Fine Arts Theatre

THE SAMUEL PROJECT
Director: Marc Fusco
Language: English
92 Minutes

Thursday, March 28 at 7:00 pm
Friday, March 29 at 1:00 pm
All tickets $10

The Samuel Project is about a teenager (Ryan Ochoa) who gets to know his grandfather Samuel (Hal Linden) for the first time when he makes him the subject of a senior year animated art project. With dreams of becoming a professional artist, the teen discovers that his grandpa, a Jewish dry cleaner, was heroically saved from Nazi capture in Germany by a young woman when he was a boy. After hesitating, Samuel agrees to tell his story for the project—a story he hasn’t told in over 75 years. In the end Eli’s project makes the finals in a countywide art showcase where he unveils his animated ‘Samuel Project’ with the help of his unlikely friend Kasim, an electric guitar wielding school misfit. And after decades, three generations of Eli’s family finally connect with one another.

Tickets may be purchased in advance at the Fine Arts Theatre Box Office, or online at AshevilleJewishFilmFestival.com.

Atlanta Actors! A special audition technique intensive w/ Erica!
Mar 28 @ 7:00 pm – 10:00 pm

Calling all ATLANTA ACTORS!
In this one-night event, Casting Director Erica S. Bream will take actors through three unique audition experiences:

Self-taping
Live callbacks
Cold reads

Erica will guide actors through these exercises, pointing out the different techniques necessary for each while providing feedback, tips and hints along the way.

All in-class work will be recorded and available for actors to re-watch for an extra learning opportunity.

Hone your technique in this special one-night event!
————————————-

FAQs

How is this class different than any other audition technique class?

Erica wants actors to understand the fundamental differences between these different types of auditions. The best way to discern this is to practice them back-to-back, breaking down the process as you go. Erica has seen hundreds of thousands of auditions over the course of her career and is passionate about demystifying this process for actors.

Are there ID or minimum age requirements to enter the event?

All actors aged 10 and up are welcome!

Do I need to pick my own sides?

Erica will provide all material for class and an industry-standard amount of time to prepare it. You just need to show up, ready to work!

What’s the refund policy?

Full refunds will be honored up until two weeks before class (Mar. 14th is the cut-off.)

Is my registration fee or ticket transferable?

Sure! Just make sure Erica knows who the new attendee is at least a week before class so she can assign appropriate material.

Pub Theology
Mar 28 @ 7:00 pm – 10:00 pm
Homeplace Beer Company

People have been gathering in pubs and public spaces for ages, talking about life, philosophy, faith, and deep questions of meaning. Increasingly, people all over are rediscovering the pub as a safe, open space where they can explore and express their own doubts and questions, learn from others, and engage people of varying religious traditions. In our increasingly fractured society, these spaces are not only welcome, but needed.

The format is simple: beer, conversation, and God. Come bring your questions, your curiosity, and pull up a chair. Be ready to engage with people of varying religious traditions, philosophical perspectives and life experiences. You’ll be able to share your own wrestlings and thoughts while learning something new along the way, and hey— there’s likely to be a good craft beer you haven’t tried yet!

Our pal Steve Elderbrock from First Presbyterian will moderate, and we hope to have other leaders from local faith-based institutions host this monthly gathering as we move forward!

Hey guys, Jesse here. Normally I’m not on social media which y’all know but yes it’s really me. I went to the ENT the other day and I suffered a ruptured eardrum back in the from birth to burial days and the injury never healed properly. They’re telling me I need a month off or it can result in permanent loss and/or a surgery which will put me down for nine weeks minimum. So, sadly to say we have to push back the division shows at the end of December. None are being canceled, just postponed & the new dates are below. If you have to get a refund due to the new date, they’re available at the point to purchase. Sorry for the inconvenience but I can’t really jeopardize my health or we don’t have 10 Years. See everyone shortly.

Thanks,

AP

SEATING: Seated Show

Parker Millsap

At 25 years of age, Oklahoma native Parker Millsap is quickly making a name for himself with his captivating live performances, soulful sound, and character-driven narratives. He’s had a string of highlights in recent years including his network television debut on CONAN, a performance with Elton John at the Apple Music Festival in London, an Austin City Limits taping and an Americana Music Association nomination for Album of the Year. He has also received praise from The New York Times, The Boston Globe, LA Times, Austin Chronicle and Rolling Stone to name a few.

