Over the next year, she stumbles back into the dating world, where “romance” ranges from weird and creepy to absurd and comical. It seems nothing can help Mary’s growing cynicism, until the charm and innocence of a five-year-old boy unexpectedly brings a new outlook on life and love. This heartwarming one woman show offers a hilarious and modern alternative to the old standards of the holiday season.

Bird In Hand Live
Dec 28 @ 8:00 pm – 10:00 pm
Balsam Falls Brewing Co

The road less traveled has always been the way for husband and wife duo Bird in Hand. Bryan and Megan Thurman call the Smoky Mountains of Western North Carolina home and the region is directly reflected in their music. Bird in Hand is upbeat and new while still rooted in the traditions of American folk.

The two have played all over the Appalachian region as well as across the country, and share an on-stage chemistry that demands attention. They need to be seen live to understand the meaning of ‘Appalachian Thunder Folk.’

You can find their debut EP, Due North, online

Keturah & The Blown Glass Band
Dec 28 @ 8:00 pm – 11:55 pm
185 King Street

It would be impossible to put Keturah and The Blown Glass Band into a box. You can’t call them rock or country or funk. You can’t call them folk or blues or soul. Their music resides somewhere in between them all. What you can say is that the songs will move you, the band will groove you and hopefully you will leave with joy in your heart and your spirit renewed.
Keturah is a songwriter from Brevard NC. She grew up lucky enough to be surrounded by music. Gospel in the church, country in the car, and rock and roll dance lessons in her grandmothers kitchen all melded together and have had a heavy influence on her songwriting. She writes from the heart and sings from the soul. She believes music is an expression of love and a healing force for us all.
She is backed by The Blown Glass Band. Carolyn Bane on bass and harmony vocals, Howie Johnson on Lead Guitar and Richard Foulke on Drums.

Ross Hollow w/ Larkin, Joel Ragan and Ships at a Distance at The
Dec 28 @ 8:00 pm – 11:00 pm
The Grey Eagle

Remember this is a ticketed event! Purchase a head of time for $10.

Approximate schedule (possibly earlier):

Joel Ragan – 8:15
Ships at a distance -9:00
Larkin – 9:45
Ross Hollow – 10:30

Ross Hollow

Ross Hollow’s music makes you want to stand up, dance , sit down, laugh, tap your toes, hum along, snap your fingers, listen to the words, drink beer, attend church, smell the rain, enjoy life more. It has the kind of catchy melodies and verve that keeps you humming the songs long after you’ve heard them for the first time. With roots in New England, the Southwest, Chicago, The Carolinas, Mississippi Delta, and Indiana, Ross Hollow’s music can transport you to all these places and more, with driving bass funkadelic, solid dobro twang, flamenco guitar riffs, wailing harmonica, scintillating ebony and ivory stylings, backwoods banjo rolls, and the backbeat that just won’t stop.
Stuart Ross, the lead singer and songwriter for the group, was born in New Mexico, lived up and down the Appalachian mountains for over 15 years, and now resides in Indianapolis. He writes songs at a crossroads combining southwestern americana, appalachian folk music, blues, and modern indie music.

Ross Hollow has an exciting full length album in the works, their first professional recordings taking their music to the next level. This special show at the Grey Eagle will feature new songs never heard from North Carolina fans and old favorites. Stuart will be traveling with a few band members from Indianapolis and featuring several local talents on stage. Expect an eclectic mix and exciting show.

Larkin

Larkin is a singer/songwriter and native of NC. She coins her sound as ‘sentimental rock’ and writes music that invokes the sadness & humor inherent in a romantic twenty-something. She hopes you can relate.

Ships at a distance

Like many bands, Ships at a Distance formed in the creative pressure cooker of a college dorm room in 2011. Fusing the jam band and alternative rock sensibilities of Spencer Ayscue (vocals, guitar, mandolin), the alt-country and stadium pop leanings of Ben Hardie (vocals, guitar), and the meadow folk and vocally-driven tastes of Hannah Nelson (vocals, keys), the trio has nestled itself in the genre that one listener has described as “Appalachian folk rock.”

