Trail of the Lonesome
Oct 5 @ 6:00 pm – 8:00 pm
French Broad River Brewery

Doug Gibson and Alicia Vanhook Gibson grew up in Big Stone Gap, Virginia where Powell Valley cuts into the Appalachian mountains. Their music, with its emphasis on vocal harmony and strong songwriting, reflects the fiercely independent and rich cultural heritage of their Appalachian roots.

Doug and Alicia met in high school. Fifteen years later, after moving to opposite sides of the country, losing contact, getting back together, breaking up, and growing up, the two settled into life as a married couple in Knoxville, Tennessee. After returning to the mountains in Brevard, NC, they are now following a long time dream by creating music as Trail of the Lonesome, a name they chose in tribute to the little mountain town that originally brought them together.

Trail of the Lonesome is available for public and private shows up to four hours long including a mix of original and cover music.

Soapbox Derby – Race for the Gold
Oct 5 @ 6:30 pm – 10:00 pm

Why should kids have all the fun? Our adult only soapbox derby is the only one of its kind in the region and is a fabulous way to show your community spirit. Have you ever dreamed of owning your own NASCAR team? This is your big chance as companies, churches, schools and other organizations build their own cars to compete or sponsor independent teams. What a unique and high impact promotional opportunity!! Local sportsmen can build their own cars, too (refer to the rules page located on rutherfordtown.com for details)

Race organizers carefully pick two equally matched cars to compete in side by side, do or die heats until a winner is declared. Don’t be surprised if you see a water gun or two or other crazy antics as teams do whatever they can to make it to the end of the race course and to the top of the winner’s podium.

As much fun for the fans as it is for the participants, this events appeals to both young and old and will produce a ton of smiles!

Matt Mayes and John Meyer of Jupiter Coyote Duo Show
Oct 5 @ 7:00 pm – 11:45 pm

Matthew B. Mayes is the co-founder of the popular Jam rock band Jupiter Coyote. As the principle songwriter and multi-instrumentalist for the band for the past 27 years, his songs are filled with eclectic charters, heartache, and soul searching while musically running the gamut from rock, southern boogie, bluegrass and country rock. He has been playing music for over 35 years, played over 5000 shows and sold over a half a million records and downloads independently while traveling all over the US and beyond; writing cult hit Coyote favorites like Crazy Women, Rose Hill, Ship In The Bottle, Real Thing, Gravel Road and Becky along the way. His songs have been in films, commercials, and TV programs. He has recorded 18 albums, two solo records, and four with his Prog side project The Raptor Trail.
In the course of their 27-year history, Jupiter Coyote has played over five thousand shows, traveled everywhere and done just about everything a touring band can do. The innovative group has independently sold close to a million CDs, tens of thousands of downloads, and who knows how many bootlegs they cut loose to fans for free. JC is brand name, and a pioneering cornerstone in the jam band scene. They have been called the new twist in southern rock and they deliver it with a relaxed, worldly view. Their sound has been labeled “Mountain Rock” — a mixture of Southern Appalachian boogie, bluegrass-infused, funk-rock.
Matt is currently out playing full band shows and duo shows, like the one coming to King Street, with current Jupiter Coyote guitar player, John Meyer. These duo shows are a real treat for any JC fan out there as hearing all the stories behind the songs in a smaller, intimate setting is quite compelling.

“The Carburetors make noise with skill, humor and, I dare say, a little class. These guys play American driving-down-the-road music, good like bluegrass, poorly behaved like rockabilly.” — Brandon Reynolds, Style Weekly

Andy Wood at The Grey Eagle
Oct 5 @ 8:00 pm – 11:00 pm
The Grey Eagle

Andy Wood at The Grey Eagle

ANDY WOOD is recognized as part of the forefront of this generation’s top influential guitarists.

Currently touring as a solo guitarist and mandolinist along with working on a host of additional musical projects, Andy is also performing live with his own band promoting CAUGHT BETWEEN THE TRUTH AND A LIE, the double album which showcases his vast musical influences and abilities.

Andy has toured professionally with a wide range of acts, including most recently Gary Allan, LOCASH, Rascal Flatts, Scott Stapp, and Sebastian Bach. Looking for an outlet for styles other than hard rock, Andy also released his debut solo album A DISCONCERTING AMALGAM. This instrumental record covers a broad range of genres including fusion, rock, metal, and acoustic bluegrass. Andy Wood is known for blurring the lines of preconceived genres.

