Dearly Departed
Nov 18 @ 2:30 pm – 4:00 pm
Mars Hill University

Award winning New York City director and actor Reginald Wilson will be the guest director of “Dearly Departed,” the next play presented by Mars Hill University’s theatre arts department. Performances are at 7:30 p.m. on Thursday through Saturday, November 15-17, 2018, with a 2:30 p.m. matinee on Sunday, November 18. The production will feature director talkbacks after each performance; an opening night reception before the production on Thursday, November 15; and a diversity improv workshop at 12 p.m. on Sunday, November 18. Extra events are included with ticket purchases for that day’s performance.

Dearly Departed, written by David Bottrell and Jessie Jones, is a fast moving play that takes place in the backwoods of the Bible Belt. The beleaguered Turpin family proves that living and dying in the South are seldom tidy and always hilarious. Despite their earnest efforts to pull themselves together for their father’s funeral, the Turpins’ other problems keep overshadowing the solemn occasion. Amidst the chaos, the Turpins turn for comfort to their friends and neighbors, an eccentric community of misfits who just manage to pull together and help each other through their hours of need, and finally, the funeral.

Tickets are $10 for adults, $5 for students with student identification, free for Mars Hill University students and staff. For more information, contact the Owen Theatre box office at (828) 689-1389.

Dorrance Dance
Nov 18 @ 3:00 pm – 5:00 pm
Peace Center

Dorrance Dance is an award-winning dance company that aims to honor and expand America’s original art form: tap dance. The company’s inaugural performance garnered a Bessie Award for “blasting open our notions of tap.” Founder Michelle Dorrance was awarded a 2018 Doris Duke Artist Award and has been called “one of the most imaginative tap choreographers working today” (The New Yorker).

The program includes the new and exhilarating Myelination (2017), the rarely seen, Bessie Award-winning Three to One (2011), and the whimsical Jungle Blues (2012).

“[An] effervescent, twitchy piece… [Myelination] showcases a bit of everything: from graceful, gliding swoops to one-armed balances that pull hip-hop back to tap… Throughout, Dorrance, a brilliant conductor, pushes the boundaries of tap while exposing its true nature: that it is music.” (The New York Times)

Three to One: “An odd, seemingly impossible marriage of tap and modern dance that came off edgy, seductive, and smart.” (Chicago Tribune)

“Jungle Blues unleashed undulating torsos, rolling hips, and shimmying shoulders. Knees and feet swiveled side to side like well-oiled levers, and dancers slid across the floor and balanced on toes.” (The Boston Globe)

Artisan Entertainment Presents: Pam Stone and Bob Nelson
Nov 18 @ 7:30 pm – 9:30 pm
The Artisan of Flat Rock

The biggest comedy event of the year is coming to The Artisan of Flat Rock, and you won’t want to miss it. One night, one show…. and this will be a sold out show!

Tickets are $25 for members and $30 for non-members (which includes the $5 annual membership) plus $1.50 website handling fee. Tickets are now on sale.

Pam Stone co-starred in the television series Coach for seven seasons as the character, Judy Watkins. She also appeared in the sit-com, “The Drew Carey Show”, the Rob Reiner political documentary, “But Seriously, Folks,” and the George Lucas 1994 film “Radioland Murders,” starring Mary Stuart Masterson and Brian Benben.

Nelson specializes in rubber-faced comedy characters, much as Red Skelton did in his heyday. His most popular originals include Jiffy Jeff, a punch drunk prizefighter with a Gym in NYC; Eppy Epperman, a brilliant but nerdy kid with deeper insights than meet the eye; an entire football team of stereotypical characters and unnamed football stars doing a charity commercial; Wilby Stuckerson, a hillbilly chicken farmer based on a life experience of Nelson’s from Shreveport, Louisiana, and Mr. Pingyeh, an argumentative Asian man who is more eloquent than the people with whom he argues. He is also known for his Jacques-Yves Cousteau impersonations and his “football act” in which he parodies the old team rundowns in the College Football All-Star games, in which players announce their names, numbers and teams (example: “Quasimodo… Notre Dame… halfback!”)

Nelson was Rodney Dangerfield’s opening act for eight years and was featured in two of Rodney’s HBO stand-up comedy showcases, alongside Jerry Seinfeld, Roseanne Barr, Rita Rudner and Bob Saget. That led to two HBO specials starring Nelson, including “Nelson Schmelson”.[1] He considers Rodney his ‘Comedy Godfather’. Nelson was also in a comedy group called “The Identical Triplets” with Eddie Murphy and Rob Bartlett.
