SAHC Hike #5: Challenge Hike at Hampton Creek Cove State Natural Area, TN

Location: Hampton Creek Cove State Natural Area

Start Time: 9 am

Est End Time: 3 pm

Difficulty: 11+ Very Strenuous

Leader: Travis Bordley, our Roan Ecologist

Our challenge hike starts at Hampton Creek Cove and journeys 4.1 miles and 1,850 feet of elevation on the Overmountain Victory Trail, through pastured farm roads and wooded footpaths to Yellow Mountain Gap on the Appalachian Trail. After a short stretch on the Appalachian Trail, we will leave trails behind and bushwack to our DeYoung property and eventually back to our cars. Once we leave the Appalachian trail, our hike will be extremely steep downhill with no guiding path. At the DeYoung Property, an open pasture will greet us with incredible mountain views. We will then travel down the pasture to a paved road leading us back to our cars. The total hike is about 6.5 miles with lots of elevation gain.

We will be hiking on The Overmountain Victory National Historic Trail from our cars to Yellow Mountain Gap. This trail commemorates the “Overmountain Men” who fought the Battle of King’s Mountain in 1780 during the American Revolution. Thomas Jefferson deemed the Overmountain Men the “turn of the tide” in the American Revolution.

Difficulty: Moderate, 5

Leaders: Tom Gatti & David Smith (both former SAHC seasonal Roan Ecologists)

Join us for a moderate 3-mile hike led by Tom Gatti and David Smith (both former SAHC seasonal Roan Ecologists)  in the Hampton Creek Cove State Natural Area. The Southern Appalachian Highlands Conservancy purchased Hampton Creek Cove before transferring it to the State of Tennessee for permanent protection. We continue to help manage the property for species habitat and recreation. The hike will feature the chance to see and hear Golden-winged Warblers, the ruins of the Lenoir Shell homestead, and BIG old-growth trees. Witnessing poplar, northern red oak, black cherry, and sugar maple trees exceeding 3 and 4 feet in diameter will take you to a different time. Along the trail, keep your eyes peeled for black cohosh, spiderwort, showy orchis, woodland stonecrop, and many other wildflowers!

Join Jay Leutze on our Little Cove Creek Preserve for a morning of storytelling and appreciation for one of the most unique places in the world. Little Cove Creek is a 47-acre preserve featuring a mature high elevation forest, a heritage apple orchard, a stunning stream, and a newly renovated log cabin that will host our afternoon social the same day. If you would like to, we will also be taking periodic strolls down to the creek, where participants can get their feet wet, find a salamander, and enjoy the cascading waterfalls. Anyone and everyone is invited, whether you have a story to tell or not. Long-time Roan residents will appreciate this event as a time to recount how times have changed, what has been preserved, and acknowledge the memories made in our timeless corner of the world.

These missions teach teamwork and STEM principles while giving campers fun and exciting experiences. The camp is an immersive journey amidst our historic campus which played a critical role in the first space race, and will help poise your camper for a role in the next.

Teams will research real technologies and techniques to build and launch a spacecraft, set science and research goals, and ensure everything needed is sent along. They will also need to choose a crew and care for their health and well-being, perform outreach and gain public support, and navigate funding and political challenges.

Join the Western North Carolina Historical Association (WNCHA) for the second of three events in our ReadWNC series! With authors and historians, we will explore the facts behind the fiction in these books centered in WNC. In this series, authors and historians explore the facts behind the fiction in books centered in WNC. We encourage you to read the books in advance and bring your own questions to the discussion. You can find all three books at Malaprop’s Bookstore here in Asheville. This event airs live via Zoom, Tuesday, July 19 from 6:00-7pm.

Our series continues with Lee Smith’s novel Guests on Earth, set at Asheville’s Highland Hospital during the period when Zelda Fitzgerald resided there, before she and eight other women perished in a terrible fire in 1948. Smith says: “In this novel I offer a solution for the unsolved mystery of that fire, along with a group of characters both imagined and real, and a series of events leading up to the tragedy. My narrator is a younger patient named Evalina Toussaint, daughter of a New Orleans exotic dancer. Evalina is a talented pianist who connects to Zelda on many levels as she plays accompaniment for the many concerts, theatricals, and dances constantly being held at Highland Hospital.”

