We will also explore what it feels like to “share energy” throughout the rest of the body with areas that feel depleted or less energetic than others.

Kimberly Paul presents Bridging the Gap
Feb 19 @ 6:00 pm – 7:00 pm
Malaprop's Bookstore/Cafe

Live vicariously through Kimberly C. Paul as she shares personal stories and the life lessons she has learned while working with hospice patients over the last 18 years. Each chapter will inspire you to design your own life and death around what matters most. The author, Kimberly C. Paul, will urge you to discard what you thought you knew about death and embrace a new way of thinking when facing the end of life. Her stories emphasize that death and dying are not taboo subjects and encourage you to engage in light-hearted conversations as you face your own death or the passing of a loved one. This innovative and uplifting book is an invitation to move beyond the current standards of what death has come to mean in our culture. Bridging The Gap will empower you to design your death so it reflects your values, likes and dislikes and your personality. Death is not a final destination but a transcendental beginning.

Applying her vast experience as a storyteller to her passion, Kimberly C. Paul is radically changing the way people face end of life. After graduating from Meredith College in Raleigh, NC, Kimberly began working on the set of Saturday Night Live, casting for CBS daytime programming and freelancing for several production companies in New York City. While working in the entertainment industry, Kimberly was captivated by the creative process of developing the arc of the story. As she observed the manic rush of writing comedy skits for live television and watched daytime television actors’ storylines constantly evolve, she realized she had always been interested in the story. For the last 17 years, however, Kimberly has been telling a very different kind of story; a positive, inspiring story about designing a personal blueprint for an individual’s end of life. Kimberly was invited to speak at TEDxAirlie in 2016. Kimberly’s Ted-Talk, “Who’s That?” epitomized her passion for educating individuals about Advance Care Planning and the issues that may occur for individuals and family members if they do not prepare for end of life. During Kimberly’s 18-year career in hospice care, her stories have inspired and empowered many to take action by documenting personal plans prior to the occurrence of a life-ending health crisis. Kimberly’s enthusiasm and passion to positively educate people on how to plan for end of life is evident as she shares her stories through speaking engagements, writing, videos, and film. Our death, if designed, can be a beautiful experience and not just a final.

We ask that you purchase the books you want to be signed at our events from Malaprop’s. When you do this you are not only supporting the work it takes to run an events program, you are also telling the publishers that they should keep sending authors here. Can’t make it to the store for the event? Call us or order the book on our website in advance, and we’ll get it signed for you. Make sure you write your preferences in the comments if you purchase online.

A. Gibert Kennedy: Reading and Signing
Feb 19 @ 7:00 pm – 8:00 pm
Hub City Writers Project

On February 19th at 7pm, A. Gibert Kennedy will be reading from and signing his new book, A South Carolina Upcountry Saga: The Civil War Letters of Barham Bobo Foster and His Family 1860-1863.

Hope, sacrifice, and restoration: throughout the American Civil War and its aftermath, the Foster family endured all of these in no small measure. Drawing from dozens of public and privately owned letters, A. Gibert Kennedy recounts the story of his great-great-grandfather and his family in A South Carolina Upcountry Saga: The Civil War Letters of Barham Bobo Foster and His Family, 1860-1863.

Barham Bobo Foster was a gentleman planter from the Piedmont who signed the South Carolina Ordinance of Secession and served as a lieutenant colonel in the Third South Carolina Volunteers alongside his two sons. Kennedy’s primary sources are letters written by Foster and his sons, but he also references correspondence involving Foster’s daughters and his wife, Mary Ann.

The letters describe experiences on the battlefields of Virginia and South Carolina, vividly detailing camp life, movements, and battles along with stories of bravery, loss, and sacrifice. The Civil War cost Foster his health, all that he owned, and his two sons, though he was able to rebuild with the help of his wife and three daughters. Supplementing the correspondence with maps, illustrations, and genealogical information, Kennedy shows the full arc of the Foster family’s struggle and endurance in the Civil War era.

Gibert Kennedy earned a B.A. in history from East Carolina University and a B.S. in electrical engineering from the University of Tennessee. He retired from a career in the nuclear industry in 2015. Kennedy has a bookselling business in Aiken, S.C. that specializes in South Carolina and Civil War history. He lives in Aiken, S.C. with his wife, Pam and a feral cat.

Celtic Rock Tuesdays!
Feb 19 @ 7:00 pm – 9:00 pm
Triskelion Brewing Company

We’ve been talking to the folks from Bardic Alchemy, a Celtic Rock band from Asheville and they’ve agreed to play at Triskelion as many Tuesdays as they can come down to the Brewery.

Bardic Alchemy is a brand new element in the Celtic Rock world. This trio, based in the mountains of Asheville, North Carolina is comprised of multi-instrumentalist Connell Sanderson, guitarist Nick Marcone and percussionist and vocalist Tyler Watts.

Bardic Alchemy is best described as a psychedelic trip into a musical world that is heavily inspired by the Celtic musical traditions…run through various effects pedals. Everything from soothing, mellifluously reverberating whistle melodies supported by groovy guitar lines and thumping djembe beats to high energy dance tunes on the Scottish and Irish pipes to three part vocal harmonies and even improvised pieces, Bardic Alchemy is a surprisingly dynamic and unpredictable musical journey.

So… Tuesdays… will now be…
