(Put on in conjunction with It’s Alive!: Frankenstein, 200 Years. An Artist Book + Print Exhibition On view through October 27 at Bookworks in West Asheville: www.ashevillebookworks.com)
About the film:
After a brutal crime leaves Grey Trace paralyzed and his wife dead, a genius inventor and wunderkind offers him a chance to get his life back with STEM, a state-of-the-art implant that not only helps him walk again, but also gives him superhuman strength that motivates him to start looking for his attackers. What happens when the line between humans and our technologies blur? Find out in this splashily gory science fiction-horror film with a good dose of B-movie fun, which takes cues from David Cronenberg, Black Mirror, 2001: A Space Odyssey, and, of course, Frankenstein. From the producer of Get Out and the writer of Saw and Insidious. (Yes, it’s violent. And also fun. Because Halloween.)
About Ali:
Ali McGhee received her PhD in Romantic literature from the University of Rochester in 2015, where she wrote about 19th-century disease theory, slave narratives, and Frankenstein. She taught classes on Romantic literature, science fiction, and horror at U of R, UNC Asheville, and Warren Wilson College. She currently works as a Multimedia Producer for AVLtoday and is an editor for Holler. She loves talking about weird horror and SF films to anyone who will listen.

MUSIC
The Gravy-House Storytellers presents mouth-watering musical marmalade from the 1920’s through the 1940’s. ‘The Gravyhouse Storytellers’ is a small-combo swing ensemble from Asheville, NC. The storytellers perform authentic arrangements of Pre-WWII-era Blues Shoutin’ and Swing tunes. Their repertoire favors ‘mid-tempo blues’ and is appropriate for Lindy, Balboa, and East/West coast alike.
BLUES
Band finished and you’re not done dancing? You’re in luck… stick around for our vintage blues hour! Continue dancing to DJ’d music until the bar kicks us out. $2 suggested donation for those coming just for the blues hour.
FOOD: Feeling peckish? The bar has a small selection of vegan goodies to help keep your stamina up! Ask a bartender for more details.
CLASSES
7pm: Continuing Class: Intermediate Partner Charleston w/ Sparrow & Jean
We will be working on side by side variations for the first two weeks, tandem entrances, exits, and variations for weeks 3 and 4, and for the 5th week of October we will be doing a special class on switching and stealing- super useful for jams and social dancing!
“Continuing” classes are for those dancers who have cemented the basics of the dance being featured that specific month. This includes knowing (and being able to execute cleanly and consistently) basic footwork and lead/follow skills for that dance. Some continuing classes may require no advance knowledge of a dance. This will be noted in the the class description.
*******************
8 pm: Core Class: Intro to 8-count Lindy Hop w/ Sparrow & Keith
Learn the foundations of the 8 count Lindy Hop, the high energy dance from Harlem that swept the nation and then the globe. Starting from the very beginning, breaking down the steps and rhythms in easy to understand ways, Keith and Sparrow will get ya on the dance floor and having fun in no time. No partner required and drop in friendly, though of course you’ll learn the most if you start at the beginning of the month and stay till the end!
“Core” lessons stress the fundamentals of swing dancing for beginning dancers. Lessons rotate monthly to focus on a different kind of swing dance (6 Count Lindy, 8 Count Lindy, Charleston, Balboa, etc.). Because good fundamentals are hard to develop in one month, we recommend repeating Core lessons (on the same topic) to help develop the solid foundation you’ll need in continuing classes. Core lessons are also great for intermediate and advanced dancers who want to “get back to basics” or learn a different dancing role (lead vs. follow).
*************************
GIFT CERTIFICATES
Do you want to buy a gift certificate for our classes as a gift, or to pre-pay for a block of classes for yourself? You can purchase gift certificates at the door at our weekly dance! They are $40 for a block of 4, and a great way to dive into the fun world of dance.

Have A Family Friendly Fright Night and Earn Money For Your School!
Wednesday October 24th – Sunday 28th 6:30pm-9pm
Gather your closest ghouls and raise money for your school! The Haunted Trail at Pisgah Brewery is back with festive family fun for it’s 6th year. The Haunted Trail is ideal for children ages 3-12 years old. The night includes a heart pumping walk through the Trail with live actors, spooky sounds, and spectacular props. After adrenaline reaches peak levels during the walk, guests spill out screaming and laughing into the Party at Pisgah Park. The party warmly welcomes trail-goers with Halloween crafts, contests, activities and local food trucks, as well as Pisgah beer on tap for the grown-ups! The younger ghouls can enjoy the (actor-free) “Sweet Peek Tour” of the Trail at 6:45pm before it gets dark.
Our Ghouls For Schools program puts the “fun” in fundraising, and is giving back to local schools for its 3rd year in a row. The program gives $1 back from each ticket to your PTA or PTO of choice. Ingles Markets will award an additional $1000 as a grand prize to the school that gets the most participants. In addition to the give back program, we will be hosting a silent auction at the festival to benefit the Eliada Academy. Great community sponsors like Ingles Markets, Mellow Mushroom, Best Bites Dental, The DM Shop and Asheville Plays help make the Ghouls For Schools program possible.
The Haunted Trail is produced by Asheville Plays!. Asheville Plays! was founded by a local husband and wife team who create lasting memories through the power of play.
