When stories of large-scale change are told in our culture, they often center on larger-than-life characters taking dramatic action in moments of crisis, but a deeper study of history shows that it is movements that change the world — lots of people taking small actions in the same direction. Heroes never fix large-scale problems in the absence of a movement. That is good news for those of us who want to have a positive impact on the world around us. We don’t have to be heroes to make a difference. We just have to bring the gifts we are given.
