In March, the City of Asheville launched an extensive community engagement process as a listening tool toward revision of the municipal ordinance governing noise in the City limits (Chapter 10 – Article IV). Led by the Development Services Department, a listening and learning process has been happening through multiple methods. We’d like to provide residents with an update.

Dressing for the Occasion: a New Temporary Exhibit
May 16 @ 9:00 am – May 17 @ 5:00 am
Carl Sandburg Home National Historic Site

A new temporary exhibit titled “Dressing for the Occasion: Mid-Century Sandburg as Celebrity and Family Man” opens on May 13, 2019. The exhibit, which runs through October, is part of the Sandburg Home tour and features clothing and accessories from both the park’s permanent collection and loaned items from the Sandburg family.

“Dressing for the Occasion” offers visitors a window into the style, culture, and feel of mid-century America. The family’s clothing and accessories weave together the roles of Carl Sandburg as a prominent writer, celebrity, father, and husband. This temporary exhibit offers an exciting opportunity for the public to view objects that are normally in storage or in the possession of Sandburg family members. Tours of the Sandburg Home are offered daily from 9:30 am to 4:30 pm. Tickets are available first come, first served, each day from the visitor information area in the ground level of the Sandburg Home.

Nearly every room in the historically furnished house museum will be included in the exhibit. Visitors will see the characteristic scarves Carl Sandburg wore as he played his guitar and sang folk songs to entertain his family and guests, the dress Lilian Sandburg wore to meet President Lyndon B. Johnson, and many other mid-century pieces worn by the Sandburgs and their daughters. Historic photographs, paired with the clothing, will provide context.

Ben Frankin’s 13 Virtues Circle
May 16 @ 10:30 am – 12:00 pm
Jubilee Community Church

Founding father and master inventor Benjamin Franklin was also a pioneer of self-improvement. In 1727 Franklin formed the Junto, a weekly mutual-improvement club made up of a group of his peers and fellow Philadelphia tradesmen to discuss 13 core virtues and explore how to better incorporate them in their lives – and use them as a foundation for enriching the world. The club became the launching pad for all sorts of civic initiatives: the public library, the post office and the volunteer fire department, which have had a lasting impact on society.

Join us while we gather to discuss the 13 virtues in the context of the present day. We’ll meet weekly for 13 weeks and commit to making better and more conscious choices about our own behavior and work with others to spread those virtues through acts of kindness and good deeds. There is no cost and it is open to all!

Here is my bio:

She’s been facilitating groups and leading motivational workshops throughout the U.S. since 1989 (locally at Flatiron Writers Room, The Purpose Collective, The Creative Facilitators Meetup, OLLI – UNCA and The Asheville Area Arts Council).