He first picked up an acoustic guitar at nine, then plugged in and went electric after getting into Eric Clapton and Stevie Ray Vaughan, eventually starting a cover band with classmate, Michael Rose who still plays bass with him today. Over the years he recruited musicians Daniel Foulks (fiddle) and Andrew Bones (Drums) to join his band.

Parker’s first three full-length releases – 2012’s Palisade, 2014’s self-titled LP, and 2016’s The Very Last Day – showcased a primal mastery of acoustic folk rock, with their flourish for revelation and fiery dynamics, all recorded with extreme precision, purpose and efficiency.

Parker’s newest album, Other Arrangements, (released 5/4/18 via Thirty Tigers) finds him taking bold steps in new directions. Associated press says “Parker Millsap rocks harder than ever on his fourth album.” And Rolling Stone calls Other Arrangements Parker’s “tightest, sharpest and most infectious set of songs to date.”

“I wasn’t prepared for the wild, vast power of his voice and his remarkable charisma. This guy can yodel, he can sing a soul song for real, he can preach and he wiggles his leg like Elvis. A star in the making.”
– ANN POWERS, NPR

“Notably smart, sometimes acerbic, this charismatic new performer… rivets audiences with intense but smooth vocal whoops, cascades and pauses; emotional, blues-based slide guitar with punctuating harmonica; and a sharp, compact band. If he’s doing all this at 21, what will he sound like at 30?”
-WALLSTREET JOURNAL

“His voice has the depth of some of the best blues musicians with a gravelly range that forces you to pay attention, if not to just wonder how the slender, fresh-faced Millsap is doing what you’re watching. He’s got the boyish charms and the wild and dirty sound that comes from a life of hard living. It’s absolutely astounding.”
-TULSA WORLD

“Last night in Atlanta I saw one of the best concerts I have ever seen…It restored my faith in music.”
-SIR ELTON JOHN

“1996. That was the year we bought the 8 track. A Tascam 48 half inch tape reel to reel with two dbx noise reducers and a fat grey remote made of thick plastic and metal. That’s how I learned to record with Brian Weitz. The machine, he, and I, taking smoke breaks outside of my bedroom. Tape heads soaked in drying alcohol. It all becomes one memory; recording, hanging out, driving around. The machine speaks a language and we observed and learned to speak it pretty well. There were many lawns to speak about. We’d have long conversations about the stretches of grass and daffodils. Other machines in the future watching every move. Back then there were large clusters of woods cut in sectors by black roads. There were two ways to leave the driveway. A person could stand at one of the entrances and call out to the other. She sees and beckons and the other runs in the snow along a neat row of trees to the other side. There are many entrances to music, this is just one.

Speakers of a car spit flurries of warm road dust. The scene is a half melted snowy canyon. Fences of large farms stacked in sevens are spaced seven lengths apart. Seven shadows laid across cold rock and grass. Someone is asleep in the back seat. Sun lighting them up. Black lines of fences on bright clay based vistas. We stopped every now and then gazing at impressive canyon crevice drop off. Eyes seeing reds and sun-dyed pinks and orange in clouds above other canyon pinnacles. Snow patches in the hills till you can’t see with eyes. The car moves forward farther than the eyes can see. Life is being left even faster. There are cows everywhere, like Lancaster. Cows way out in the distance far from the road. Patches of black and white blur on white carpet, coloring or blotting dreams formed under mossy roofs and spinning out chimneys across the earth. There are cows closer to the roads and in the cold streams. Brown crowds under the trees walking slow in the scene. We follow or leave them behind. America blinks and cows appear. They stand stunned. Disappearing little black eyes in the mirror. Brown coats and horns. It’s an intimate scene in the car. You’re behind the wheel. The Driver and the Navigator and the Music. The music moves out in the way it did years ago. Like when we sat on porches and at fires and on hilltops and climbed the pyramids. Way before I was born. A singular voice singing out at something way out there. Could have been the stars, could have been other people. Unnameable things. A voice made of many. The music is speaking about the movement of things and about you moving with them. The Driver bobs their head. The Navigator leans in to get deeper into the sounds of things. The sounds of spaces.

Buddy Holly and Waylon Jennings are telling a story of a dusty time on the road while waiting for the studio engineer in the mechanical room to say ‘go’. Buddy had been dead for years but it feels like it’s 1951, and a tape machine is about to snap forward into motion like a car underneath the rock church dripping clay caps (much slower than you can think). It’s capsizing us into a jangle of light guitar strum and hum of sweet tunings. Echoes on vocals sing of a room filled with music. A robot army looms on the other side of the mountains, well out of range of Buddy and Waylon’s farmhouse holler. Screaming at the wheel and crank. The voices mingle with the elements. The robots bounce off the neon blue vapor of the song’s vibrations. Blue ice surfers riding on perpetual ice foam. A frozen mist appears outside and all the lights have a blurry glow in the haze. A car playing the Harden Trio drives by. The Driver wonders if it’s all a hallucination.

