Edwin McCain, Maia Sharp & Phillip Lammonds | Songwriters Series
Nov 2 @ 7:30 pm – 9:30 pm
Peace Center

Crooning voices, soulful guitars, and rollicking pianos bring heartfelt lyrics and magical melodies to life in the brand-new Peace Voices Songwriters Concert Series. Led by Greenville favorite Edwin McCain and accomplished songwriter Maia Sharp, each concert brings a new guest singer-songwriter to the Upstate for a one-of-kind performance. Join us this season in Genevieve’s theater lounge for this intimate listening room experience.

Phillip Lammonds
Raised in the Appalachian foothills of the Carolinas, Phillip Lammonds has a way of elevating life’s ordinary moments with the turn of a phrase and the lift of a just-right melody into soulful, poetic perfection. Lammonds began writing songs just after college when he formed The Blue Dogs, along with his buddies Hank Futch and Bobby Houck. He recently signed a publishing deal with Curb Records in Nashville and has written songs with, or for, artists like Darius Rucker, Lee Brice, Edwin McCain, Blake Shelton, Craig Morgan, Josh Turner, and Hootie and the Blowfish.

Edwin McCain
Called the “great American romantic” by The New York Times, Edwin McCain has built an enviable career over the past 20 years. His enduring love songs and wedding must-haves “I’ll Be” and “I Could Not Ask For More” have become two of the biggest love songs in the history of pop music. 2018 marks the 20th year of the hugely popular “I’ll Be,” which topped the Billboard charts in 1998 and has proven to be a timeless classic over the past two decades. After recording his mega hits and experiencing the success that comes with a television show (Flipping Ships), McCain now performs upwards of 100 shows annually throughout the US.

Maia Sharp
Maia Sharp wears many hats. She has had her songs recorded by The Dixie Chicks, Bonnie Raitt, Trisha Yearwood, Keb’ Mo’, Cher, Edwin McCain, and Art Garfunkel. She produced McCain’s album Mercy Bound and, most recently, two songs for Garfunkel’s retrospective double album, The Singer. Sharp has six solo releases, and her latest duo project is Roscoe & Etta, with writing/production partner Anna Schulze. Each release has led to extensive touring throughout the US and UK, and appearances on Mountain Stage, Acoustic Cafe, World Cafe, NPR’s All Things Considered, CBS This Morning and NBC’s Today.

“Bob Dylan’s career has lasted the better part of fifty years now. That’s pretty remarkable. What is more impressive is that Dylan has remained not only active for almost all of that period, but controversial. He has never gotten by on sentimentality or nostalgia. He has never repeated his successes. For better or for worse, Dylan has always pushed his work ahead.

“Bob Dylan is as great a songwriter – ah, let’s not beat around the bush – as great an artist as America has produced. But he’d be the first to tell you that he is part of a long line, one link in an endless chain. You can follow his influence backward or forward according to your own inclination. Or you can spend a long time just listening to Dylan’s five decades of contributions. Wherever you go into it, and whatever you get out of it, your time will be well spent.”

The concept of scaling down obscure and beloved Beatles tunes hatched during a conversation Peggy Ratusz shared with Jonathan Pearlman several years ago. They figured, with all the tribute and specialty shows taking place around the country, no one had truly done much with Beatles tunes, other than copy them verbatim. Pearlman has been brainstorming arrangements and Ratusz tests them out during their many acoustic shows together. Encouraged by the applause they receive each time they do their versions of classics like Oh Darlin, Two Of Us, Back in the USSR, I’ll Follow the Sun, they decided it was time to put the finishing touches on these songs and present them in a special show. Because the two of them grew up listening to, learning and playing Paul Simon tunes, they determined it to be a no brainer, to throw some of his greatest hits into this special night, bridging the acoustic sensibilities of Simon with the rock and roll aesthetic of the Beatles. Their buddies Eric Congdon on guitar and vocals and Grant Cuthbertson on upright bass along with Micha Thomas on kit and percussion, will add the missing links to the arrangements and play key roles in bringing their concepts/arrangements to fruition! For ONE NIGHT ONLY: “Bridge”, Paul Simon meets the Beatles will soothe, move and groove you!

