The Cooperative Extension of Polk County is hosting our annual berry plant sale. This year, the Cooperative Extension director has chosen four varieties of blueberries, two varieties of raspberries, two varieties of strawberries, and one blackberry variety that have proven to specifically thrive in the North Carolina Foothills.
Orders will be accepted for plants now through February 22 and will be available for pickup in mid-March. Proceeds from this fundraiser go to support the activities, classes, and research that make the Cooperative Extension such a vital part of the Polk County community. For more information or to place an order, visit the Extension’s website at https://polk.ces.ncsu.edu or give us a call at 894-8218.

We are supporting Bounty & Soul’s work providing healthy food for our local community by providing them with metal silverware for their food sampling events. These wiill prevent the wastage and expense of disposable spoons and forks.
Bounty & Soul provide samples of delicious plant based foods and education for those members of the community who are receiving donated healthy food. Rather than use plastic spoons and forks for the demonstrations and sampling, Bounty & Sould are finding ways to be more green and sustainable, and we want to help.
We are aiming to collect 80 sets of metal or durable bamboo small spoons and forks through the month of February. Please bring washed used or new silverware to our store and enjoy our thanks and a browse and a cup of fair trade coffee.

Winter can be the most beautiful time of the year at Chimney Rock. Leafless trees make for expansive views of Lake Lure and the Hickory Nut Gorge. The sky is clear; you’re likely to find a quiet spot to sit and enjoy the peacefulness. You may even see a critter scamper by you in the forest. Capture that special moment or scene on your camera, enter it in our Winter Wonders Photo Contest and tell us about it. We’ll use the winning entries on our website and Facebook album, and you’ll win some fun prizes. Photos must be taken within the Chimney Rock section of the Park.
Cost: No additional cost to enter.

During the month of February, you’ll find the Sixth Annual Seconds Sale occupying the FW Gallery.
In the last several years, more and more of our local artists have participated in the Seconds Sale and it’s become a busy month as customers plan to be here to browse the sale.
The Seconds Sale is full of slightly imperfect and discontinued items from our local artists in varying mediums. Seconds are pieces of art which don’t quite live up to the artist’s standards, often only the artist is aware of the imperfection. There are always prints, paintings, photographs, pottery, glass, jewelry, mixed media and fiber works to browse. Also at the sale are items that artists are clearing out of their studios – there may not be any imperfection at all!
Come find a steal of a deal on handmade local art at Woolworth Walk’s Seconds Sale, February 1st – 27th.

Join us for another free legal name change clinic. We will supply you with all of the paperwork needed for the name change and help you answer any questions you may have while navigating this often confusing process. It’s easier with friends!
Our clinic is free, but there are different costs associated with the name change process that you will pay to different agencies along the way, and they are as follows:
Fingerprint fees: $10 each (you’ll need 2 sets)
State background check: $14
FBI background check: $18
Name change petition: $120
Notary fees: vary by location
There is also a charge for a new copy of your birth certificate, but that depends on what state you were born in. To find that info, check https://www.vitalchek.com.
Not all fees are due at the same time in the name change process. Fingerprints are the first step in the process which you then send off for the the state and FBI background checks. The federal background check can take up to 3 months to return, so you will have a little time to get the filing fee for the name change petition together.
If you feel like you would be more comfortable with an escort to the ID Bureau for fingerprinting or to the courthouse to file papers, please let us know in advance of the clinic date so that we can make the proper arrangements.

Growing and Eating Heirloom Tomatoes, with Sow True Seed
We all love tomatoes! Explore the growing and culture of heirloom tomatoes and the incredible diversity of varieties available to the home gardener – with a special emphasis on tomatoes in the southern Appalachians. This talk will be just in time for you to start your own heirloom seeds!
Chris Smith of Sow True Seed comes from a green thumbed British family but has lived in the Southeast since 2012. He is a garden writer for local and national publications and is working on a book titled In Defense of Okra, to be published by Chelsea Green. He is a student of permaculture, a seed saver (hoarder), and a homesteader committed to sustainable food systems.
Sow True Seed was founded in 2008 by lifelong gardener and food activist Carol Koury. The organization provides open-pollinated, heirloom, and organic vegetable, herb, and flower seeds to enthusiastic home gardeners and small market farmers. It was created in order to preserve our shared botanical heritage and grow a new era of sustainable culture and ecological wisdom. They support independent, regional agricultural initiatives that foster a vibrant, sustainable economy and true food sovereignty.
Around Here talks are free of charge and all are welcome. Complimentary coffee and cookies will be provided. The event will be held in the Ramsey Center, which is located inside Renfro Library on the campus of Mars Hill University.
For events that happen before 6pm on a weekday, please park in the lot on Bailey Street just next to the Greenway – across the street from Chambers Gym. After 6pm, visitors may park in any available green or white parking space, even if it is designated “faculty” or “students.”

An acclaimed surgeon specializing in weight loss delivers a paradigm-shifting examination of the diet and health industry’s focus on protein, explaining why it is detrimental to our health, and can prevent us from losing weight.
Whether you are seeing a doctor, nutritionist, or a trainer, all of them advise to eat more protein. Foods, drinks, and supplements are loaded with extra protein. Many people use protein for weight control, to gain or lose pounds, while others believe it gives them more energy and is essential for a longer, healthier life. Now, Dr. Garth Davis, an expert in weight loss asks, “Is all this protein making us healthier?”
The answer, he emphatically argues, is NO. Too much protein is actually making us sick, fat, and tired, according to Dr. Davis. If you are getting adequate calories in your diet, there is no such thing as protein deficiency. The healthiest countries in the world eat far less protein than we do and yet we have an entire nation on a protein binge getting sicker by the day.
As a surgeon treating obese patients, Dr. Davis was frustrated by the ever-increasing number of sick and overweight patients, but it wasn’t until his own health scare that he realized he could do something about it. Combining cutting-edge research, with his hands-on patient experience and his years dedicated to analyzing studies of the world’s longest-lived populations, this explosive, groundbreaking book reveals the truth about the dangers of protein and shares a proven approach to weight loss, health, and longevity.
Dr. Garth Davis is a leader in the field of bariatric medicine and the medical director of bariatric surgery at Memorial Hermann Memorial City Medical Center and the Davis Clinic for surgical and medical weight management. Dr. Davis is certified by the American Board of Surgery and is a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons and of the American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery. He lives in Houston with his family.
