A Fundraiser for Amazon Conservation Team and Survival International featuring music by

Black Sea Beat Society
Tashi Dorji
House and Land
Mountain Bitters
Lunar Creature

At least 11,200 years ago, humans began living in the Amazon. This heritage, which includes over 400 different tribes, is under new attack from Brazil’s recently elected president, Jair Bolsonaro. Within hours of taking office, he issued executive orders that target indigenous people, the LGBT community and descendants of slaves. Illegal logging and mining pose mortal threats to indigenous people, through the spread of disease and mercury poisoning as well as social issues including prostitution and displacement. By slashing government funds that monitor and seek justice for illegal activity on indigenous land, comparing indigenous people living on protected lands to zoo animals and swearing to halt demarcation of indigenous land, deforestation rose 13.7% as he gained traction in the election, the highest increase in a decade . One in ten species in our world lives in the Amazon rainforest and 60% of the Amazon is in Brazil, giving this ancient forest unparalleled biodiversity. Rainforests are non-renewable resources. When logged and mined, erosion washes away necessary minerals for regrowth. The new threats unleashed by Bolsonaro is of concern to us all. These are some of the reasons we are raising money for Amazon Conservation Team and Survival International. Leading to millions of acres or protected forest, both of these organizations partner with indigenous people to protect their ancestral lands and ways of life.

Consider the Source: Metatour 2019 w/ LITZ | AVL Music Hall
Apr 11 @ 9:00 pm – Apr 12 @ 2:00 am
Asheville Music Hall

Genre: Progressive Sci-Fi Middle Eastern Fusion
Tickets: adv. $10 / dos. $12
Show: 9PM (Doors: 8PM)
Ages: 21+

Consider the Source w/ LITZ

NYC trio Consider the Source defy easy description. If intergalactic beings of pure energy, after initiation into an order of whirling dervishes, built some kind of pan-dimensional booty-shaking engine, powered by psychedelics and abstract math, it’d probably just sound like a CTS tribute band. Drawing from progressive rock, fusion and jazz, with alien sounds soaked in Indian and Middle Eastern styles, CTS blends disparate parts into a striking, utterly original whole. Dubbed “Sci-Fi Middle Eastern Fusion”, the band’s music strikes a rare balance between cerebral and emotional, intellectual and primal. A relentless touring schedule has won the band a fervent following from California to Israel, with fans ranging from jam-band hippies and jazz cats to corpse-painted headbangers and prog geeks.
Formed in 2004, Consider the Source features Gabriel Marin on fretless double-neck guitar, bassist John Ferrara, and drummer/percussionist Jeff Mann. Called “the guiding light for his generation of six-stringers”, Marin channels the mystical fury of McLaughlin and Coltrane into wailing melodies, kaleidoscopic soundscapes and boneshaking riffs. With a background in classical musics both Eurpoean and Indian, and an instinct for avant-jazz and destructive metal, Marin’s hypnotic fusion of styles is ever unpredictable. Ferrara’s propulsive, percussive attack, equally suited to simple grooves and impossible chords, can ground the music or launch it into space. His madcap gumbo of slap bass, Indian rhythms, earthy minimalism and complex tapping constantly pushes into strange new worlds, whilst still dropping thick booty-clap beats. Underneath them lies Mann’s rolling thunder; dense rhythmic architecture built from pure swagger and bounce. Half double-bass prog-metal, half crackle-pop Buddy Rich swing, with African and Balkan swirls, Mann’s muscular, freewheeling polyrhythms are the engine fuel for Consider’s multiversal mischief. Even when not improvising, Consider’s music is always a conversation, a roiling stew of dynamic interplay. Each member of Consider the Source alternately leads and follows, spars and assists; in any single song, alliances are made and broken, bargains struck and divorces finalized.
Touring from coast to coast, as well as Europe and the Middle East, has not only earned the band thousands of fans, but has allowed them to perform with a wide variety of well-known artists, including Victor Wooten, Wayne Krantz, King Crimson Projekt, Kris Myers (Umphrey’s McGee), Wyclef Jean, Andy Statman, Matt Darriau (Paradox Trio), Oteil Burbridge, Jacob Fred Jazz Odyssey, Dumpstaphunk, Keller Williams, George Porter, Jr., Jeff Sipe, Panzerballet (Germany), Eatliz (Israel), Freak Kitchen (Sweden), Morglbl (France), and many others. They have performed at numerous festivals and events, including Burning Man, Gathering of the Vibes, the NYC Fretless Guitar Festival, Catskill Chill, Sun Seekers Ball (Canada), Aura Music & Arts Festival (Florida), Jazz Fest (New Orleans), Head For The Hills Festival & SXSW (Texas), Rootwire (Ohio), and the NYC Gypsy Festival. The band’s latest release, “World War Trio (Part 1)” (2014) is available at considerthesourcemusic.bandcamp.com.

The Learn Play Thrive Approach to Autism (Durham)
Apr 12 @ 8:30 am – 5:00 pm

DURHAM LIVE AUTISM TRAINING FOR OTs & OTHER PROFESSIONALS:

This live continuing education training is for occupational therapists and other professionals working with kids with autism on practical, everyday skills.

https://www.learnplaythrive.com/autism-training-durham

In The Learn Play Thrive Approach to Autism, you’ll learn:

BEHAVIOR PROBLEM SOLVING. Never again write generic behavioral interventions that just don’t work. You’ll learn a behavior problem solving process based on an in-depth understanding of autism learning styles that will allow you to feel more confident and successful in generating relevant and specific behavioral interventions for your clients.

THERAPY PROCESS. Get past feeling “stuck” and not knowing where to start with helping your clients meet their goals. Learn how to use informal assessment, individualized structure, visual instructions, and evidence-based autism teaching strategies to guide your therapy process from assessment through goal mastery and generalization.

MAKING SCHEDULES. Stop wasting your limited time making schedules that your clients don’t understand or use. You’ll learn howto create truly individualized schedules that will reduce transition battles and increase flexibility.

VISUAL TO-DO LISTS + SELF-CARE SKILLS. Move beyond giving constant redirections and reminders that leave you feeling ineffective and make your clients frustrated and confused. You’ll learn a method for creating visual to-do-lists that even your most concrete (or youngest) clients will understand. These visual to-do lists will keep your kids at the table for learning, increase independence in self-care skills, and provide new opportunities for social engagement and play.

PLAY & LEISURE. You know play and leisure are so important, but you often feel feel stuck knowing where to start or how to really teach your clients to play. Learn a fun, effective process for assessing and teaching play and leisure skills that blends structure with naturalistic strategies.

COMMUNITY INTEGRATION. Get past your fears of moving your intervention to the community, where real life happens! Learn exactly how to bring it all together and help your clients succeed out in the community.

You’ll learn how to confidently help your clients with ASD meet their goals without ever using rewards or consequences in your practice. It’s all about understanding how people with autism think and learn and shaping our interventions in a way that will be meaningful.

This course is actionable and concrete. You’ll develop intervention plans you can apply in your practice right away.

https://www.learnplaythrive.com/autism-training-durham

TESTIMONIALS:

“This is by far the best course and professional development I have done to enhance my OT practice! Meg has taken a huge amount of research, knowledge and experience and condensed it into a course that is accessible, practical and just makes sense. I highly recommend this course to any OT working with young people with autism. You will not only walk away with explicit strategies and interventions but also a much deeper and useful understanding of autism learning styles and how this informs our practice. ” – Christine Bagnall, OT (Australia)

“If you’re looking for effective, real life strategies for working with children on the autism spectrum, you need to take this course. Meg uses her extensive experience to teach you not only what to do, but actually how to do it! Her presentation is engaging, easy to follow, and you’ll walk away with the confidence that you can put these strategies into action right away.” – The Anonymous OT Blog

“I am not unfamiliar to the world of autism. I grew up with a brother with severe autism, and have been immersed in the world of autism ever since I was born… I have a love and intense passion for this population and have always felt confused and torn about what best practice was with this population. With so many drastically different treatment models and resources out there for this population, I struggled to feel successful always in providing effective and consistent treatment with this population. I always felt like something didn’t quite “fit” with some of the approaches I was seeing being utilized in different clinics. These methods clicked for me. When I started going through the modules, her style is so concise and practical- I could take that education and apply it to my practice IMMEDIATLEY. And as I hoped, I got to see immediate changes in my patients as well! I cannot express enough how fervently I feel about practitioners starting this course and their ability to feel confident in working with individuals with autism!” – Stephanie Kovacs, OTR/L (Illinois)

” I recommend this course to any OT or teacher who is working with children diagnosed with Autism and struggling to understand social skills and routines. Meg provides many simple techniques to integrate strategies that can have an immediate impact on the effectiveness of both therapy sessions and classroom instruction.”
– Jayson Davies, OTR/L OT School House Podcast

ABOUT MEG PROCTOR, OTR/L

I started my career as an OT in early intervention with huge expectations, a serious case of perfectionism, and not enough training to really help the kids I was seeing. Have you been there? It did not feel good.