In here you’ll find only the dreams that the music once sang of. It sings back through time and sings forward at us. To ease us in the crowded spaces. I’m on a stage singing out to a crowd of sweating faces. I don’t want to forget the pure spaces. Endless spaces. You leave them as soon as you enter. Drifting along in a space of beings. Bouncing on other lively things. The feelings. The things that never leave us. A full shiny pot empties spilling water into a snow shaped well. Water had to find its way into the ground again. To be walked on by horses. To be dug up by someone working for a family in the insurance business. To find a home. To have the means to do so. To leave it or see it fall. To remember a time when going home wasn’t as easy as pressing the video button on your phone. And there wasn’t a particular direction to leave home for, just distance untraveled.

On the T.V. there’s a tan spaghetti western film that glows in the corner of a den where previously we saw dreams rise and leave through wood-scented hearths. Morricone soundtrack blaring, but getting softer and softer as the old white car pulls out the long driveway to the canyon road. “Well how long do you think you’ll be gone?” “As far as it takes.” At work on Monday, the Robot Boss greets him bluntly: “You’re late for my cleaning.” Misses Saturdays. Misses the dirt. Misses the mud, the blue pink sunshine drop behind the canyon towers. Robot war blaring in the distance. Missed that drive. You should have been awake, robots don’t sleep. Presses Record.”

COWS ON HOURGLASS POND was recorded from January-March 2018 by Dave Portner at Laughing Gas to Tascam 48 half inch reel to reel tape machine. It was mixed by Adam McDaniel at drop of sun with Dave Portner mixing effects and moving some faders.

MARCH 29
In the Midst: Environmental Imagery from the Asheville Art Museum
Hilary Schroeder, Curatorial Assistant
Meet at The Collider (1 Haywood Street, Asheville 28801)

In the Midst: Environmental Imagery from the Asheville Art Museum illustrates the inherent grandeur and beauty of nature as well as the human impact on the environment. The primarily black-and-white photographs’ stark contrasts throw subtle details into high relief. Some images capture harsh realities, such as the scars made by roads carved into ancient mountains, overflowing rivers where industrialization has taken hold, or snow blanketing the graveyard of an abandoned manufacturing plant. Others offer a quieter look at coexistence: pecan orchards, a picturesque mill, buildings nestled in their environs, ethereal trees reminding us of nature’s enigmatic spirit. As human-made and natural phenomena become increasingly intertwined, we are reminded of the parallel shifts, interruptions, and journeys that mark the course of the fate of both.

First exhibited as part of Photoplusavl (November 7-11, 2018), this installation of In the Midst is part of Climate City Expo (CCx), hosted by The Collider. CCx offers professional and experiential tracks for individuals to explore innovation at the forefront of climate adaptation and resilience. The CCx: Arts track, which includes this exhibition, allows the community to see how artists are using craft, film, photography, and fine art to bring attention to our changing climate and environment. Offered to licensed massage therapists, discounts given to ASMY graduates.

Want to have fun while getting your CEUs? Spend three days with Pete Whitridge exploring deep tissue structures of the upper body that are at the root of most client pain.

• Refine your touching skills and gain new confidence
• Deepen your knowledge of anatomy and fascial structures
• Teach your clients to work with you during therapy
• Eliminate chronic pain by working below the client’s pain threshold
• Slow down, focus your attention, be more effective with less effort

This workshop explores the Responsibility Center, focusing on the scapulae, shoulder girdle, brachial plexus, cervical ligaments and mandible. This is a multi-disciplinary approach to chronic pain. We will use orthopedic assessments, passive and active fascial stretching, muscle energy techniques, hydrotherapies, and cross fiber friction to help identify and eliminate pain and dysfunction. You will have the opportunity to dialogue about your own specific client needs and learn self-care strategies to help clients maintain pain free movement. We will review current findings from the Fascia Research Congress while exploring the unique nature of the connective tissues!

This class is designed to help you pinpoint problem areas quickly, devise strategies to eliminate pain, and work collaboratively with your client. You will receive lots of bodywork, learn new ways to handle clients with chronic pain, and reconnect with fellow massage therapists. You will leave this class with new skills and confidence in helping your clients be pain free!
