The Cooperative Extension of Polk County is hosting our annual berry plant sale. This year, the Cooperative Extension director has chosen four varieties of blueberries, two varieties of raspberries, two varieties of strawberries, and one blackberry variety that have proven to specifically thrive in the North Carolina Foothills.
Orders will be accepted for plants now through February 22 and will be available for pickup in mid-March. Proceeds from this fundraiser go to support the activities, classes, and research that make the Cooperative Extension such a vital part of the Polk County community. We are supporting Bounty & Soul’s work providing healthy food for our local community by providing them with metal silverware for their food sampling events. These wiill prevent the wastage and expense of disposable spoons and forks.
Bounty & Soul provide samples of delicious plant based foods and education for those members of the community who are receiving donated healthy food. Rather than use plastic spoons and forks for the demonstrations and sampling, Bounty & Sould are finding ways to be more green and sustainable, and we want to help.
We are aiming to collect 80 sets of metal or durable bamboo small spoons and forks through the month of February. Please bring washed used or new silverware to our store and enjoy our thanks and a browse and a cup of fair trade coffee.

Winter can be the most beautiful time of the year at Chimney Rock. Leafless trees make for expansive views of Lake Lure and the Hickory Nut Gorge. The sky is clear; you’re likely to find a quiet spot to sit and enjoy the peacefulness. You may even see a critter scamper by you in the forest. Capture that special moment or scene on your camera, enter it in our Winter Wonders Photo Contest and tell us about it. We’ll use the winning entries on our website and Facebook album, and you’ll win some fun prizes. Photos must be taken within the Chimney Rock section of the Park.

For the first time in a long time, Maggie Valley will be hosting a skating rink at the Maggie Valley Festival Grounds! Open dates are tentative to change. Due to variable temperature changes during the season, the surface will be synthetic and available to enjoy in even warm days.

Begin the journey by meeting at the Asheville Museum of Science to see Spriggly’s Insect Exploration Station. This exhibit space features a rotating series of interactive installations focused on the fascinating world of insects. Currently installed is an exhibit highlighting the habitat needed for insects during winter and inclement weather, titled, “Where do Insects Hide When it is Cold Outside?” While at the museum, enjoy a special lesson in bees and pollination, along with seed bomb making. After the museum, the journey continues to the Blue Ridge Parkway Visitor Center to see other nature exhibits, walk a short trail, and learn more about pollinators.
At the final stop, visit Whistle Hop Brewing Company for a pint of beer or a non-alcoholic beverage of your choice. The brewery features select drafts which use fruit flavors and/or honey in the brewing process; both ingredients would not be possible without pollinators. While enjoying a drink, we will discuss the many ways pollinators impact the food and beverage industry. After a drink, the tour finishes with transportation back to the Asheville Museum of Science.
The tour is three hours starting at the Asheville Museum of Science with round-trip transportation back to the museum. The tour is open to all ages and is family friendly, with tickets at $85 per adult and $75 per child. The ticket price includes all educational talks, seed bombs, museum admission, one drink, and transportation. Discounts are available for active and retired military service. A limited number of scholarships beginning at $1,000 each will be awarded to graduating Buncombe County high school seniors pursuing a career in the performing arts. Submission deadline for 2019 scholarships is 5:00 p.m. on Friday, February 15, 2019. (Submission of an application does not guarantee an award.)
Who can apply for the Emerging Artists Fund Scholarship?
Students graduating from high school during the current school year are invited to apply. Applicants must currently be residents of Buncombe County, must intend to pursue a career in the performing arts, and must receive a recommendation from a teacher, instructor, or mentor.
Areas of talent include: Music/Instrumental; Music/Vocal; Music/Both instrumental and vocal; Theatre/Dramatic Arts; Spoken Word/Poetry; and Dance.