 

About the Presenters:

Dr. Alaina Doten is the executive director of the Scott and Zelda Fitzgerald Museum in Montgomery, Alabama. She has a PhD in history and art history from the University of Melbourne.

A former farmer, sailor, and journalist, Valerie Nieman is the author of five novels, one short story collection, three collections of poetry, and two poetry chapbooks. To the Bones, her genre-bending novel about Appalachia published by West Virginia University Press in 2019, was a finalist for the Manly Wade Wellman Award and the Killer Nashville Award. Her work has appeared in dozens of journals including MonkeybicycleStorySouth, and The Georgia Review and received fellowships from the North Carolina Arts Council and the NEA, among others. She’s most often reading and writing, but in the life left over, she enjoys films, Formula 1 racing, football, traveling, and, conversely, staying at home. PARI’s summer STEM and space camp programming is designed to inspire your young scientist’s curiosity, passion, and confidence to discover something extraordinary. We give campers experiences that encourage deeper thinking and problem solving skills while finding opportunities for comradery, adventure, and fun in the incredible Pisgah Forest region.

Our Mission Control camps provide simulated missions that cover the many topics and skills necessary for a successful exploration of world beyond our own. We’ll use the same kinds of processes that NASA, SpaceX and others use in developing and conducting journeys into space. These missions teach teamwork and STEM principles while giving campers fun and exciting experiences. The camp is an immersive journey amidst our historic campus which played a critical role in the first space race, and will help poise your camper for a role in the next.

Teams will research real technologies and techniques to build and launch a spacecraft, set science and research goals, and ensure everything needed is sent along. They will also need to choose a crew and care for their health and well-being, perform outreach and gain public support, and navigate funding and political challenges.

PARI’s research based camps are aimed at the camper who wants to experience what its like to be a researcher in astronomy, astrophysics, and astrobiology. Scientists and researchers with careers in space science lead this academically challenging curriculum that has been refined for nearly two decades.

Camps begin with an intense first few days of introductions to the instruments, science, and math needed to conduct research. They’ll be guided through choosing a research goal from the menu investigations we believe they can successfully conduct with radio and optical telescopes, and vast archives, provided by PARI and its partners.

The importance of both individual and team based work is emphasized while campers are guided through the research process. They’ll learn to share their progress and conclusions in the same ways expected in journals and at astronomical conferences.

Romance Book Club

Self-taught photographer George Masa (born Masahara Iizuka in Osaka, Japan), arrived in Asheville, North Carolina at the turn of the twentieth century amid a period of great transition in the southern Appalachians.
Masa’s photographs from the 1920s and early 1930s are stunning windows into an era where railroads hauled out the remaining old-growth timber with impunity, new roads were blasted into hillsides, and an activist community emerged to fight for a new national park. Masa began photographing the nearby mountains and helping to map the Appalachian Trail, capturing this transition like no other photographer of his time. His images, along with his knowledge of the landscape, became a critical piece of the argument for the Great Smoky Mountains National Park, compelling John D. Rockefeller to donate $5 million for initial land purchases. Despite being hailed as the “Ansel Adams of the Smokies,” Masa died, destitute and unknown, in 1933.
In George Masa’s Wild Vision: A Japanese Immigrant Imagines Western North Carolina, poet and environmental organizer Brent Martin explores the locations Masa visited, using first-person narratives to contrast, lament, and exalt the condition of the landscape the photographer so loved and worked to interpret and protect. The book includes seventy-five of Masa’s photographs, accompanied by Martin’s reflections on Masa’s life and work.

