Exhibition Opening at Momentum Gallery: Small Works/Big Impact + Andy Farkas

Kick off your New Year with Momentum!  Momentum Gallery, located at 24 N. Lexington Avenue in downtown Asheville, opens two art exhibitions early on New Year’s Eve with a reception from 5-8 pm. Celebrate the opening of two new shows featuring original works by gallery artists and special guests.

Local printmaker Andy Farkas’ magical work occupies Momentum’s Feature Gallery. His wood engravings and moku hanga (Japanese watercolor woodcut) prints consistently delight young and old with their narrative depictions of personified animals combined with poignant original sayings in handset letterpress type. Come see a selection of Andy’s recent works including the newest print, “Where I Go.”

Small Works, Big Impact is a curated collection of paintings, original prints, and sculptural works in wood, ceramic, fabricated bronze, and cast concrete with hand-woven textile by gallery artists and special guests. Artists’ professional experience and visual expression is concentrated in new, intimately-scaled pieces by Michael Barringer, Samantha Bates, Mariella Bisson, Christian Burchard, Lisa Clague, David Ellsworth, Vicki Grant, Crystal Gregory, Amy Gross, Hoss Haley, Maltby Sykes, and Lawrence Tarpey.

Enjoy live music by Byrdie & The Mutts and light refreshments. This New Year’s Eve family friendly event is free and open to the public. Both exhibitions continue through February 24th, 2018.

Just say you’re attending the Oskar Blues NYE Hootenanny and they’ll extend the discount. The Oskar Blues trolley will be shuttling attendees to and from the brewery all night.

For our New Year’s Eve candle-light service, participants are invited to write on small strips of paper any unresolved issues, emotional wranglings, destructive habits, resentments, grudges, unhappiness that they want to release and purify. These strips will then be offered into a large singing-bowl (which will be sounded 108 times to accompany the 108 singing of the Vajrasattva mantra) and at the end of the evening, all these strips of paper will be consumed in a fire symbolizing a new beginning heralded by a new year.

Please note: This event has been a very popular in the past, and space will be quite limited. So, PLEASE arrive a little early if you can.

This event is FREE and open to everyone in the community regardless of race, gender identity, age, immigration status, sexual orientation, religion or ability, though donations are accepted with gratitude.

Born on the streets of Asheville, NC, Empire Strikes Brass has been exciting fans around the world with their unique and dynamic approach. Since their formation in 2013, ESB intentionally stretches the boundaries of the stereotypical brass band paradigm, fusing sounds from around the globe. Arrangement and the writing process is a collaborative band effort, taking multiple genres of music and weaving them together through the horn section. The diversity present is what makes ESB unique. There are definite nods to Old School Funk, Ska, Southern Rock, Alt Country, Hip Hop, Boogaloo and New Orleans Jazz. Expect face melting guitar solos, soul shaking synthesizer solos, lush vocal harmonies, powerful moving drums, thick nasty bass, hypnotically rhythmic keys and wall to wall horn power. Very few brass bands are able to fuse so many styles and array of technique into their work, but Empire Strikes Brass makes it happen again and again.

ESB is thrilled to announce the release of its debut album, Theme For A Celebration, which dropped Friday, February 3, 2017. The album “celebrates” the band’s love for brass instrumentation while drawing inspiration from different musical styles and influences. Throughout the band’s evolution, Empire Strikes Brass has developed its own unique sound that evolved from a traditional New Orleans Brass band to a ‘BrassFunkRock’ band with no limitations. They can share a world of high energy music in one setting that is packed full of flavor. In 2016 they played multiple festivals, had the pleasure of having Warren Haynes sit in with them at New Mountain Amphitheater in Asheville, celebrated the life of Dizzy Gillespie for the fourth year in a row in his hometown of Cheraw, SC, for the South Carolina Jazz and Heritage Festival, co-billed with Dr. John & Lettuce and even paraded hundreds of folks to a secret stage late night at the Big What? The Grass is Dead

What’s in a name? Sometimes, everything… Grass is Dead are a bluegrass combo paying homage to the music and cultural legacy of The Grateful Dead, arguably America’s first folk rock band and one of the most influential musical artists of the last 50 years. The catalogue of the Dead’s music is a gold mine for string bands and story tellers, and Grass Is Dead have established themselves far and wide as premiere purveyors of this rich tradition of Americana music. Pickin’ and grinnin’ is what they do best, and they have been adapting Grateful Dead songs in their own bluegrass style since 1998.

A festival favorite, Grass is Dead has built a loyal following from their home state of FL throughout the Eastern United States through burning live shows, and well beyond, through word of mouth, social media and old fashioned taper trees. The demand for Grateful Dead music is seemingly endless, and there are countless cover bands satisfying that demand on the local level, but there are not many artists out there approaching the music from the perspective of Grass is Dead. It is not complicated or artsy: this is a straight forward hootenanny built to last, and fans of either bluegrass music, The Grateful Dead, or both always leave happy, because sometimes there’s nothing left to do but smile, smile, smile…

Hailing from the misty mountains of Asheville, NC, Marley Carroll has been making waves as a thoughtful, sophisticated electronic producer with a penchant for melancholy melodies and warm, silvery vocals. Known as “the producer’s producer,” Carroll commands respect among his peers and a steadily-growing audience of fans. A classically trained pianist and percussionist, but never content to color inside the lines, he became the youngest ever to win the title of Best Scratch DJ for his home state of North Carolina – at 17. In the years since, he has never stopped evolving, undergoing a full transformation into a veteran producer, DJ, and dynamic live performer.

