Zydeco/Cajun coming in hot from Louisiana!
Horace Trahan is a world-renowned Cajun and Zydeco artist who can pull a mean accordion and belt out vocals that will gives one chills. Trahan started taking accordion lessons when he was 15 from his cousin, Felix Richard.
At 18, Horace hit the road with Cajun/Zydeco legend D.L. Menard, who took him to New York, Boston, Chicago, California Canada, France and the summer Olympics in Atlanta. In 1996, Horace and Menard recorded a CD on Swallow Records and Horace released his own CD, Ossun Blues, for the same label. Six years later, he recorded Get On Board, on the Zydeco Hound label followed in 2001 by That Butt Thing, whose title track became a minor hit in the zydeco/roots music world.

The Cooperative Extension of Polk County is hosting our annual berry plant sale. This year, the Cooperative Extension director has chosen four varieties of blueberries, two varieties of raspberries, two varieties of strawberries, and one blackberry variety that have proven to specifically thrive in the North Carolina Foothills.

Orders will be accepted for plants now through February 22 and will be available for pickup in mid-March. Proceeds from this fundraiser go to support the activities, classes, and research that make the Cooperative Extension such a vital part of the Polk County community. We have numerous dogs who are looking for a date this Valentine’s day. They are hoping this will turn into a long term commitment, but just a short fling is okay too! Our dogs are looking for someone who has some time to take them on a walk and maybe share a cookie with them? Or steak? We will have our eligible bachelor and bachelorettes dating profiles uploaded next week so you can see who would be the best match for you for the day! If you have time to come down to the shelter to meet our crew between now and then, that would be great also!
This will take place Feb. 14th. You will pick up your date between 9:30am and 11:00am and return to the shelter by 3:00pm that afternoon.

Don’t worry….for all you cat lovers we will also have a photo booth set up so you can have your photo made with our adoptable cats and maybe spend some time playing and brushing them!

We are supporting Bounty & Soul’s work providing healthy food for our local community by providing them with metal silverware for their food sampling events. These wiill prevent the wastage and expense of disposable spoons and forks.
Bounty & Soul provide samples of delicious plant based foods and education for those members of the community who are receiving donated healthy food. Rather than use plastic spoons and forks for the demonstrations and sampling, Bounty & Sould are finding ways to be more green and sustainable, and we want to help.
We are aiming to collect 80 sets of metal or durable bamboo small spoons and forks through the month of February. Please bring washed used or new silverware to our store and enjoy our thanks and a browse and a cup of fair trade coffee.

For the first time in a long time, Maggie Valley will be hosting a skating rink at the Maggie Valley Festival Grounds! Open dates are tentative to change. Due to variable temperature changes during the season, the surface will be synthetic and available to enjoy in even warm days.
