An introduction to the fun & exciting Brazilian street dance. Samba owes its rhythm and moves to African dances. The traditional African circle dance with a lone central performer relied on weight shifts, rapid steps, and slides to a 2/4 percussive beat, and a fairly still upper body with arms and hands responding to the hip and leg movements. samba is irresistible, its gyrations richly colored by regional and international influences. Today, it would be impossible to imagine carnival without samba.

No other film has captured the beauty of Western North Carolina as well as The Last of the Mohicans. The stunning cinematography and incredible performances have not been seen on the big screen in a dark theater for many years.
It was filmed mostly in the Blue Ridge Mountains of North Carolina. Locations used include Lake James, Chimney Rock Park and The Biltmore Estate. Some of the waterfalls that were used in the movie include Hooker Falls, Triple Falls, Bridal Veil Falls, and High Falls, all located in the DuPont State Recreational Forest. Another of these falls was Linville Falls, in the mountains of North Carolina. Scenes of Albany were shot in Asheville, NC at The Manor on Charlotte St.

It is brilliant and quietly addictive” – The London Guardian
“New York’s hottest and hippest literary ticket” – The Wall Street Journal
The Moth is an acclaimed not-for-profit organization dedicated to the art and craft of storytelling. It is a celebration of both the raconteur, who breathes fire into true tales of ordinary life, and the storytelling novice, who has lived through something extraordinary and yearns to share it. At the center of each performance is, of course, the story – and The Moth’s directors work with each storyteller to find, shape and present it.
Since its launch in 1997, The Moth has presented thousands of stories, told live and without notes, to standing-room-only crowds worldwide.
Moth shows are renowned for the great range of human experience they showcase. Each show starts with a theme, and the storytellers explore it, often in unexpected ways. Since each story is true and every voice authentic, the shows dance between documentary and theater, creating a unique, intimate, and often enlightening experience for the audience.
Moth stories dissolve socio-economic barriers, expose vulnerabilities, and quietly suggest ways to overcome challenges and see with new eyes.

Between two full-length, solo rock albums of 2017 and 2019, The Suitcase Junket [solo multi-instrumentalist Matt Lorenz] releases a surprise May’18 EP, entitled Live With Others. The EP consists of six tracks recorded live in concert with special guests from the New England music scene, including Boston string band Twisted Pine, bluesman Tim Gearan, Kate Lorenz of Kate Lorenz and The Constellations, James Rohr and Mike Castellana of the Blue Ribbons, Isa Burke of Lula Wiles, and wildcard Barry Rothman who plays turntables and musical toys.
“Without any doubt you expect to hear the skeleton” are the first words to hit your ears and it’s a wild ride from there into the spaced-out, psychedelic slow jam of “Sandman,” which was improvised on the spot when performed, like most of the tracks on the EP, at Atwoods Tavern in Cambridge, MA. A fierce and punchy punk tune cranks up in the irreverent “New Undertaker,” which tells of a corpse falling in love with its mortician. Matt Lorenz, the human behind The Suitcase Junket, alleges that the chorus of this song was heard in a dream and woke him up laughing. “In My Name” was recorded at Caffe Lena in Saratoga Springs, NY, and is the only track without other musicians sitting in, though Lorenz credits the crowd at Lena’s in the album notes, and they do shout out here and there between the growling slide guitar lines.

“My music is for my people. I say it and play it how I feel it. I won’t play it at all if I’m not feeling it. Take it or leave it, that’s just how I do my thing. These blues are my life. It’s not game of fame and fortune. This is about the struggle of a man’s very soul put to music. So it is very serious” ~ Roots
“Blues Power is a state of mind that one can develop during hard times in life that allows that person to build up so much tolerance towards the effects of going through hard times often that they actually smile a lot and stay cool through it all, because nothing can break what is already broken..Take that and a sweet 12 bar shuffle and you’ve got Blues Power”