Hendersonville, NC based guitarist Eric Congdon has a low-key virtuosity. His style radiates both skill and charm. Whether playing solo or with a small ensemble, Congdon’s forceful yet delicate style doesn’t flaunt as much as it insinuates. The N.C.-based Congdon has been playing for 30 years. Congdon counts Tommy Emmanuel and Rev. Gary Davis among his influences. His latest album is called “Acoustic Wanderer.”

Grant Cuthbertson, now residing in Flat Rock, NC, has been in integral part of the music scene in Asheville for over 30 years. He is one of the main reasons why it thrives as it does. He wears many hats and provides the area’s most notable venues with quality sound equipment. An accomplished bassist both electric and upright, Grant’s love of all things Latin and Jazz as well as Blues, Swing & Gypsy Jazz, has made him one of the MOST sought after players in WNC.

Guitarist and virtuoso, Jonathan Pearlman’s (aka, JP) influences are far-reaching, absorbing Lennon/McCartney, Hendrix, Clapton, and Motown. Jazz-fusion bands of the early 70’s were also influential, like Mahavishnu Orchestra, Weather Report and Frank Zappa. “Alien Music Club” is a music production and creative organization he developed more than 10 years ago. He also hosts the weekly Alien Music Club Jazz Jam at Barley’s Taproom in Asheville every Thursday night. “It’s a great opportunity to meet and share musical ideas with some of the best players while at the same time mentoring young musicians!”

Austin, Texas transplant, Peggy Ratusz has been pulling from the cream of the Asheville music crop since moving here in 2002. This “ruby throated” chanteuse has been a finalist in the International Blues Challenge in 2008, 2010 and 2016. A winner or runner up in the Mountain Xpress’s ‘Best of’ Poll for 9 years in the Blues category, (3 years straight 2015, 2017 & 2018), she won in three categories in the 2016. (Best Vocalist, Best in Blues and Artist Who Gives Back). She’s opened for Tedeschi-Trucks Band, Geoff Atchison, the Beach Boys and the recently departed Denise LaSalle.

Where would most any notable act in the area be without drummer/percussionist, Micah Thomas? He plays with panache and with the heart of an old soul. An affable and charming young man, his professionalism and skill are what make him an “in-demand” and “go-to” player. Brushfire Stankgrass, Liberated State are just two of the groups he spearheads and/or co-created. Currently working with Jesse Barry and the Jam, he also sessions and moonlights with Eric Congdon’s jam band.

Nicki Bluhm
Nov 2 @ 8:00 pm – Nov 3 @ 1:00 am

Nicki Bluhm

Compass Records is excited to announce the release of renowned singer/songwriter Nicki Bluhm’s new album, TO RISE YOU GOTTA FALL out June 1. To celebrate the announcement, Rolling Stonepremiered the tle track yesterday, hailing the song as “a blast of Memphis soul.” TO RISE YOU GOTTA FALL as recorded in Memphis at the legendary Sam Phillips Recording studio and features two co-writes with Ryan Adams and a Dan Penn cover. For these live band analog sessions, Bluhm brought in producer Matt Ross-Spang (Margo Price, Jason Isbell), and the studio band included Will Sexton (guitar), Ross-Spang (guitars), Ken Coomer (drums and percussion), Al Gamble(Hammond B3), Rick Steff (piano) and Dave Smith (bass), with Reba Russell and Susan Marshall (background singers), Sam Shoup (string arrangements) and various special guests.

“It was the very first song we tracked,” Bluhm told Rolling Stone, “and Ken just started playing the groove and the band slowly started to drift in. Ken is such a present musician, and he’s listening to the words and reading the room and the vibe…There’s a line in the song that says, ‘I went looking for some perspective, so I knocked on my mama’s door,’ and he just hit the drum — the rim — like a knock, which brought a playfulness and lightness to the song. I love Will’s guitar playing, too. It’s so understated, but he makes himself known. It’s like the old saying goes: ‘The young bull charges down the hill, but the old bull takes his time.’ These musicians were tasteful; they’re all old bulls full of experience and class. Having a string section arranged by Sam Shoup was the icing on the cake. Memphis had melted into my California soul.”

After six years with her band the Gramblers, and recent high-profile collaborations (Phil Lesh, Infamous Stringdusters, Ryan Adams), Bluhm wrote the life-chronicling songs for TO RISE YOU GOTTA FALLover a two-year period, during which she got divorced and moved to Nashville, TN. The album is a chronicle of her state of mind following these deep and fundamental life changes.