His self-produced 2007 debut album Melanaster was the result of meticulous bedroom alchemy, recalling a lost Radiohead LP submerged in ten feet of saltwater. The album’s sonic signature can be found somewhere between the beautiful haze of early ’90s shoegaze rock (My Bloody Valentine) and early 2000s IDM (Autechre, Squarepusher). Smeared, melancholy pop songs tethered to abstract electronic rhythms, or what NPR called “gorgeously subdued glitch-pop.”

In 2011, Carroll truly came into his own as a producer and live performer. He developed a solo PA set to bring a more raw and improvisatory vision of his music to live audiences, combining vocals, turntables, hardware controllers, and analog Moog synth. His onstage performances are exercises in understated talent that mix live vocals with stunning and unorthodox turntablist skills over a bed of sophisticated electronica. In 2012, he toured with forward-thinking producers like Shigeto, Dabrye, and Emancipator, and appeared at groundbreaking music festivals across the country (Moogfest, Decibel, Coachella). The galvanic dance floor energy of larger audiences infused his drum-driven 2012 EP R&S / Cedars, and its title track garnered a favorable feature from XLR8R. Steadily, national attention was building for Carroll’s unique style of subtle and compelling dance music.

In December 2013 he released Sings, a new full-length LP that combines the best of his recent instrumental work with his considerable skills as a songwriter. A densely propulsive electronic album rooted in forest imagery, Sings received universal critical acclaim, drawing praise from tastemakers like Pitchfork, Rolling Stone, Stereogum, Bandcamp and Impose Magazine. Sings was named NC’s Best Album Of 2013 by YES! Weekly.

Hundreds of brave (and crazy) people take the 10th annual New Year’s Polar Plunge at Lake Lure and freeze for a reason – to support local charities. Many more come to watch the fun, complete with bonfires to keep warm! The chilly dip takes place on New Year’s Day at 12 Noon. Registration is 9 until 11:30 AM. It’s a very festive time with fantastic costumes and a live DJ. All photos on this page were taken on January 1, 2016.

Events will all be outdoors at on the beach (2724 Memorial Highway, Lake Lure) and include new competitions. The Dash & Splash Fun Run begins at 10:30 AM ($10 registration fee includes a beanie cap). The Tug-a-Plunge at 11 AM includes teams of five firefighters and police officers.

ESOL tutors are invited to attend the ESOL Reunion, where participants will have an opportunity to share their experiences tutoring over the last few months, learn new activities to incorporate into sessions, and find out about other resources available.

Brewery 85 is celebrating the purchase and installation of several new tanks in their cellar with a concert series. The family-friendly music series will focus on small, intimate performances from local musicians as well as education of the craft brewing process. Music starts every Thursday night around 6pm and lasts until 8pm from November 30th until January 25th. Food trucks will begin serving around 530pm. During an intermission, an educational tour will be given by Brewery 85’s brewmaster – Will McCameron.

Just a reminder: This is a regular Pop-Up Biergarten Thursday night so please bring your Brewery 85 logo stein or buy one for discounted fills on beers at this and future Pop-Up Biergarten events. Still need a stein still? Purchase one for $15 at our facilities. These make GREAT lifetime gifts for folks who love our brewery!

Revealing musical and songwriting influences ranging from Randy Newman and JJ Cale to Beck, T Rex, and Tinariwen, Reed steps out from behind the gruff fuzz into a multi-faceted sound built on finely crafted songs and ear- & rear-moving grooves.

Featuring an all-star group of musicians including drummer/bassist Paul Taylor, saxophonist Art Edmaiston, Andrew Trube and Anthony Farrell (Greyhounds), and Adriano Viterbini, Speaking in Shadows is built on a foundation of Memphis groove and fat-back rhythm. Fresh textures abound, from the carnival of sounds on tongue-in-cheek “Drawn and Quartered” to the heartbreaking vocals of Heather Moulder on the spare, haunting lead track “Pass Me Over.” As a songwriter, Turchi confidently mines the classic blues/rock vein in “Offamymind” (“Well I can barely walk, so I guess I oughta/ Get behind this wheel and drive”), effortlessly shifts gears to the satirical “Everybody’s Waiting (for the end to come),” and turns introspective in “Looking Up Past Midnight.”

Reuniting with engineer Adam Hill (Big Star, Dirty Streets, White Stripes), Reed strikes out for new territory with co-production by Billy Bennett (MGMT, Drive-By Truckers, Los Colognes). The album was mastered by Andrija Tokic (Alabama Shakes, Natural Child, The Whigs) at Bombshelter Studios in East Nashville, with artwork and design from Charles Ritchie.

Comedian Ari Shaffir to Perform at The Grey Eagle Friday, January 5^th @ 7:00 PM & 9:30 PM

Ari Shaffir, host and co-creator of Comedy Central’s This is Not Happening is set to perform two shows in Asheville, NC on Friday, January 5^th.

Stand-up comedian, podcaster and actor ARI SHAFFIR describes his comedy as a puppet show–but way filthier and without the puppets. The New York native grew up Orthodox Jewish, spent 2 years in a yeshiva in Israel, and came back to America to lose his religion and become a comic. LA Weekly has called Shaffir “a gifted unyielding comic…a real force to be reckoned with.”

This July, Shaffir released two Netflix specials called Double Negative which is presented in two 45 minute episodes called Children and Adulthood. Self-described as his version of a “Smashing Pumpkins Double Album,” this type of double header release hasn’t been seen since George Carlin’s 1972 release of FM & AM. In Children Shaffir discusses the pressure he is getting from his family and friends to have kids, and why he is getting more and more thoughts in his head about why he doesn’t want to do that and in Adulthood, he discusses the freedoms of being child-free. Decider.com called Shaffir’s Netflix debut “positively audacious.”