Ghost-Note
Multi-Grammy Award winning artists Robert Sput Searight and Nate Werth take percussion out of the shadows and into the spotlight with their new project, Ghost-Note. World renown fortheir ongoing catalog with international sensation Snarky Puppy, this dynamic duo expands their rhythmical voice into a celebration of music in all its forms. This is music that takes listeners on a mind-blowing journey, inspired by the influencesof James Brown, Prince, and J Dilla to name a few.
Since forming, Ghost-Note’s sound has evolved to a state that can best be described as ‘conscious funk’ – an elaborate and sonically powerful surge of the tremendous talents that each of the players provides, with the bandleaders leaning back andletting the band go. The core lineup is a rotating cast of heavy hitters – all stretching to meet the expanding nature of the band. The explosive rhythm fueled band, deeply rooted in neckbreaking funk, is comprised of the industry’s best and quickly becoming one of the most anticipated live shows of today.
Band members include A.J. Brown (Fred Hammond) on bass, internet star Dywane “MonoNeon” Thomas (Prince) on bass & guitar, Sylvester Onyejiaka (Prince, Quantic) baritone sax, tenor sax, & flute, Xavier Taplin (Prince) on keyboards, Jonathan Mones (Funky Knuckles, RC and the Gritz) on alto sax& flute, Mike Jelani Brooks (Kirk Franklin, RC & the Gritz) on tenor saxophone & flute, Domi Degalle on keyboards, Vaughn “V-keys” Henry on keyboards, Nick Werth (Galaxe, Yak Attack) on xylosynth, and Alvin Ford Jr. (Pretty Lights, Dumpstaphunk) on drums.

Jonathan Scales Fourchestra
Jonathan Scales is one of the most innovative steel pannists on the planet, and is redefining and challenging traditional expectations of his signature instrument. In his hands, the sonic palette of an instrument often associated with cruise ships and tropical resorts is radically expanded to mimic the role of horns, piano, vibraphone or marimba due to his stunning, virtuosic technique. Scales’ mesmerizing compositions have captivated listeners and elevated him to the status of a true composer, forging new territory in the medium of instrumental music.
Although Scales’ writing produces songs that are ultimately accessible and danceable, the compositions can be remarkably complex and difficult to perform. As a result, the power trio whimsically named Jonathan Scales Fourchestra has always had a fluid lineup top-notch musicians, and even included an “all-star” version with bassist MonoNeon (Prince, Ghost Note), drummer Robert “Sput” Searight (Snarky Puppy, Snoop Dogg) and percussionist Weedie Braimah (Trombone Shorty, Nth Power), as well as a number of other talented marquee value players. Throughout these changes, Scales has demonstrated remarkable perseverance and persistence, a topic that he presented in a TED Talk, while continuing to write and develop his craft and touring the North American and European club and festival circuit—as well as dates in Japan, Central America and The Caribbean. Scales also represented the United States through the Department of State as a musical ambassador in a four week concert tour of China, Taiwan, Hong Kong and Indonesia in early 2017, an honor for which he was chosen from among three hundred finalists.
Jonathan Scales’ newest release, PILLAR—his sixth album, and fourth release on taste-maker label Ropeadope—is a testament to the grit and tenacity he possesses, while also serving as an introduction of his new, full-time rhythm battery consisting of bassist E’Lon JD and drummer Maison Guidry. These two formidable young lions hold their own in the company of an incredible cast of special guests, including bassists Victor Wooten, Oteil Burbridge and MonoNeon, trumpeter Christian Scott aTunde Adjuah, saxophonist Jeff Coffin, keyboardist Shaun Martin, percussionist Weedie Braimah and banjo pioneer Béla Fleck. It is the inclusion of Béla Fleck on this record that stands out most notably in context of Scales’ own personal story, and in this regard, PILLAR represents a remarkable victory for the music lover inside of the 33-year-old Asheville, NC based artist.
As a young man at Appalachian State University in Boone, NC, Jonathan was inspired by the compositions of Béla Fleck, and would often arrive early at Flecktones concerts, hoping to speak with his hero, as memorialized in an early Fourchestra song called “Lurkin’”. Whereas Scales’ talent and creativity could have been focused on other instruments he studied, such as saxophone, he fell in love with the sound of the steel pans. Hearing Béla Fleck’s transformative approach to the banjo had a significant, even reassuring impact on Jonathan, who was already independently seeking to rethink how steel pans could be played and employed in compositions. In fact, Driftwood Magazine made a similar observation, when it wrote that “Scales is to steel pans what Béla Fleck is to the banjo—an über innovator.” Still lurking whenever he could at Flecktones shows, Jonathan was writing his own tasteful, outside-the-box, avant-garde compositions, and independently released his first three albums while performing regionally in the Southeastern U.S.. His band was establishing a reputation as something of an outlier, and attracted the attention of Ropeadope Records, who released Jonathan Scales Fourchestra’s eponymous debut—fully orchestrated with horns and strings—in 2013. The record reached #6 on the iTunes Jazz charts.
Jonathan’s persistence was rewarded when Flecktones members Victor Wooten, Howard Levy, Jeff Coffin and Roy “Futureman” Wooten—the inspiration for the album Mixtape Symphony (Ropeadope)— began to make appearances on recordings and at live shows. Béla Fleck himself was also beginning to take notice: in considering Scales’ 2016 cover of his composition “The Imposter”, he remarked “To say I am impressed would be a gross understatement…”. Scales’ dream-come-true moment happened in June 2016, when he was invited to perform with Béla Fleck & The Flecktones at a large outdoor concert in Richmond, VA. Over the course of these three formative years, Jonathan developed a close bond with Victor Wooten, and has appeared many times as a guest artist at his annual Bass Camp, and in May 2018 he was a featured performer on a Victor Wooten date in North Carolina, sharing the stage with legendary drummer Dennis Chambers in a trio format, as well as performing duets with Wooten.
Bringing the relationship full circle, Béla Fleck’s performance on the song “Focus Poem” serves as something of an affirmation of the young composer’s talent and persistence. PILLAR is a record stacked with world-renowned virtuosos performing at the top of their games, which have inspired and encouraged Jonathan Scales to push forward and ultimately come into his own as an artist. Jonathan himself, deeply honored and humbled by his musical heroes’ appreciation and support of his art, describes the album as a culmination of ten years of dedication and hard work, and “…a soundtrack to loss, focus, perseverance and triumph. Like pillars, we stand strong on unsteady ground, weathering life’s storms. Like pillars, we must sometimes be reconstructed and revitalized to withstand the crushing weight of our own worlds.”

