Jamie Laval’s Celtic Christmas captures the beauty and atmosphere of Scotland, Ireland, Brittany, and Iceland during the holidays. An entertaining and thought-provoking family holiday experience, the show weaves a tapestry of music, dance, poetry, and stories that hearken back to the ancient Celtic celebrations associated with the Winter Solstice and Christmas.
Headlining the show is North Carolina-based violinist and storyteller Jamie Laval who in 2002 won the U.S. National Scottish Fiddle Championship. He has performed for Her Majesty The Queen, appeared on the NBC Today show, and presented a TEDx Talk. Laval’s recent album Murmurs and Drones won the popular vote for “Best World Traditional Album” in the 2012 Independent Music Awards.
Joining Laval is a cast of young, critically praised performers of Celtic harp, woodwinds, guitar, Irish step dancing, and sublime vocals.

All Aboard THE POLAR EXPRESS! This memorable journey will take you on an incredible journey! Believe the magic this Holiday season!
Over 88,000 guests rode THE POLAR EXPRESS with the Great Smoky Mountains Railroad in 2017 and we hope to see you in 2018! The 1¼ hour round-trip excursion comes to life as the train departs the Bryson City depot for a journey through the quiet wilderness for a special visit at the North Pole. Set to the sounds of the motion picture soundtrack, guests on board will enjoy warm cocoa and a treat while listening and reading along with the magical story. Children’s faces show the magic of the season when the train arrives at the North Pole to find Santa Claus waiting. Santa will board THE POLAR EXPRESS, greeting each child and presenting them with a special gift as in the story, their own silver sleigh bell. Christmas carols will be sung as they return back to the Bryson City Depot.
THE POLAR EXPRESS begins November 9, 2018, and operates through December 31, 2018.

Join The Collider for inspiring evening, featuring an exciting adventure-travel documentary from award-winning producer & director Garrett Martin. “Unbounded: A Journey into Patagonia” follows a young, unaided crew of four as they hike and packraft for four months into the infinite region known as Patagonia.
The event will be held at The Collider in downtown Asheville on January 31, 2019, with proceeds benefiting our Thomas R. Karl Internship Program. Doors open at 6:30pm, and the film will begin at 7:00pm. The 70 minute film follows with a panel discussion with Martin, founder of video production company VentureLife Films, an Asheville-based independent film production and environmental media company. Other panel guests will be announced soon.
Tickets are $20 per person, $15 for active Friends of The Collider*, or free with the purchase of a one-year Friends of The Collider gift. Tickets for those with a valid student ID are $10. *Active Friends of The Collider must email [email protected] or call at 214-796-1494 for an exclusive discount code.
The crew’s journey in “Unbounded” is based along the Greater Patagonian Trail, a relatively unknown route that is now the longest continual trail in South America. The film focuses on discovering the indescribable factors of the regions, learning the history and culture of people living amongst the Andes Mountains, and bringing to light the incredible beauty of the area – all in an effort to help raise awareness of the need to preserve this untamed, but delicate, environment. Despite the crew’s lack of experience and support, they manage to document awe-inspiring landscapes and people of the region, interviewing top environmentalists across Chile, and trekking across 700 km of one of the roughest and most unforgiving regions in the world.
The Thomas R. Karl Internship Program was established in honor of Tom Karl upon his retirement as Director of NOAA’s National Centers for Environmental Information. This program provides semester-long internships for undergraduates seeking to enter this growing field. All proceeds of this event directly benefit this internship program and will fund more opportunities for students to work with the climate solution providers that are members of The Collider.
Mandolin Orange

Mandolin Orange’s music radiates a mysterious warmth —their songs feel like whispered secrets, one hand cupped to your ear. The North Carolina duo have built a steady and growing fanbase with this kind of intimacy, and on Tides of A Teardrop, due out February 1, it is more potent than ever. By all accounts, it is the duo’s fullest, richest, and most personal effort. You can hear the air between them—the taut space of shared understanding, as palpable as a magnetic field, that makes their music sound like two halves of an endlessly completing thought. Singer-songwriter Andrew Marlin and multi-instrumentalist Emily Frantz have honed this lamp glow intimacy for years.
On Tides of A Teardrop, Marlin wrote the songs, as he usually does, in a sort of stream of consciousness, allowing words and phrases to pour out of him as he hunted for the chords and melodies. Then, as he went back to sharpen what he found, he found something troubling and profound. Intimations of loss have always haunted the edges of their music, their lyrics hinting at impermanence and passing of time. But Tides of A Teardrop confronts a defining loss head-on: Marlin’s mother, who died of complications from surgery when he was 18.
These songs, as well as their sentiments, remain simple and quiet, like all of their music. But beneath the hushed surface, they are staggeringly straightforward. “I’ve been holding on to the grief for a long time. In some ways I associated the grief and the loss with remembering my mom. I feel like I’ve mourned long enough. I’m ready to bring forth some happier memories now, to just remember her as a living being.”
For this album, Marlin and Frantz enlisted their touring band, who they also worked with on their last album Blindfaller. Having recorded all previous albums live in the studio, they approached the recording process in a different way this time. “We went and did what most people do, which we’ve never done before—we just holed up somewhere and worked the tunes out together,” Frantz says. There is a telepathy and warmth in the interplay on Tides of A Teardrop that brings a new dynamic to the foreground—that holy silence between notes, the air that charges the album with such profound intimacy.
“This record is a little more cosmic, almost in a spiritual way—the space between the notes was there to suggest all those empty spaces the record touches on,” acknowledges Marlin. There are many powerful ways of acknowledging loss; sometimes the most powerful one is saying nothing at all.

“Drunken Angel” (Akira Kurosawa, Japan, 1948). Toshiro Mifune bursts onto the screen as a volatile, tubercular criminal who strikes up an unlikely relationship with Takashi Shimura’s jaded physician. Set in and around the muddy swamps and back alleys of postwar Tokyo, “Drunken Angel” is an evocative, moody snapshot of a treacherous time and place. Doors open at 7:30 / Film begins at 8:00 pm. Come on in, get comfortable, have some refreshments and enjoy great films from around the world every Friday! Open donation.
“Sawdust and Tinsel” (Ingmar Bergman, Sweden, 1953). Bergman presents the battle of the sexes as a ramshackle, grotesque carnival. The story of the charged relationship between a turn-of-the-century traveling circus owner (Ake Grönberg) and his performer girlfriend (Harriet Andersson), the film features dreamlike detours and twisted psychosexual power plays that presage the director’s Smiles of a Summer Night and The Seventh Seal, works that would soon change the landscape of art cinema forever. Doors open at 7:30 / Film begins at 8:00 pm. Come on in, get comfortable, have some refreshments and enjoy great films from around the world every Friday! Open donation.
