Rotarians Against Hunger
May 5 @ 2:36 am
The YMCA of Western North Carolina is partnering with nine Asheville-area Rotary Clubs and MANNA FoodBank for the ninth annual Rotarians Against Hunger meal packaging event in May.
The goal of the event is to package more than 300,000 fortified meals to be distributed throughout western North Carolina by MANNA and the YMCA’s Nutrition and Wellness Program. A portion of the funds raised for the event are earmarked for distributing seeds through Seed Programs International.
“We’re honored to partner with Rotarians Against Hunger to help feed thousands of families in our area,” said Cory Jackson, director of nutrition services at the YMCA of WNC. “The meal packaging event is a fun and rewarding experience where people come together to help feed our neighbors.”
More than 700 volunteers are needed May 4-5 for the meal packaging event at the Reuter Family YMCA for several shifts:
Friday May 4
Setup: 4-7 p.m.
Saturday, May 5
First packing shift: 8-10 a.m.

Second packing shift: 10:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m.
Third packing shift: 1-3 p.m.

AARP/YMCA Sock Hop
May 5 @ 6:00 pm – 8:30 pm
Asheville YMCA
ARP and the YMCA of Western North Carolina are cohosting a community Sock Hop to focus on adults living with cognitive limitations such as dementia.
The Sock Hop will be held on Saturday, May 5 from 6-8:30 p.m. at the Asheville YMCA, complete with crepe paper decorations from the old high school dance days. A DJ will spin the tunes from  the 40s, 50s, and 60s.
Open to all ages, the event will feature food and refreshments, including ice cream from the Hop Ice Cream Café. A photo booth will be available for participants to create mementoes of a fun-filled evening.
The Y and AARP believe that community engagement helps dispel the stigma associated with the diagnosis of dementia and the common belief that those diagnosed with dementia are no longer capable of advocating on their own behalf, said Diane Saccone, director of healthy aging initiatives at the YMCA of WNC.
The Sock Hop’s “health meets social” approach allows individuals living with a diagnosis of dementia to be connected and contribute to community while offering the opportunity to live fuller, more purpose-driven lives.
So grab your friends, dress up in your poodle skirts and saddle shoes and show us your best twist, swing, shag, or pony and enjoy the evening with us!
The event is free for YMCA members and $5 for nonmembers. Child care is available for children ages 6 months to 12 years for $5 per child.
Sign up at the front desk at any YMCA of WNC location. Learn more at ymcawnc.org.

School Safety Town Hall
May 9 all-day
WNC Ag Center - Virginia Boone Building
School Safety Town Hall @ WNC Ag Center - Virginia Boone Building

WLOS ABC 13 is hosting a “Your Voice, Your Future” School Safety Town Hall on Wednesday, May 9. The Town Hall will be held at the WNC Ag Center in Fletcher in the Virginia Boone Building from 8 p.m. – 9 p.m. Doors open at 7:00 p.m.

We have assembled panel to represent a variety of perspectives on this issue. The event is FREE and open to the public. Please RSVP to [email protected] if you can attend. You & your guests will be placed on the guest list.

WLOS School Safety Town Hall Panel:
Mr. Bo Caldwell – Superintendent of Henderson Co. Schools
Dr. Kimberly Elliott – Superintendent of Jackson Co. Schools
Capt. Bruce Simonds – Hendersonville Police Dept. – supervisor to SROs
Mr. Alan Justice – Safe Schools Director for Transylvania County Schools
Ms. Jessica Villatoro – High School Student, Buncombe County Schools – Organizer for local March for our Lives
The school shooting on Feb. 14 in Parkland, Fla. took 17 lives. Though the discussion over how to keep students safe in the classroom is not new, this most recent mass school shooting has sparked renewed and passionate debate over mental health, gun laws, and school procedures.

Here in Western North Carolina, several school districts have seen a rise in threats since Parkland. Many have held their own forums and town halls on school safety, and several students have been charged or suspended.

