Grovewood Village is housed in the historic weaving and woodworking complex of Biltmore Industries, a noteworthy enterprise in the history of American Craft and textiles, founded by Edith Vanderbilt and two inspired teachers, Eleanor Vance and Charlotte Yale. At the height of its success in the late 1920s, Biltmore Industries had a total of 40 looms in steady operation, producing bolts of some of the finest handwoven wool fabric in the country. Orders were shipped as far as China and Uruguay, and customers included the likes of Thomas Edison, Henry Ford, Helen Keller, and several U.S. presidents and first ladies.

The Asheville Area Arts Council and the Explore Asheville Convention & Visitors Bureau have teamed up to bring you AshevilleArtsAlive.org, a robust online resource to help showcase our area’s creative offerings and reach a broad audience of residents and visitors.
The Asheville Arts Alive website offers two main features: a calendar of events and a directory of arts amenities, artists, arts organizations and creative businesses. Visitor-oriented listings may also appear on ExploreAsheville.com, the area’s official tourism website that attracts 4+ million unique users annually due to the advertising efforts of the Buncombe County Tourism Development Authority.
We understand that posting on such a populated website can be intimidating. On Thursday, August 16, 2018, the Explore Asheville team will be leading an info session on just that topic. We will walk you through the process of posting on the AshevilleArtsAlive.org step by step. It is important to the AAAC and Explore Asheville that local artists are utilizing this site to better promote and expand their creative businesses.
Join us in the Thom Robinson and Ray Griffin Exhibition Space on Thursday, August 16, from 4 – 5:30pm and get all of your Asheville Arts Alive questions answered.

3 Course, Mediterranean (Greek) Curated Pairings Dinner
In addition to our standard menu, join us every Thursday evening for a curated 3-course dinner. Each course has been crafted by Executive Chef, Josh Chapman and has been paired with carefully selected wines by Manager, Rene Teran
3 courses with 3 different 3oz wine pairings, $57
1st Course
Stuffed Grape Leaves with Quinoa, Pine Nuts, Parsley and Pickled Onions
Domaine Skouras Almyra Chardonnay 2016
This fresh but spicy Chardonnay starts with tropical fruit, citrus and floral aromas leading into a great fruit and acid balance. The minerality keeps the wine fresh and lifted, giving it a food-friendly edge.
2nd Course
Olive Oil Grilled Octopus with Chickpea Puree, Tomatoes, Feta, Olives and Oregano
Domaine Zafeirakis Malagousia, Tyrnavos, Greece 2016
The Malagousia is a blend of two vineyards: sandy clay and clay limestone. One gives lime green pepper, white peach and acidity; the other offers mid-level acidity, fat and muscaty aroma. The pale wild ferment lends to a less floral, soft botanical profile of fresh basil with palate awakening freshness.
3rd Course
White Wine Poached Seasonal Fish with Sundried Tomato Glaze, Gigantas, Feta, Lemon, Arugula and Crispy Capers
Troupis Fteri Moschofilero 2017
Wine-making at low temperatures helps preserve all the typical yet sensitive aromas of the Moschofilero grape. As a result, Fteri Moschofilero is an intensely fragrant wine combining the bouquet of night-blooming jasmine, pomegranate and citrus fruits. Its excellent aroma and sharp taste make it a wine that can be enjoyed as an aperitif as well as an accompaniment to dishes such as pasta with basil, chicken a la crème, grilled prawns and pies.

To celebrate Homebrewed Christianity’s 10th year of podcasting, we wanted to do something a little special for this edition of #theologybeercamp. This year, we will be hosting Theology Beer Camp in an actual brewery, in HBC’s home state.
The theme for this edition of Theology Beer Camp is Resurrecting Prophetic Christianity. We’ve got activist theologian Robyn Henderson-Espinoza joining us for the fun, as well as Lindenwood University prof and deacon of dialectical theology W. Travis McMaken, Bill Leonard, and a bunch of our podcasting friends…
In addition to extremely nerdy talks, hanging out with other theology nerds just like you, you’ll also be getting some of the best craft beer in the Southeast. And in case we forgot to mention, all of the beer you can drink is included in the price of your ticket. One more time for the people in the back – your ticket to Theology Beer Camp gets you free beer from Habitat Brewing Co. for the entire weekend!
And make sure you join our friends from Brew Theology for an awesome pre-event: https://www.eventbrite.com/e/brew-theology-pre-theology-beer-camp-event-tickets-46305749744?utm-medium=discovery&utm-campaign=social&utm-content=attendeeshare&aff=escb&utm-source=cp&utm-term=listing

Interested in Community Rights and why Big Corporations have more rights than we do? This film showcases the work of CELDF and the Community Rights movement across the US.
“We the People 2.0” is about the loss of democracy in the United States. The story unfolds through the eyes of rural people and sacrifice zones in urban communities who have faced decades of toxic dumps, drilling and mines in their communities. These people come to understand that the reason they can’t stop the destruction is that the US has become an oligarchy, run by the corporate few who ignore the rights and will of the people. These people are frontally challenging our corporate state; thereby saving nature and themselves. Thomas Linzey, a nonprofit attorney’s inspiring words shows how, we, the people, can turn this around and lay claim to our democracy. This movement is building as you read this, not just in this country but around the world; this film shows how and where it all began.

Free yourself from the frantic and embrace the joy of slow…
Are you constantly striving to keep up with life’s busy expectations? It’s easy to feel consumed with the desire to “succeed” and “acquire,” and miss the simple opportunities waiting for you to slow down: a walk in the forest, sharing laughter with family, a personal moment of gratitude…
Once upon a time, it became clear to Brooke McAlary that the key to happiness was discovering a simpler, more fulfilling existence. She put the brakes on her stressful path and reorganized her life to live outside the status-quo, emphasizing depth, connection, and meaningful experiences. Alongside Brooke’s affirming personal stories of breaking down and rising up, Slow provides practical advice and fascinating insights into the benefits and challenges of the slow life, such as:
–Decluttering to de-owning
–Messiness to mindfulness
–Asking why, to asking where to now?
Slow is an inspirational guide on creating a life filled with the things that really matter and is meant for anyone seeking peace, meaning, and joy in their otherwise rapid lives. Slowly–of course.

Her debut novel, “Bloodroot” (2010), was named among Booklist’s Top 10 Debut Novels and received the Weatherford Award for fiction. Greene will speak about her writing process and what gives character to her Appalachian novels.
This event is limited to 165 guests. Cost is $20 for general admission and FREE for Bridge Club members.

Asheville, North Carolina-based photographer and author Tim Barnwell’s will give a talk on his book Great Smoky Mountains Vistas: A Guide, with Mountain Peak Identifications, for What to See and Do In and Around the National Park. When he started his mountain identification project along the Blue Ridge Parkway he had no idea that it would take seven years to complete his Blue Ridge Parkway and Great Smoky Mountains projects.
The Smokies book includes mountain peak identifications from overlooks along Highway 441/Newfound Gap Road, in Cataloochee Valley, Cades Cove, from the Foothills Parkway and Blue Ridge Parkway, and aerial views of the park and its environs. It also covers area around the park worth visiting including Max Patch, the Foothills Parkway, the Cherohala Skyway, Maggie Valley and Gatlinburg, Tennessee. The book is a truly unique project, the only one of its kind and scope in the country, and possibly the world.
Mr. Barnwell’s other books include, The Face of Appalachia: The Appalachian Farm in Photographs, On Earths Furrowed Brow: The Mountain Farm in Photographs, and Hands in Harmony: Traditional Crafts and Music in Appalachia, and Blue Ridge Parkway Vistas: A Comprehensive Identification Guide to What You See from the Many Overlooks.

The Lung Buster Time Trial Series is a five-part competitive time trial racing series of cycling events in Western North Carolina held with the intent of providing all participants a professional racer experience, no matter how fast you are. All levels and abilities of cyclists are invited to participate!
Our unique mix of different racing environments allows riders of different strengths and focuses to level the playing field amongst competitors. Also, having seven separate events means that one poor showing won’t decimate your opportunity to do well in the series as a whole. So as to not leave out any cyclist: whether you’re an elite time trailer or a recreational rider on your road bike wanting to prove your merit in our Merckx/Standard division, we have both categories.
Lung Buster: The very name embodies pushing one’s mind and body to its aerobic limits. And that’s exactly what we expect to see. This series is a great test for participants of all abilities, and a great way to gauge your standing and progress in your cycling endeavors. With awards, medals, cash, bragging rights, and course records all on the line, you better not leave your inner competitor at home! With the kinds of hard efforts and fast times we’ve seen in the Lung Buster Series over the years, we feel that such braggadocio is warranted, and expect 2018 to bring an abundance of the same.
We are excited to partner with the Dry Ridge Museum to bring you an evening of storytelling with Dr. Delanna Reed. Dr. Reed, a member of the Jonesborough Storytellers Guild, is a professor with the Department of Communication and Performance at East Tennessee State University.
Join us as we bring folk tales of southern Appalachia to life through spoken word, weaving in stories of the Vance family. David Vance Sr. and his wife Priscilla Brank settled in the Reems Creek Valley in the 1790s. Their farm eventually totaled almost 900 acres including 18 enslaved people. These stories celebrate the traditions and cultures of the people who called the North Carolina mountains home in the early 1800s.
This program is FREE and will be held at Wild Mountain Bees at 23 Merrimon Avenue! Space is limited and reservations are strongly encouraged. To reserve a space call the Vance Birthplace at 828-645-6706. Enjoy light refreshments or purchase some local honey to enjoy later!