“These songs are quite personal,” Bluhm says. “They are the conversations I never got to have, the words I never had the chance to say, and the catharsis I wouldn’t have survived without.”

Bluhm’s divorce, along with the need to challenge herself, inspired the West Coast na ve to make her spur-of-the moment, cross-country move to Nashville in 2017.

“Nashville was inspiring because of all the songwriting going on here,” Bluhm says. “When I would come to Nashville on writing trips it was just percolating… it was intoxicating. So I very hastily, in a matter of days, decided to move. I just had this gut feeling.”

Ross-Spang happened to be mixing a record in Nashville at the time and they met up and hit it off immediately.

“I really needed someone who was going to take the reins and have a vision for the album and he really did,” Bluhm says of meeting Ross-Spang. “My ex-husband had been my musical director, co-writer, and producer on all my records except one and I was looking for someone to step into that leadership roll, which Matt did very gracefully. I was looking for a clean slate; the only baggage I wanted to bring into the studio were the words to the songs I was singing. I wanted it to be a fresh experience; I didn’t want to even have history with anyone in the room that would pull me into old habits or ways of thinking. So we agreed we’d record in Memphis.”

Once settled in Sam Phillips Recording, the sessions revolved around tracking live with an ace band assembled by Ross-Spang.

“We really just recorded live and we didn’t do that many takes of each song,” Bluhm says. “The final versions we ended up with were all one take. It was really refreshing to go analog. It minimized over thinking and second guessing, forced us all to stay in the moment and play from the heart. Sam Shoup did all the string arrangements and when he walked in the room I thought he was a housepainter; he was the most understated, unlikely suspect. That was the thing about Memphis that was cool… not a lot of egos, just people making music for music’s sake. Throughout the session there was a lot of listening and trusting. Matt really spends me curating his sessions and who he decides to bring in; he knows how to keep the vibe right. What you are hearing is, as Jerry Phillips would say, ‘not perfection but captured moments in time.’

“I had lost my partner in so many ways,” Bluhm continues, “my musical partner, my life partner, my creative partner, and all of a sudden I was left on my own, to start my own engine. It was really intimidating and scary,” she says “but I had support from my management, my agent, my friends and family, and ultimately I just had this guttural drive that I didn’t even know I had in me. I was on autopilot, ready to move forward and take the steps I had to take to keep moving forward. When the album finally comes out it’s going to be like setting a caged bird free.”

Bluhm will be touring this year and beyond in support of TO RISE YOU GOTTA FALL. The confirmed tour dates are below with more to be announced soon.

LOOK: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K168ib7ltTc

Amanda Anne Platt & The Honeycutters are on tour with their latest album, a self-titled disc released June 9, 2017 on Organic Records. Lyrically driven, the songs of Amanda Anne Platt & The Honeycutters blend the band’s old-school country roots attitude with their shared influences of rock and folk. Amanda says of the album, “I think it’s just about life and all that that entails. Including but not limited to death, strangers, birthdays, money, leaving, arriving, seasons, corruption, and love.”

“This is a band that does everything right,” says Goldmine’s Mike Greenblatt. “Platt deserves all that might come to her over this, her fifth (and best) album. Backed by pedal steel, electric guitar, keyboards, bass, drums, percussion, and vocal harmony, it’s Platt’s show as she writes, sings and co-produces. Complete with lyrics of introspection with the kind of words you can chew on long after the album ends, it also works on a lighter level by dint of the fact that it just sounds so damn good. Go as deep as you want. It’s all good, as they say.”

Based in Asheville, North Carolina, Amanda is a storyteller by nature with an incredible band backing her. Performing along with Amanda Anne Platt, The Honeycutters are Matt Smith on pedal steel and guitar, Rick Cooper on bass, Josh Milligan on drums and harmony vocals, and Evan Martin on keys and guitar.

There is an empathetic and charming wit ingrained in Amanda’s songwriting. She has a knack for accessing a deep well of emotion and applying it to her story-telling, whether she is writing from her own experiences or immersing herself into the melody of emotions in another person’s life.

“She’s soothing (even in the hurtin’ songs) and sobering (except for the drinkin’ songs) and nuanced in a way that I think tops even those rather famous ladies of the moment named Margo and Kacey… I’d be hard pressed to find a finer string of recordings from any band working in the classic country/mountain tradition in these last five years,” writes Music City Roots’ Craig Havighurst.
