Join us for a stimulating discussion on the history of American fascism and its relationship to the Trump Era.
Most of us have been taught, and continue to believe, that fascism is a totalitarian form of government featuring dictators like Mussolini and Hitler. All fascism in world history must resemble these two models. In his new primer, “The Coming of the American Behemoth: The Origins of Fascism in the United States, 1920-1940,” author Michael Roberto asks us to reconsider the nature of fascism and its American manifestations.
Taking root in the movement of monopoly-finance capital during the Great Boom of the 1920s and the Great Depression of the 1930s, American fascism differed in its particular national form from its European counterparts. In this presentation, Michael will point to the social and political character of these fascist processes as they arose from capitalist imperatives and the needs of what was then called “Big Business.” The threat of fascism from finance capital will be contrasted with that of “small fry fascisiti,” including Asheville’s own William Dudley Pelley, who created the Silver Shirts in 1933.
Michael Joseph Roberto retired in 2016 from the faculty of North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University, the largest historically black educational institution in the United States, where he taught contemporary world history. A longtime political activist in Greensboro, NC, he has worked as a journalist and published essays in Monthly Review, Socialism and Democracy, and other scholarly journals.

The Winter Youth Retreats are an opportunity for adventure, spiritual growth and worship in the mountains of Western North Carolina! While energized worship with great bands is built into every program weekend, groups now have more freedom in choosing their recreational activities. You can ski or do a mission project during your time at Lake Junaluska.
This year’s theme is Be Fearless, inspired by Psalms 118:6 “The Lord is with me, I will not be afraid. What can mere mortals do to me?”
The world can feel like a scary place. With the Lord on our side, we are freed from fear and freed to live into who we were created to be. When your youth come to Lake Junaluska this winter they will be bolstered by the word of God through powerful worship, and will learn to Be Fearless in faith, fellowship and fun.
Join speaker Stephanie Hand and worship band The Stephens Family at Lake Junaluska this winter. Lodging and meal packages are available, starting from $186/person. Call 800-222-4930 to book or visit lakejunaluska.com/winteryouth for more information!

Bid on ‘Manly Man’ services at auction
Proceeds to benefit Haywood Schools Foundation
Women of Waynesville will host a Manly Man Auction at 6 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 9, at Frog Level Brewing to raise funds for the Haywood County Schools Foundation.
Attendees will be able to bid on a variety of professional services, handyman services and date packages offered up by highly-qualified men in the community. Some of the bidding packages include lawn care services, firewood cutting services, a survival training camping trip for two, private ballroom dancing lessons, percussion lessons, an estate plan, and more.
WOW member Celeste Ybanez, also the chief operating officer of Frog Level Brewing, is campaigning to be crowned Queen at the school foundation’s annual Mardi Gras Ball on Feb. 23 — to win she has to raise the most funds for the foundation. All donations will benefit the foundation’s mission of providing classroom grants for teachers and scholarships for graduating seniors. In the last few years, WOW members have helped raise more than $25,000 for the schools foundation. WOW’s mission is to support the needs of women and children in Haywood County.
There is no cover charge for the Manly Man Auction event. If you have a service you would like to donate for the auction, call 828.550.9978.

“Bop and Evey” International Debut
Written by Caoimhín Ó Rían
Featuring David Yeates and Erin McCarson
A brother and a sister who have been disconnected in recent years find themselves back in their parents’ home for Christmas only to rediscover and attempt to solve their childhood issues. Watch Robert and Evelyn relive their former selves in this heartwarming comedic drama.
This play evolved from an Acting/Writing Exercise which took place in Coláiste Dhúlaigh in 2010, where two actors (Caoimhín Ó Rían and Megan Keegan) wrote and performed a short scene using language in the most unique and creative of fashions. “Bop and Evey” became one of the most celebrated creative achievements of the year and went on to perform on the Dublin Theatre scene.

Music by Tom Snow; Lyrics by Dean Pitchford; Stage Adaptation by Dean Pitchford and Walter Bobbie
A musical version of the 1984 film! When teenager Ren McCormack moves from Chicago to a small town, he isn’t prepared for the stifling local laws, including a ban on dancing and rock music instituted by the local preacher. As he struggles to fit in, he encourages his classmates to defy the local pastor and call for a rock’n’roll prom. Fist pump!
“Footloose” combines songs from the hit 1984 soundtrack with dynamic new songs – and though it might seem like just a lot of fun, it also celebrates the wisdom of opening minds and listening to the voices of young people. Director Jerry Crouch, music director Lynda Ferrell Shuler, and choreographer Tina Pisano-Foor have put together an incredible cast of students and adults from our community to bring “Footloose” to life!