Years later, after working my way through different settings and receiving a faculty appointment for UNC Chapel Hill’s TEACCH Autism program, I underwent months and months of extensive training in autism interventions and trained teachers, psychologists, and the occasional therapist from around the world in effective autism interventions for functional life skills. I looked back on those years of practice and cataloged the things I wished so badly I had known before. At every training I wondered, “Where on earth are the OTs? WE need this training!”

As the founder of Learn Play Thrive, I’ve continued to hone my clinical skills and find new ways to teach the therapists who want to do better work with their clients with autism. The Learn Play Thrive Approach to Autism is what I wished I had known all those year ago in early intervention, in school-based practice, and in the clinic. It is a synthesis of what I’ve learned from working with hundreds of kids with autism, mentoring OT students, coaching practicing therapists, and spending years studying autism learning styles.

I feel confident that it will change your practice.

Emma G – The Superhero Tour
Apr 12 @ 5:00 pm – 8:00 pm
Crow & Quill

Crow and Quill is proud to feature international singer/songwriter Emma G with accompaniment from accomplished percussionist Joey J Drums during their East Coast SUPERHERO tour! More info at: http://emmagmusic.com Watch SUPERHERO here: https://bit.ly/2LEhHTb The show is a $5 entry at the door. ABOUT EMMA G: Finding her voice as she rediscovers her American heritage from her home base in Washington DC, New Zealand-born singer/songwriter Emma G is a combination of Adele, Pink, Tracy Chapman and Alanis Morrissette. Her edgy tones and gutsy lyrics hammer home her messages of love, vulnerability, empowerment and strength with a soul-pop/rock sound that is engaging, inspiring and appealing to a hugely diverse audience. Unapologetically outspoken, flying her freak flag, and always smiling, Washingtonian Magazine dubbed Emma G as one of the “Best of DC”. One Love Massive describes her as “charismatic”, and ANR Factory describes her voice as “poignant and beautiful” with “astounding bravery to speak up” on issues that matter to her. And where did this bravery come from? A long history of health issues, brain surgeries, battles with depression and suicide, drug addiction, and sexual assault, yet still finding the inner strength to come out the other side positively: singing her truth. “Things that happen to us don’t make us who we are, but we all need to overcome struggles. The trick is to overcome them together.” Says Emma G. “My hope is that my music will not only resonate with individual people, but also ignite those flames of love, resilience and community”.

Maintaining a commitment to multicultural programming, the 11th Asheville Wordfest invites audiences and participants to venture deeply into spaces of tension and complexity in search of possibility with readings and workshops featuring poets, authors, artists, storytellers, and community facilitators.

Asheville’s Literary Festival, Asheville Wordfest, welcomes North Carolina Poet Laureate, Jaki Shelton Green. Wordfest is delighted to host North Carolina’s Poet Laureate, particularly Jaki whose devotion to teaching and building the SisSTAR-hood runs as deep as the rivers rushing inside our mountains.

Our aim is to Heal the Soul of Appalachia with words this year, and even to Heal the Soul of the World. Sharon Oxendine, a Beloved Elder of the Lumbee Tribe and Wisdom Keeper, will lead a talk as a First Nations Woman. Byron Ballard, author and Village Witch, will lead a workshop and share lore of the land. Cara Hagan returns to Wordfest as both curator and presenter; she will be presenting a program at ReVolve on December 5 (details will be on the website) that will find its continuation in Wordfest. Cara will also engage our special guests, The Gaza Poetry Society, via Zoom. Marlisa Mills of Blue Lotus will guide us into the bravery of grief; Lisa Soledad Almaraz will guide us in a workshop; and John Evans will lead us through a transformative writing workshop. All of this plus poetry workshops and lessons in other genres facilitated by Flat Iron Writers Room–and readings and song by Michael Hettich, Afrofuturist Darrell Stover, and more.
Once again, Asheville Wordfest presents a place of poiesis – creativity and meaning.
