Nathan Alling Long presents The Origin of Doubt: Fifty Fictions
Jan 24 @ 6:00 pm – 7:00 pm
Malaprop's Bookstore/Cafe

The Origin of Doubt is a collection of flash fiction that represents the best of the genre. Each story is a gem, a glimpse into moments of yearning and unexpected perception, instants that many of us might otherwise miss. Nathan Long writes with a confident and assured hand, his sensibility generous and insightful. These are stories of male and female desire, of love and longing and loss. They are told to us like secrets, each simple moment a revelation that generates surprise and wonder. Reading them is sheer delight. –Patricia Smith, The Year of Needy Girls

Long is a writer of focused and developed gifts, of a fecund imagination, at home in crossing genres as form and content make their evolving demands. These works span the gamut from traditional to queer trans-genre forms, marvelous to behold in times like these when political discourses and abuses of language have sunk to unforeseen lows. –Timothy Liu, author of Of Thee I Sing (Poetry Book-of-the-Year Award from Publishers Weekly) and Don’t Go Back To Sleep

The stories in The Origin of Doubt are superb examples of realism–accessible in style and replete with nuance, exuding an omniscient wisdom that is profound yet humble. Long has a special knack of presenting an oblique or mundane situation and making it momentous; stylistically, his use of significant detail is sharply effective, and his figurative language rich and resounding with meaning. –John Parras, author of Fire on Mount Maggiore

We ask that you purchase the books you want to be signed at our events from Malaprop’s. When you do this you are not only supporting the work it takes to run an events program, you are also telling the publishers that they should keep sending authors here. Can’t make it to the store for the event? Call us or order the book on our website in advance, and we’ll get it signed for you. Make sure you write your preferences in the comments if you purchase online.

Sisters In Words: Fiction, Nonfiction & the Creative Process
Jan 24 @ 6:30 pm – 9:00 pm
Lenoir-Rhyne University Asheville

Lenoir-Rhyne University in Asheville’s Thomas Wolfe Center for Narrative and the Yale Association of Western North Carolina will present “Sisters in Words: Fiction, Nonfiction, and the Creative Process.” Best-selling authors and sisters, Elizabeth Kostova and Victoria Johnson, will read from their latest works, Kostova’s “The Shadow Land” and Johnson’s “American Eden: David Hosack, Botany, and Medicine in the Garden of the Early Republic.” A discussion on the creative process will follow, facilitated by Laura Hope-Gill, coordinator of the Thomas Wolfe Center for Narrative, as well as a question-and-answer session with the audience and a book signing and sale. The event will take place on Thursday, Jan. 24, at Lenoir-Rhyne’s 36 Montford Ave. location in Asheville. Doors will open at 6pm, readings will begin at 6:30, and the event is free and open to the public. Refreshments will be served.

“The Shadow Land,” authored by Asheville-based Kostova, chronicles the travels of a young American woman to Bulgaria. The narrative unravels into a sumptuous tale from an incident of an accidentally taken piece of luggage. Kostova’s novel takes the reader through the terrains of grief and mystery while celebrating at every turn the power of story to awaken, fascinate, and heal. Her 2005 work, “The Historian,” was the first debut novel to reach number one on The New York Times bestseller list.

Johnson’s “American Eden: David Hosack, Botany, and Medicine in the Garden of the Early Republic,” a finalist for the 2018 National Book Award, illustrates a noted 18th and 19th-century physician’s dream of creating the nation’s first botanical garden. Physician to Alexander Hamilton and Aaron Burr (and present at the fateful 1804 duel between the two), Hosack drew in his medical practice on his vast knowledge of medicinal plants. His work earned him the admiration of Thomas Jefferson and James Madison, among other luminaries. Johnson is an associate professor of urban policy and planning at Hunter College in New York, N.Y.

“This event deeply reflects the passion of the Thomas Wolfe Center for Narrative, which focuses on development and process in creative work,” said Hope-Gill, Lenoir-Rhyne professor and coordinator of the university’s Master of Arts in Writing program. “Kostova and Johnson meticulously merge inquiry, creativity, and intellectual curiosity,” she said. “The results are two thrilling and very different works of history and literature, and this event promises to be deeply insightful and exciting for all of us who strive to follow our creative impulses to their most excellent ends.”
