YWCA Early Learning Program Open House
Dec 1 @ 1:00 pm – 3:00 pm
YWCA of Asheville Early Learning Program

*FIRST FIFTY KIDS TO ARRIVE RECEIVE A PRIZE*

You are invited to an open house on December 1, 2018, from 1-3pm in the new NC-Pre-K Classrooms at YWCA Asheville’s YWCA Early Learning Program.

We hope you will join us as we enjoy speakers, music, refreshments, and children’s activities. Meet some of our amazing ELP teachers and learn more about the NC Pre-K program.

And best of all, there will be raffle prizes for up to fifty children!

We are celebrating the completion of our Early Learning Program expansion. Thanks to funding from Buncombe County, YWCA Asheville’s Early Learning Child Care Program renovated and expanded four classrooms this summer, giving us the capacity to serve an additional 42 children. Additionally, thanks to funding from the Community Foundation of WNC, we have also completed a much-needed kitchen renovation, allowing us to better serve healthy meals to our children, staff, and foster grandparents. The next phase of the expansion is now underway: renovating the playground to incorporate more natural elements, and commissioning a mural honoring Thelma Caldwell, Executive Director of YWCA of Asheville from 1965-1975.

If you or someone you know is in need of high-quality child care for their pre-school-age child, please refer them to us! If they register their child, you AND they will receive a $50 gift card! For more information or to register your child for Early Learning or NC Pre-K, call Denise Purcell, Director of Early Learning Program at 828-254-7206 x 106.

Alcohol-Free Medicine Making
Dec 1 @ 2:00 pm – 4:00 pm
Blue Ridge School of Herbal Medicine

Learn to leave stigma behind and make potent alcohol-free herbal remedies!

There are great reasons to have alcohol-free herbal remedies in your apothecary, yet many herbalists have only the most basic understanding of how to make them. Whether you are serving a community that avoids alcohol for health or religious reasons, work with pregnant folks, support people in recovery, or want to help with disaster relief, alcohol-free remedies are a critical part of a well-rounded practice.

In this class, we’ll discuss the different communities that avoid alcohol, western herbalism’s relationship to alcohol-free remedies, and the teacher’s own research on alcohol-free extraction methods. You’ll learn a novel approach to making alcohol-free remedies at home, and have the opportunity to taste tinctures and alcohol-free extracts side-by-side.

You will leave this class with a firm grounding in the importance of alcohol-free herbal alternatives, how to talk to clients or communities who are avoiding alcohol, and techniques to make your own extracts without using alcohol. Additionally, each person will have the opportunity to make their own alcohol-free extraction to take home.

Cost: $30

Mandala of Protection: How to Set Healthy Boundaries
Dec 1 @ 2:00 pm – 4:30 pm

***PLEASE SEE REGISTRATION DETAILS BELOW!***

Are there people in your life that ask too much, that behave in ways that don’t feel good to you? Do you find it challenging to say “NO”? Are you confused about the best ways to talk about your needs? Worried about how to set limits with family as you head into the holidays?

Please join me for this BY-DONATION WORKSHOP in which we’ll learn important concepts that will help you get clarity in your relationships and improve the quality of your life. We all need to be able to set boundaries about how we spend our time, who we spend it with, and the ways we interact with others. Many of us were not taught how to prioritize our needs. I can support you in learning these valuable life lessons!

In my therapy practice I find that many people need help figuring out what boundaries are best for them and how to effectively communicate and uphold those boundaries with the people in their lives (including family members, partners, work colleagues, bosses, etc.). By helping others in these situations I have developed highly effective, easy to learn lessons that help us to do this important work.

In this workshop you will learn information to help you:
*Understand what your needs are
*Develop appreciation for the importance of prioritizing yourself
*Learn helpful ways to express your needs to others (including precise language to use!)
*Deal with any backlash or pushback from setting boundaries
*Explore making difficult decisions about relationships with family

Workshop will be led by myself, Justina Prenatt, MS, LPCA, a holistic and family-focused therapist with lots of experience helping folks who have experienced challenging childhood dynamics, trauma, and navigating the tricky territory of creating authentic relationship in a super busy and separation oriented society.