Set sail for laughter as Bertie Wooster revels in life aboard the Vanderley yacht. Bertie is the pampered guest of the lively Lady Stella (very fetching profile), accompanied, as always, by his peerless valet, Jeeves. If only Bertie’s pal Crumpet hadn’t assaulted a prince. In the blink of an eye, Bertie is masquerading as a romance novelist, Crumpet’s posing as his own long-lost twin, and a sinister foreign count is challenging Bertie to a duel. Will this madcap case of mistaken identities end in Bertie’s doom–or worse, his marriage? Have no fear; Jeeves will sort it all out.

After an amazed crowd and a standing ovation last show here, we had no choice but to bring him back…. Live at The Artisan of Flat Rock, Malcolm Holcombe. Tickets $12.50 plus ticket handling fee.
The voice of Tom Waits, the melodic symphony of that of Leonard Cohen, and guitar picking like you have never heard before live…
“Malcolm Holcombe is possessed by a singular sort of solitary genius that, like the novelist William Faulkner, is yet the voice of an entire region – the South–and even of a generation, though somehow transcendent of it, timeless. If true greatness moves from the particular to the universal, his music speaks for all of humanity while remaining entirely his own.
A North Carolina son of the Blue Ridge Mountains, Holcombe belongs to a tradition of bardic singer-songwriters that includes such legends as Townes Van Zandt, Blaze Foley, Gurf Morlix and David Olney. He is an acclaimed contemporary of Emmylou Harris and Steve Earle and has shared the stage with Merle Haggard, Richard Thompson, John Hammond, and Leon Russell. Yet Holcombe stands apart, his soul-stirring lyrics are hill country high poetry, the music pure back roads. His musicianship is uncanny, like no other, as though he had invented the guitar.” — Alan Kaufman

Broadway’s hit crowd-pleaser takes you to the stoops of the Bronx in the 1960s – where a young man is caught between the father he loves and the mob boss he’d love to be.
Bursting with high-energy dance numbers and original doo-wop tunes from Alan Menken, the songwriter of Beauty and the Beast, A Bronx Tale is an unforgettable story of loyalty and family.
Academy Award® winner Robert De Niro and Tony® winner Jerry Zaks direct this streetwise musical – based on Academy Award nominee Chazz Palminteri’s story – that The New York Times hails as “A Critics’ Pick! The kind of tale that makes you laugh and cry.”

Known for its high-energy, positive sound, Acoustic Syndicate delivers a genre-defying performance, masterfully blending its eclectic influences with trademark finesse that only 17 years of cohesive teamwork can bring.
Acoustic Syndicate is the product of Cleveland County’s McMurry clan. Guitarist Steve “Big Daddy” McMurry is joined by his cousins, Bryon McMurry on banjo and Fitz McMurry on drums. The three McMurrys also bring a trademark vocal trio that only a lifetime of singing together can deliver.
Joining the McMurrys in 1998 on bass, Jay Sanders has become part of the family. A long time resident of Asheville, NC, his seamless blending of musical genres and driving style brought a completion to the band’s sound that continues to characterize and define. When not with Acoustic Syndicate, Jay can now be seen playing with Donna The Buffalo or his own group, The E.Normus Trio.
Formed in 1992, Acoustic Syndicate has had a long and storied career. They spent well over a dozen years on the road, playing at the original Bonnaroo, MerleFest, the Telluride Bluegrass Festival, Memphis in May and many many other clubs, festivals and events.
The band had the distinct honor of being invited to perform as a part of FarmAid in 2001, a significant occasion in respect to their family’s agrarian history. The McMurry family are farmers, and continue to cultivate the same land their family has for generations.
In 2005, the band decided to hang up the towel for a little while. They put their touring career on hold with a legendary five hour performance at SmileFest. In a recent interview with Frank Ruggerio from the Mountain Times in Boone, NC, Steve McMurry says “With the music industry in dire straits, the band would have had to commit to another five years of heavy touring to sustain itself. None of us really could see being gone from our families and people for that long a period of time… We had a great run of it, and thought we’d just call it quits and be regular people for a while.”
But the band’s audience felt otherwise. “People wouldn’t let us quit playing,” McMurry said. “They’d keep calling and calling, so after a couple years we decided we’d get together and see if we still knew how to play.” The results speak for themselves, and McMurry said the band is now performing without the pressures touring so often brings, and rather playing for the fun of it.
In 2009, Acoustic Syndicate was honored by being voted the 6th top artist of the last 20 years by the listeners of Western North Carolina’s WNCW radio station.
Their discography includes six official releases including two for Sugar Hill Records. Their 2003 effort “Terra Firma” was voted the number one album of the year by the listeners of WNCW, and 2004’s “Long Way Round” placed number seven. But it is not going to end there. Acoustic Syndicate plans on cutting a new record. The band will visit the studio this winter to craft an album of all-new material.