Brent Martin is the author of three chapbook collections of poetry and of The Changing Blue Ridge Mountains: Essays on Journeys Past and Present. His poetry and essays have been published in the North Carolina Literary Review, Pisgah Review, Tar River Poetry, Chattahoochee Review, Eno Journal, New Southerner, Kudzu Literary Journal, Smoky Mountain News and elsewhere. He lives in the Cowee community in Western North Carolina, where he and his wife, Angela Faye Martin, run Alarka Institute.

While a luscious layer cake may exemplify the towering glory of southern baking, like everything about the American South, baking is far more complicated than it seems. Rebecca Sharpless here weaves a brilliant chronicle, vast in perspective and entertaining in detail, revealing how three global food traditions—Indigenous American, European, and African—collided with and merged in the economies, cultures, and foodways of the South to create what we know as the southern baking tradition.

Recognizing that sentiments around southern baking run deep, Sharpless takes delight in deflating stereotypes as she delves into the surprising realities underlying the creation and consumption of baked goods. People who controlled the food supply in the South used baking to reinforce their power and make social distinctions. Who used white cornmeal and who used yellow, who put sugar in their cornbread and who did not had traditional meanings for southerners, as did the proportions of flour, fat, and liquid in biscuits. By the twentieth century, however, the popularity of convenience foods and mixes exploded in the region, as it did nationwide. Still, while some regional distinctions have waned, baking in the South continues to be a remarkable, and remarkably tasty, source of identity and entrepreneurship.

Rebecca Sharpless is professor of history at Texas Christian University. Her most recent book is Cooking in Other Women’s Kitchens: Domestic Workers in the South, 1865–1960.

The Rev. David C. (Kirk) Brown is the recently retired chaplain of Christ School. Kirk received his A.B. from Davidson College, his M.A. from the University of Virginia (Germanic Studies), and his M.Div. from Virginia Theological Seminary.  Kirk is a member of the UNC Press Advancement Council and lives with his wife, Shelley, on a farm in Fletcher.

Laurel River Trail near Hot Springs NC

Cool off in the Laurel River, get your feet wet, experienced swimmers

Drive time to the trailhead: 40-55 minutes

Distance: 7+- miles, Out and Back
Elevation Gain: 767 ft
Difficulty: Easy, moderate, some stream crossings
Time: on trail 3hrs
Pace: 2 mph
MEETUP LOCATION: Ingles Gas Express at Ingles Market, 863 Brevard Rd, across from the Asheville Outlets near I-25. Park near the Gas Station. Look for Blue CRV with Meetup sign. We’ll carpool to the trailhead. Suggested driver donation $7.

What to bring: swim wear? shoes/water shoes, hiking poles, (if you’re getting in the water, bring change of clothes), rain gear??, change of shoes.

Trail length is 7 miles. We may or may not do the entire length.

Described as mostly easy. This out and back trail follows the Laurel River outside of Marshall and Hot Springs with scenic views of many geological formations, rapids, and former railroad town life. Quoted from the HikeWNC website: ” This trail follows Big Laurel Creek through a scenic gorge to its junction with the French Broad River at the old logging ghost town of Runion.”

The trail is an old railroad bed which used to carry logs to the Runion sawmill in the 1920’s, and as such, is mostly level. However, it’s rocky and rooty in spots, so do bring the boots. Expect some muddy trail conditions.

A few small streams flow across the trail at various points, and bluffs tower over the river making the valley narrow and enclosed with precipitous slopes on either side. Huge boulders choke the gorge forming raging rapids in places, and a few deep holes. The trail nears its end at the former logging town of Runion. In its heyday, Runion was home to more than 1,000 people. Brick chimneys and crumbling foundations still remain – one of the few “ghost towns” in North Carolina.”

Cove Creek Falls Hike

3.6 mile out and back, ~700 ft elevation gain, to explore two falls in Pisgah. Bring lunch and a swimsuit – we’ll take time to rest and play in the water if folks want!

A later start (yay!) but Pisgah parking holiday weekend will be… challenging. Start time is when carpool leaves from The Hub at 276 and 280. We’ll be at trailhead (Cove Creek and Candy Bottom Parking off Fish Hatchery Road) ready to hike at 11:15.