ROXY ROCA
No one leaves a Roxy Roca show dissatisfied. A sonic shot to the arm of Texas infused, powerhouse-southern soul, funk, and rock n’ roll complete with a certain tightness only achievable after playing an average of 200 shows a year.
Roxy Roca shows are like stepping into a tent-revival somewhere in the Deep South, and crooner Taye Cannon is here to speak the gospel of peace, love, and positivity. Each tune flows over with hooky guitar riffs, funky backbeats, slammin’ horn lines, and lyrics of love, heartache, and a message that ‘happiness is a choice’, sung with a conviction and sincerity as only Roxy Roca’s Cannon can deliver.
Hailing from Austin, TX the band has grown in leaps and bounds since it’s inception in 2011. Building upon the band’s first full-length album, “Ain’t Nothin’ Fancy” with sounds reminiscent of Stax Records and Motown, the band plans to release it’s follow up later this year
titled “People Rise Up”. The album was recorded at The Bubble in Austin with none other than Grammy Governor Chris “Frenchie” Smith (The Darkness, Toadies, Jet).
Recently, Roxy Roca released the first single off the album “Taurus”, complete with an complimentary music video and now available on all major streaming services. With the guidance of super-producer Smith, the new album features a grittier, edgier sound steeped in the hard funk and blues of the 1970s, but with one foot firmly planted in today’s music landscape.
Further plans for 2018 include an official showcase at this year’s SXSW and a return to Japan for the band’s second international tour.

Reclaimed Creations is a unique sculpture exhibit created by renowned artist Sayaka Ganz. Utilizing reclaimed plastic objects, such as discarded utensils, Ganz creates amazing sculptures that visually appear unified at a distance, but are in fact separated when examined up close. Described as using a “3D impressionistic” style, Ganz’s exhibit includes installations of animals in motion, which are in rich in color and energy, to create an illusion of form.
About the Artist
Born in Yokohama, Japan, Sayaka Ganz grew up living in Japan, Brazil and Hong Kong. She received her Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from Indiana University, Bloomington, and a Master of Fine Arts degree in sculpture from Bowling Green State University in Ohio. A lecturer and teacher, Ganz’s work has been displayed at various institutions around the globe, including the Hermann Geiger Foundation in Cecina, Italy, the Isle Gallery in Isle of Man, and the Monterey Bay Aquarium in California.
My work is about perceiving harmony, even in situations that appear chaotic from the inside. When observing my sculptures up close, one might see gaps, holes and items being held on only by small points; step away, however, and the sculptures reveal the harmony created when the objects are aligned to the same general (but not identical) direction. Similarly, it is important to gain perspective by stepping back from current problems and look at the larger picture. Then one can perceive the beauty and patterns that exist.”