After playing shows around Davidson for several years, Ships at a Distance released their full length debut The Odds of It All in the summer of 2015, a ten-track album characterized by powerful vocal harmony, churning acoustic guitars, and bare songwriting. With lyrical duties shared by Nelson and Ayscue, The Odds of It All is tugged at both ends by the band’s folk roots and alternative pop influences, with tracks featuring synth and electric instruments alongside traditional ones like the banjo and the mandolin.

With an emphasis on songwriting and space, Ships at a Distance toggles between the simplicity of songs like the two-chorded “Free Like the Fish,” and the fullness of Nelson’s powerful “Coagulate.” While the song “Spenster Jones” is playful and jaunty, the The Odds of It All is buoyed by the sincere songwriting of songs like “Friend in Need” and “Shade Grown,” or the existentially resonant, Whitman-inspired “Wind & Waves.” “Oh me, oh life, oh fool that I am,” laments Nelson, whose acrobatic vocal harmonies ground the album and punctuate the haunting and psalmic “By the Waters.” Between Hardie’s spare acoustic guitar, Ayscue’s plaintive writing, and Nelson’s affecting voice, Ships at a Distance have carved out a varied, yet characteristic sound.

“Our music has one foot in the mountains and one foot in the city,” says Ayscue, a native of Appalachia who has spent time working the open mic scene in urban centers like Seattle, Boston, and Madrid. Hardie, a Texas transplant, often pulls in the sounds of outlaw country musicians like Townes Van Zandt, and finds himself most at home fingerpicking early Jackson Browne tunes on his acoustic guitar. Nelson, also a native-born Texan, has spent the last two decades in North Carolina and draws inspiration from the tight, sisterly harmonies of acts like Joseph and The Staves. Having gotten their start covering bands like Mumford and Sons, the Avett Brothers, and Fleet Foxes on the college stage, Ships at a Distance often works to blend the traditional with the modern.

With a new release rumored to be on the horizon, Ships at a Distance’s brand of pop folk is made to be enjoyed live where their close vocal harmonies and intimate songwriting are closer than ever.

Joel Ragan

Joel Ragan captures moments and expands them to an emotion. A simple stain becomes a thought about something deeper. His music does the same, draws you in and takes you a little deeper. Joel draws on influences from acoustic, punk and emo music. Joel lives in Asheville and continues to write and play music in the area.

Tagged every style from jamband and southern rock to acoustic folk and bluegrass, Dangermuffin has consistently shattered all categorizations and defied pigeonholing. While “Roots-Rock Americana” might be the most fitting and recurring label for the band, no designation perfectly characterizes Dangermuffin and its sound. “We’re the American Experience, which is a melange of styles, including roots, rock, bluegrass, reggae, island, and many other influences. We’re multi-genre.”

Hailing from the musically rich Blue Ridge Mountains, Fireside Collective is an up-and-coming newgrass outfit that has exploded on the national roots music festival scene.

EchoMix Presents – STIG

https://www.stigfunk.com/

STIG is an all-instrumental progressive jazz funk band consisting of 5 best friends from a myriad of places both geographically and musically. “We share music with each other during the day, and weave those news ideas into our shows at night.” Their improvisational nature paired with tight communication and 2 years of playing and growing together creates an exploratory and engaging live show experience.

STIG tunes are all original and are always written as a group to fuse each member’s genre-crossing influences. Since forming in Boston while attending Berklee College of Music, STIG has been touring the country non-stop, playing high-energy shows, and catering their funk to the vibe and energy of the crowd.

The band recently relocated to Asheville, North Carolina after falling in love with the town while on tour. An Asheville home base means the chance to dive deep into writing music full time, putting it out there and playing it. “We’re stoked to be immersed in the Asheville music community!”

From opening for the likes of Aqueous, Nicki Bluhm and Dynamo to raging the late night stage at Some Kind Of Jam festival, STIG is constantly working to bring their funky instrumental sound to as many smiling faces as they can. Be on the lookout for new tour dates, music videos, and updates from the band!