I offer this workshop by donation because it is important to me that this work be accessible to all people. There is no minimum donation required, and I do welcome gifts in lieu of financial donation, so feel free to ask if you want to contribute something unique!

I welcome any questions to help you get clear if this event will be helpful for you, so please let me know.

TO REGISTER: please email your name and phone number to [email protected]. I do need this email confirmation and not just a YES on this invitation page, so thank you in advance for taking the time to email me!

About the Book:

Getting woke is hard. As this couple is discovering under 45’s regime, it takes more than listening to NPR on our daily commutes and watching Jon Stewart cameos on our phones in bed while we sip craft beer from artisanal glassware made by at-risk women on another continent to make us global citizens. That won’t stop Alexandra and Michael from trying, though.

Based on the successful McSweeney’s column, Amongst the Liberal Elite takes readers on a cross-country road trip with Alex and Michael, romantic partners whose voices will resonate with fans of shows such as Portlandia, Parks and Recreation, Full Frontal with Samantha Bee, and Last Week Tonight with John Oliver. The couple decides to use their tax refund to reconnect with their fellow Americans via a cross-country road trip and, more specifically, better understand how Trump won the election. In a quest to visit The World’s Largest Frying Pan (of which there are six in the U.S.) Alex and Michael embark on a journey marked with personal and societal realizations. Arguments about topics ranging from mom-shaming to misogyny related to their pet cat, unsuccessful attempts at yoga meditations in small spaces, and anticlimactic touristic attractions that deepen their gloom about the nation, bring Alex and Michael clarity about what it means to resist. Amongst the Liberal Elite is the political satire we’ve all been waiting for — one that offers comic relief from ourselves.

About the Author & Art Designer:

Elly Lonon, a member of the Liberal Elite herself, is still recovering from growing up in a red state. Born and raised in North Carolina, she moved to Manhattan for graduate school and to pursue a career in the music business. Weary from consistent marginalization by the patriarchy, she left both the industry and NYC, opting to work for a not-for-profit and moving to the suburbs of Jersey where living near a Superfund site promptly gave her cancer. Once in remission, she read far too many self-help books, learned to embrace life, and abandoned her previous career to write and procreate.

Joan Reilly’s work was featured most recently in RESIST!, a comics newspaper edited by Francoise Mouly and Nadja Spiegelman, and in Draw the Line (drawthelinecomics.com), an online anthology of comics promoting political action. Her comics and illustration have been published in many anthologies and literary magazines over the last two decades. She is a co-editor of The Big Feminist BUT: Comics About the IFs, ANDs & BUTs of Feminism, and created illustrations for the “Ask Marilyn” column in Parade magazine for over ten years. About the Guest:

Michelle Lodge is not a ventriloquist (much to the dismay of her father, who did actually encourage the profession). She was however raised in the small town of Leslie, Michigan by a magician and a painter. Ever since she was able to read she was glued to comics, and the obsession has never ended. School, drawing, more school and a lot more drawing. Countless hours of practice and two art degrees later, Michelle is able to draw in a wide range of styles. Her favorite of these styles is the dark and shadowy themes of noir. She currently works on The Black Wall and other freelance projects, including her upcoming, semi-biographical webcomic blog on life and the hilarity of motherhood. In the future she hopes to continue working on noir comics, as well as illustrate children’s books. She resides in Asheville, North Carolina with her husband Aaron and their daughter Coral.

For the last 24 years, the Boys & Girls Club of Henderson County has supported young people with caring adult mentors and life-changing programs that help kids:
* Achieve in school and prepare for careers
* Stay healthy and fit
* Make positive personal decisions

We are so grateful for the work they do!

The Cube of Truth is a peaceful static demonstration akin to an art performance. This demonstration operates in a structured manner that triggers curiosity and interest from the public; we attempt to lead bystanders to a vegan conclusion through a combination of local standard-practice animal exploitation footage and conversations with a value-based sales approach.

Masks, signs, and outreach literature are provided. Black upper clothing appropriate for the weather is essential, and please bring a fully charged laptop or tablet if you have one. If you are bringing a laptop or a tablet, please download the following:
