On the Cusp: Youth Arts Empowerment Students
Art Exhibition at Pink Dog Creative

March 1–31, 2019
Opening reception Friday, March 1, 2019: 5–8pm

Youth Arts Empowerment (YAE) creative workshops provide young people with a safe place to develop self-empowerment through self-expression. Imagination, innovation and ingenuity is the welcomed thread that weaves its way through each workshop. Students, between the ages of eleven and nineteen, were provided art materials, shown various ways to use them and given creative assignments. The narrative paintings presented in this exhibit reveal the meaning, depth and importance of their creative process and power of art. The students’ exhibit, entitled, On the Cusp opens at the Pink Dog Creative Gallery, in the River Arts District on Friday, March 1, 2019 with an opening reception from 5 to 8pm. Youth Arts Empowerment is facilitated by its founder, Cleaster Cotton, artist, educator, and ALNUGE inventor. Cycle 1/Fall 2018 was the flagship six-session YAE Workshop Series, and was sponsored by Pink Dog Creative in partnership with the Arthur R. Edington Education & Career Center/Southside Arts and Agriculture Center. As one student commented, “I realized that I am an artist.”

Edwin McCain, Maia Sharp, and Jill Sobule [Songwriters Series]
Mar 1 @ 7:30 pm – 9:30 pm
Peace Center

Crooning voices, soulful guitars, and rollicking pianos bring heartfelt lyrics and magical melodies to life in the brand-new Peace Voices Songwriters Concert Series. Led by Greenville favorite Edwin McCain and accomplished songwriter Maia Sharp, each concert brings a new guest singer-songwriter to the Upstate for a one-of-kind performance. Join us this season in Genevieve’s theater lounge for this intimate listening room experience.

Jill Sobule
Hailed by The New York Times for making “grown-up music for an adolescent age,” Jill Sobule uses her warm wit and poet’s eye to poignantly look at life. She first caught mainstream attention with her 1995 song “I Kissed a Girl” — the first song about same-sex romance ever to crack the Billboard Top 20 (and no relation to the later Katy Perry tune). Her ‘90s alt-rock anthem “Supermodel” was featured in an iconic scene in the film Clueless. Since then, she’s always pushed forward, exploring new sounds and subject matter, including LGBTQ rights, teen mental health, and the unhealthy obsession with staying forever young.

Edwin McCain
Called the “great American romantic” by The New York Times, Edwin McCain has built an enviable career over the past 20 years. His enduring love songs and wedding must-haves “I’ll Be” and “I Could Not Ask For More” have become two of the biggest love songs in the history of pop music. 2018 marks the 20th year of the hugely popular “I’ll Be,” which topped the Billboard charts in 1998 and has proven to be a timeless classic over the past two decades. After recording his mega hits and experiencing the success that comes with a television show (Flipping Ships), McCain now performs upwards of 100 shows annually throughout the US.

Maia Sharp
Maia Sharp wears many hats. She has had her songs recorded by The Dixie Chicks, Bonnie Raitt, Trisha Yearwood, Keb’ Mo’, Cher, Edwin McCain, and Art Garfunkel. She produced McCain’s album Mercy Bound and, most recently, two songs for Garfunkel’s retrospective double album, The Singer. Sharp has six solo releases, and her latest duo project is Roscoe & Etta, with writing/production partner Anna Schulze. Each release has led to extensive touring throughout the US and UK, and appearances on Mountain Stage, Acoustic Cafe, World Cafe, NPR’s All Things Considered, CBS This Morning and NBC’s Today.

Footloose
Mar 1 @ 7:30 pm – 10:00 pm
Asheville Community Theatre

Music by Tom Snow; Lyrics by Dean Pitchford; Stage Adaptation by Dean Pitchford and Walter Bobbie

A musical version of the 1984 film! When teenager Ren McCormack moves from Chicago to a small town, he isn’t prepared for the stifling local laws, including a ban on dancing and rock music instituted by the local preacher. As he struggles to fit in, he encourages his classmates to defy the local pastor and call for a rock’n’roll prom. Fist pump!

“Footloose” combines songs from the hit 1984 soundtrack with dynamic new songs – and though it might seem like just a lot of fun, it also celebrates the wisdom of opening minds and listening to the voices of young people. Director Jerry Crouch, music director Lynda Ferrell Shuler, and choreographer Tina Pisano-Foor have put together an incredible cast of students and adults from our community to bring “Footloose” to life!
