and Sunshine Sammies.

Dan has performed professionally for the past ten years in a variety of settings. His musical repertoire includes Swing, Bossa-Nova, Blues, Bebop, Latin-Funk and Love Songs/ Ballads. Dan’s “flying fingers” and eloquent chord solos have earned him a reputation as one of the finest guitarists in the region.
