Q: Can I donate more than $25 and buy more than $2,500 worth of medical debt?
A: YES! The more you donate the more people we can help. If we pay off all of WNC’s medical debt we will start buying debt that belongs to veterans.
Q: How do I get my Awesome ZaPow Swag after I make my donation?
A: You come to our fundraiser event at ZaPow on Thursday, March 7th from 5:30-7:30 pm.
Q: I can not make it to that amazing fundraising event. Can I stop by some other time to get my cool swag?
A: YES! If you can’t make it to our awesome event, stop by zapow anytime during the duration of our fundraiser to pick up your thank you gift.
Q: I do not live in Asheville. Can you mail me my swag/thank you gift?
A: No. We can’t afford to pay for the shipping & packing for all of the swag and we feel weird charging for it. So, if you are out of town. We ask that you consider donating for that super warm fuzzy feeling of knowing that you are helping people being crushed by medical debt.
Q: I LOVE THAT ZAPOW IS DOING THIS! Can my brewery, business, bakery, store, etc. donate swag/thank you gifts to help lure more donations?
A: YES! We would love to expand our Thank You gift offerings. If you would like to donate swag for us to give away to donors, email [email protected]
Q: Who qualifies for debt forgiveness ?
A: We are working with RIP medical debt. RIP buys and forgives “portfolios” of medical debt from health care providers and from the secondary debt market, which allows them to forgive thousands of people’s debts at once. RIP is not yet able to handpick and forgive personal medical debt for individuals. They’re working on it.
When they purchase a portfolio of medical debt, they abolish debt for those who:
Earn less than 2x the federal poverty level (varies by state, family size).
Debts are 5 percent or more of annual income.
Facing insolvency — debts are greater than assets.
Q: Who is RIP Medical Debt?
A: RIP Medical Debt is a 501(c)(3) charity that has abolished $120 million in medical debt for about 60,000 Americans.
Those who benefit from their medical debt relief face no adverse consequences and will not be taxed on the gift.
RIP donations deliver “a lot of bang for the buck,” so $100 can forgive $10,000 in debt. Here is their website https://www.ripmedicaldebt.org/about/

CDS LEARNS: Discussions on Education and Parenting featuring The Parents We Mean To Be by Richard Weissbourd
Join Kim Broshar, Lower School Principal at Carolina Day School (CDS), Peter Sullivan, CDS Lower School Assistant Principal, and Barb King, CDS Lower School Counselor for a discussion of the book, The Parents We Mean To Be: How Well-Intentioned Adults Undermine Children’s Moral and Emotional Development, by Richard Weissbourd.
Weissbourd argues incisively that parents–not peers or television–are the primary shapers of their children’s moral lives. Weissbourd’s ultimately compassionate message is that the intense, crisis-filled, and profoundly joyous process of raising a child can be a powerful force for parents’ moral development. Weissbourd is a child and family psychologist on the faculty of Harvard’s School of Education and Kennedy School of Government.