We hope this Town Hall gives the public the opportunity to ask questions of law enforcement and school leaders about their roles in school safety and facilitate a healthy discussion about all aspects of school safety in WNC.

Sunil’s Indian Supper
May 16 all-day
Well Played Board Game Cafe
Sunil's Indian Supper @ Well Played Board Game Cafe

Thali-Style Indian Supper

Sunil’s family has always expressed their love in sharing NW Indian food, and this has extended to him devoting his life to food by constantly learning traditional Gujarati cooking from his mother, and becoming a farmer. Although the cuisine is from across the ocean, Sunil’s farming background, and worldly travels makes for a thali spanning the range of the diverse array of Indian cuisines, and sometimes delving into further Eastern flavors and even Mexican. A local-seasonal menu cooked from scratch, with care for earth, nutrition, and heart-to-heart culinary delight, leads to a feeling of fusion but still a wholly Indian experience.

Thali, literally meaning “plate,” refers to the typical way a meal is eaten in an Indian household and many Indian restaurants. The full pallette of tastes and textures adorn the plate in small bowls and plates, allowing the eater to mix and match the many different components to make the perfect bite.

LOGISTICS: Arrive at 6pm, and you will be seated and served a starter and water. Feel free to stop at the bar and order a wine pairing or beer. Courses are not typical in an Indian meal, and all items including the sweets are served up all on the same plate. Chai served at the end.

DIETARY RESTRICTIONS: May’s dinner will be ovo-lacto-vegetarian. Please let us know when you arrive if you would like us to leave anything off your thali. If you are interested in vegan dinners, email to get put on a list for dairy free/vegan, and you’ll be the first to hear about future menus specific to those restrictions.

MENU:
Becuase of the seasonality of the Menu, dishes may change last minute, BUT here’s a general idea of what you can expect for this May’s Thali:

Starter – Pakora Chaat

Split Pea Dal

Bloody Butcher Grits Porridge

Potato Dry Bhaji

Flat Bread

Jerusalem Artichoke Masala

Greens and Garlic

Egg Kadi

Slow Cooked Walking Onions

Mint Paneer

Dokla (steamed rice and bean cakes)

Cilantro Chutney

Onion Chutney

Tamarind Chutney

Fenugreek Pickle

Salad

Sweet

Water

Chai

Camp Bluebird – 3-Day Retreat for Cancer Survivors
May 22 – May 24 all-day

Camp Bluebird is celebrating its 25th anniversary this year in the beautiful mountains of western North Carolina. It is a three-day retreat for adult cancer survivors with a past or current diagnosis of cancer.
Sponsored by Mission Hospital’s Cancer Program and the AT&T Telephone Pioneers, Camp Bluebird is held each spring and fall. Named after the bluebird, which is considered a symbol of hope, this retreat is for anyone who is 18 years or older with a past or current diagnosis of cancer.
When: May 22-24, 2018
Where: Bonclarken Conference Center – Flat Rock, NC
Camp Bluebird is a safe place where you can share your hopes and fears with others who understand what you are going through, because they have actually walked in your shoes. At Camp Bluebird, you feel that you have been given permission to enjoy life again and not let cancer consume your every thought.
Mission Hospital has always encouraged their oncology nurses to serve as counselors at Camp Bluebird, along with nurses from private oncology offices. We also have social workers, physical therapists, chaplains and Telephone Pioneer counselors who volunteer at the camp. We offer a wide variety of activities, including arts and crafts, Pilates, educational opportunities, Healing Touch (Reiki), fishing and paddleboats, and a live band with a themed costume party.
This special program benefits survivors at any point in their cancer journey, whether they are newly diagnosed, going through treatment, in remission, dealing with a recurrence or in the final stages of their disease. Camp Bluebird has something to offer EVERY survivor at ANY time. Through conversations with other campers and advice from experienced counselors, our campers learn new coping skills that help to sustain them during times of worry and stress.
For more information, contact Leslie Verner, RN, Camp Director, at 828-213-4656 or [email protected].