Andy spent most of his childhood playing and competing in bluegrass festivals. Touring the bluegrass circuit with his cousin and grandfather provided Andy with the necessary exposure that helped refine and sharpen his skills. Andy and his cousin held various state championship titles.

At the young age of sixteen, Andy finished second in the WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP MANDOLIN CONTEST in Winfield, Kansas. All of this was accomplished before Andy discovered the world of electric guitar at the age of eighteen.

Fast-forward a few years. Andy’s curiosity and appreciation for music drew him into the world of electric guitars. The new instrument was familiar due to his experience with acoustic instruments, but at the same time, allowed him to manipulate his sound in ways never before possible. He began studying the styles of Nashville session players such as Brent Mason and Albert Lee.

It was not long after Andy had immersed himself in new styles such as jazz, swing, fusion, and rock. Andy began to study other guitar greats such as The Dixie Dregs, Eric Johnson, Eddie Van Halen, Joe Satriani, and Steve Vai. The young guitarist began incorporating their influences into his own style.

At the age of 22, Andy was drawn back to competition in the form of GUITARMAGGEDON, a guitar contest sponsored by Guitar Center. Andy was a face in the crowd of 3,400 other contestants, but he made his presence known by being crowned champion of this prestigious tournament.

Not long after winning Guitarmaggedon, Andy became a founding member of the rock group DOWN FROM UP. They have toured with Seven Dust, Drowning Pool and 10 Years.

As Andy climbs to greater and greater heights, his technical proficiency and tasteful chops makes Mr. Wood a force to be reckoned with, and a name you will not forget. If you find yourself “Caught Between The Truth and a Lie,” you’ll need all the “Charisma” you can get your hands on!

Appalachian Renegades
Oct 5 @ 8:00 pm – 10:00 pm
Triskelion Brewing Company

The newest rock band to come out of Asheville blends an old school gritty blues rock with big guitar riffs invoking the spirit of some of our favorite rockers from Stevie Ray Vaughn and Warren Haynes to Dan Auerbach and Jack White. Fueled by Graeme Adams’s vocal efforts and saxophone interludes, Ryan Ledford’s soaring guitar solos, and supported by the sonic back bone of seasoned professional drummer David Corbett and the creative bass lines of Tink Lawing, the band packs a punch right from the get go and keeps delivering the heat – dropping big rock song after big rock song.

Formed in the summer of 2017, the band is focusing on building a strong repertoire of originals while mixing in fan favorites cover songs sure to keep you locked in from beginning to end. Look out for the Appalachian Renegades as they come roaring into a venue near you in 2018. You’ll want to say you saw these guys before they made it big and you don’t have much time!!!

Malcolm Holcombe in Concert
Oct 5 @ 8:00 pm – 11:00 pm
The Down Home

https://www.malcolmholcombe.com/

On the North Carolina side of the Southern Appalachians, the land still retains its secrets. It’s a place of paradoxes, where poverty is handed down from one hardscrabble generation to the next in towns passed over by the New South progress that gives a city like Asheville its bourgeois charm. It’s a resilient pocket of wilderness where a small band of Cherokee once disappeared into the misty hollers to wait out the white man’s ire, back in the deep woods where old growth timber blocks out the sunlight and compass needles sometimes spin crazily and the trappings of civilization give way to things beyond human understanding.

On the cusp of releasing his 13th studio album — “Come Hell or High Water,” out XXX on Singular Recordings — singer-songwriter Malcolm Holcombe is a both a part of and apart from those Blue Ridge hills, a Southern folk golem brought to life by the deeper mysteries that give these hills so much of their folklore.

His songs belong in the same Western North Carolina echelon of mysteries like the Brown Mountain Lights or the ghostly apparitions along Helen’s Bridge or the phantom choir of Roan Mountain — things that surpass conventional explanation but summon forth a combination of awe and primal longing, an ache to understand the great questions of the human condition.
Malcolm may not have the answers to those questions, but his songs are drawn from the same waters that begin as a trickle in the deep woods: wild, untamed, filled with the whispers and roars of all the mysteries and wonders those hills contain. And like the region’s otherworldly manifestations, they come from a place that transcends easy understanding, even by their creator.

