Sisters In Words: Fiction, Nonfiction & the Creative Process
Jan 24 @ 6:30 pm – 9:00 pm
Lenoir-Rhyne University Asheville

Lenoir-Rhyne University in Asheville’s Thomas Wolfe Center for Narrative and the Yale Association of Western North Carolina will present “Sisters in Words: Fiction, Nonfiction, and the Creative Process.” Best-selling authors and sisters, Elizabeth Kostova and Victoria Johnson, will read from their latest works, Kostova’s “The Shadow Land” and Johnson’s “American Eden: David Hosack, Botany, and Medicine in the Garden of the Early Republic.” A discussion on the creative process will follow, facilitated by Laura Hope-Gill, coordinator of the Thomas Wolfe Center for Narrative, as well as a question-and-answer session with the audience and a book signing and sale. The event will take place on Thursday, Jan. 24, at Lenoir-Rhyne’s 36 Montford Ave. location in Asheville. Doors will open at 6pm, readings will begin at 6:30, and the event is free and open to the public. Refreshments will be served.

“The Shadow Land,” authored by Asheville-based Kostova, chronicles the travels of a young American woman to Bulgaria. The narrative unravels into a sumptuous tale from an incident of an accidentally taken piece of luggage. Kostova’s novel takes the reader through the terrains of grief and mystery while celebrating at every turn the power of story to awaken, fascinate, and heal. Her 2005 work, “The Historian,” was the first debut novel to reach number one on The New York Times bestseller list.

Johnson’s “American Eden: David Hosack, Botany, and Medicine in the Garden of the Early Republic,” a finalist for the 2018 National Book Award, illustrates a noted 18th and 19th-century physician’s dream of creating the nation’s first botanical garden. Physician to Alexander Hamilton and Aaron Burr (and present at the fateful 1804 duel between the two), Hosack drew in his medical practice on his vast knowledge of medicinal plants. His work earned him the admiration of Thomas Jefferson and James Madison, among other luminaries. Johnson is an associate professor of urban policy and planning at Hunter College in New York, N.Y.

“This event deeply reflects the passion of the Thomas Wolfe Center for Narrative, which focuses on development and process in creative work,” said Hope-Gill, Lenoir-Rhyne professor and coordinator of the university’s Master of Arts in Writing program. “Kostova and Johnson meticulously merge inquiry, creativity, and intellectual curiosity,” she said. “The results are two thrilling and very different works of history and literature, and this event promises to be deeply insightful and exciting for all of us who strive to follow our creative impulses to their most excellent ends.”

Allison de Groot and Tatiana Hargreaves, two women on the forefront of American traditional music, join forces in this powerful new duo. With banjo, fiddle, and voice, Allison (Molsky’s Mountain Drifters) and Tatiana (Laurie Lewis) seek out unusual repertoire that catches their ear and inspires them to explore the boundaries of the tune. Their debut album showcases a strong new voice that is both reflective and dynamic. In the blink of an eye, Bertie is masquerading as a romance novelist, Crumpet’s posing as his own long-lost twin, and a sinister foreign count is challenging Bertie to a duel. It Didn’t Happen: An Erotic Odyssey
Jan 24 @ 9:00 pm – Jan 26 @ 9:00 pm
The Magnetic Theatre

Judy thought of herself as straight; marriages, kids. She’s compelled to take us on a journey through erotically-charged relationships with women throughout her life. From teens through her 40s, Judy is both narrator and performer embodying herself at every age in relationship with six catalytic women. Power, shame, ecstasy and internalized misogyny are the landscape for this darkly comedic piece that explores the erotic world of fluctuating desire and loyalties.

Listen Up Nancy (All Female Variety Band)
Jan 24 @ 9:00 pm – Jan 25 @ 12:00 am
One World Brewing

January 24th, 2019 at 9 PM

Listen Up Nancy Band

Live at One World Brewing: // 10 Patton Ave, Asheville NC

Brand new all-female variety band, Listen Up Nancy, formed in October 2018 for a special one-off performance for the renowned WomanSong Asheville annual concert. From there, bookings have been offered to reprise the line-up from time to time, for more of the same! The individual projects that this quartet produces are as diverse as the ladies themselves.

Keyboard player and soul singer, Rachel Waterhouse (Sister Ivy, Special Affair) has been lauded one of our area’s finest neo-soul singer/songwriters. With influences that range from Esperanza Spaulding, Herbie Hancock, Nina Simone and Regina Spektor, she can take you far away in your mind of imagery, or plant you smack dab in front of her, bobbin’ your head to the stylistically pleasing rhythms she and her
bands evoke.

Aileen Pearlman (Aka, Big Al) has been playing music her whole life. She found music while living in an orphanage from age twelve. Even after high school graduation, she continued to tweak her guitar and songwriting skills and began playing folk, rock and pop covers and originals locally, while earning an Associate’s degree. A welcome balance to her rigorous studies as a respiratory therapist, she’s partnered with Linda Mitchell and Peggy Ratusz as well as solo gigging, on and off for over 25 years.

Drummer, Percussionist, Nancy Asch has had a full and interesting life and music has always been a huge part of it. Her main project is a four piece all-female Jazz band called Honey where she is the featured lead and rhythm guitarist. Alumni and drummer for the all-girl ensemble called The Revamps, she and fellow Listen Up members, Big Al Pearlman and Peggy Ratusz hosted a Female Artist Spotlight night for 2 years at a local venue.

Chanteuse, Peggy Ratusz has been voted Best in Blues, either placing or winning in the category for going on 11 years. Her Daddy Longlegs Blues and dance band have been stage hopping locally and regionally for nearly 17 years. As part of Jonathan Pearlman’s Alien Music Club artists, she’s partnered with him to produce many themed shows including The Bridge (Paul Simon meets the Beatles) and Out of Blue (re-stylings of iconic Rock, Swing and Jazz tunes). With co-creator Paula Hanke, she has formed
an LLC:Women Who Made Music History Concerts where the duo tours, presenting the music of Linda Ronstadt and Etta James.

Space Jesus is the feeling you get when you travel through a wormhole in a fresh pair of Jordans. Jasha Tull was born in New Jersey and raised on hip hop. With his alarm set to NYC’s Hot 97 throughout elementary school, Jasha started making beats at a young age, and created Space Jesus as a vessel to express his personal experiences through music. With a focus on alien bass lines, gangster beats, and future feels, the Spaceman imprints his signature sound onto each genre he graces. After building a reputation for his dynamic live performances, and with appearances EDC, Electric Forest, Lollapalooza, Bonnaroo, and beyond under his belt, Space Jesus continues to explore the auditory universe in search of lower frequencies.