Lera Lynn

Throughout her career — a nearly decade-long run filled with three album releases, a career-shifting appearance and soundtrack for HBO’s True Detective, hundreds of shows on both sides of the Atlantic, and a sound encompassing everything from Americana to stark indie rock — Lera Lynn has balanced her fierce independence with a string of collaborations.

She’s written songs with T Bone Burnett and Rosanne Cash. She’s recorded albums with full bands (2014’s The Avenues, hailed by outlets like Rolling Stone and American Songwriter) and smaller lineups (the experimental, NPR and New York Times-approved Resistor, which Lynn co-produced at her Nashville home). On her fourth album, Plays Well With Others, she teams up with eight different duet partners and seven co-writers, resulting in her most diverse, collaborative work to date.

Plays Well With Others is a unique duets album — one in which nearly every song is completely co-written and co-sung. Peter Bradley Adams, John Paul White, Dylan LeBlanc, Andrew Combs, Rodney Crowell, Shovels & Rope, JD McPherson, and Nicole Atkins all make appearances, working alongside Lynn not only to perform these songs, but to create them, too.

“Songwriting can be such a personal process; in the past I have tended to do it alone,” Lynn admits. “With this record, I wanted to get outside of my own writing corner. I have access to a great community of writers and singers in Nashville, and it became an exciting challenge to sit down with some friends and say, ‘Let’s write a duet — one that maybe hasn’t been written before — and then record it together.’ This was an important thing for me to do as an artist: to open myself up to other people and have some fun.”

Lynn recorded Plays Well With Others at John Paul White’s studio, Sun Drop Sound, in Florence, Alabama. There — with Lynn, White, and the Alabama Shakes’ Ben Tanner all serving as co-producers — she tracked nine songs in a series of live takes. Looking to add some sonic framework to an album whose tracklist was vast and varied, she only used acoustic instruments, layering upright piano, strings, percussion, acoustic guitars, and creative sounds into arrangements that nodded to artists like Roy Orbison, George Harrison, Neil Young, John Lennon and Tom Petty. The result is an album that’s at times more stripped-down than The Avenues and far less amplified than Resistor, while still shining a light on Lynn’s striking voice and unique blend of American music.

Appropriately, the nine songs on Plays Well With Others tackle issues of the heart, from love to lust to loss. On the album’s haunting opener, “Same Old Song,” Lynn and Peter Bradley Adams swap harmonies from opposite sides of a broken relationship, both trying to summon up the courage to sever ties completely. “What is Love” — a gorgeous folk song recorded with Dylan LeBlanc — finds its two singers questioning their own worth, while the Rodney Crowell collaboration “Crimson Underground” unfolds like a conversation between the self and the voice of temptation. There’s also a coed cover of TV on the Radio’s “Wolf Like Me,” performed with Shovels & Rope; a tribute to the glory days of 1960s Roy Orbison with Nicole Atkins; a kinetic, psychedelic “Breakdown” with Andrew Combs; and a pair of duets with John Paul White, who first sang with Lynn during a handful of shared shows in 2017.

“John’s a great vocalist and really great harmony singer, which makes him the perfect duet partner,” Lynn says of John Paul White, who kicked off his career as one-half of the Civil Wars. “During our tour together, we started covering ‘Almost Persuaded,’ which I’d heard Conway Twitty and many others perform. By the time we recorded the song, we’d also written ‘Lose Yourself’, which is a song about the love-strickens’ last attempt at retaining their fleeting individual identity.

With Plays Well With Others, Lera Lynn cements her own identity as both creator and collaborator. On an album filled with Grammy winners, country icons, folksingers, and Americana heroes, it’s still her star that shimmers the brightest, shining light on the newest phase of an eclectic, ever-expanding career.

Reuben Bidez
When Reuben Bidez sings, he opens his heart and projects a vulnerability that draws you into his intimate portraits of lovers facing the pleasures and woes of romance. “I want to write songs that explore real emotions,” he says. “Songs that awaken people from their slumber of distraction and make them feel something.” On Turning to Wine, his first EP, he’s as good as his word. He delivers a collection of inviting melodies and insightful lyrics that illuminate the mysteries of the soul, with a vision informed by sorrow, uncertainty and the warmth of unconditional love. The songs are a record of the transitions he’s been going through since he moved to Nashville from Atlanta. “The record is a snapshot of the changes I’ve been experiencing in my marriage and my music, for the last two and a half years. They’re more honest and open than anything I’ve written before.”
