Delve into the ancient art of mixing honeywith local fruit, flowers, roots & herbs to create divine expressions of beverage bliss. This hands-on event will guide participants through the process of harvesting ingredients and preparing them for the mead, discussing basic qualities of flowers, fruits, roots, etc. & how to handle & use them. Then we’ll blend these things together with water & honey, feeding the wild yeasts, to create the beginnings of a most delightful beverage! Folks who are already familiar with basic mead making will delight in learning new tricks of the trade and age old wisdom. Class will include a discussion of yeast, exploring many varieties of commercial yeast and their unique nuances and applications. You’ll learn about wild vs. open fermenting, starter “bugs”, and how to create your own personal yeast strain. We’ll end with a brief discussion on racking, bottling, and storing your brews while sampling a few lovely examples of fermentation and alchemical magick!
$35-75 per person, sliding scale.
Marissa Percoco and her family have been exploring community for years, traveling the backcountry on a shoe-string, from coast to coast through deserts, mountains, hot springs, and oceans. Learning plants, animals, stories, songs and local ways of weaving into harmony with the environment is her family’s passion. Fermentation is a special love of Marissa’s, and she’s been lucky enough to study with several very knowledgeable teachers over the years. Wild Fermenting and ‘liberation from refrigeration’ are special areas of obsession, with an addiction to discovering new uses for strange & exotic plants. Marissa is deeply rooted in the Earthskills movement and is now nesting in Barnardsville, NC. To learn more about Marissa & what she’s up to, check out her website at www.wilderlandia.org.

About Chelsea…
Chelsea picked up a circus-inspired movement practice in 2014, using flow arts and yoga to find her meditation. For a couple years she traveled to different events around the country teaching yoga and circus arts. Partner acrobatics came into her life in 2015 and immediately evolved into her passion. She practiced steadily for a year and attended different immersion’s around the world in order to start teaching a style of her own. Acro heightened her vision for all to experience the connection, patience, trust, strength, community, and insight that this playful path provided. Chelsea loves to combine mindfulness, therapeutics, safety, and challenging skills in her classes. She currently teaches partner acrobatics in Asheville, North Carolina and continues to learn from many great instructors, pulling from their lessons and wisdom to mold into her own teachings.

A lyrical and emotive performer, Nashville-based Cody Fry is a gifted singer/songwriter whose music touches upon soulful pop, jazz, electronic, and orchestral balladry. A native of Northfield, Illinois, Fry grew up in a creative family with a father who wrote commercial jingles for a living. By his teens, he was writing and recording his own songs, and ultimately went on to study music at Nashville’s Belmont University. Graduating in 2012, he released his debut album, Audio:Cinema, and spent several years as a backing musician for other artists. A second album, Keswick, followed in 2014, after which he made it into the early audition rounds on the 14th season of American Idol. The exposure helped build his fan base, and in 2017 he returned with his third solo album, Flying, featuring the highly acclaimed single “Go”. The album found Fry drawing upon his love of film scoring and coloring his songs with full orchestration.
With an ever growing social media following and his publishing being synched with many TV shows and films, Cody’s songs are steadily making their mark in the spotlight. Known for his talent as one of Ben Rector’s band members, Cody is stepping out of the shadows and into his own, opening for Ben, as well as Dave Barnes.

The Purple Onion is pleased to announce Paul Thorn, Sunday, November 11 as part of our Sunday Concert Series. The performance begins at 7 PM. The doors open at 5 PM.. Reservations can be made online or by calling the restaurant at 828-749- 1179.
Paul Thorn has created an innovative and impressive career, pleasing crowds with his muscular brand of roots music – bluesy, rocking and thoroughly Southern American, yet also speaking universal truths. Among those who value originality, inspiration, eccentricity and character – as well as talent that hovers somewhere on the outskirts of genius, the story of Paul Thorn is already familiar. Raised in Tupelo, Mississippi, among the same spirits (and some of the actual people) who nurtured the young Elvis generations before, Paul Thorn has rambled down back roads and jumped out of airplanes, worked for years in a furniture factory, battled four-time world champion boxer Roberto Duran on national television, signed with and been dropped by a major label, performed [on stages with Bonnie Raitt, Mark Knopfler, Sting, and John Prine among many others, and made some of the most emotionally restless yet fully accessible music of our time. He’s also appeared on major television shows such as Late Night with Conan O’Brien and Jimmy Kimmel Live, been the subject of numerous National Public Radio (NPR) features and charted multiple times on the Billboard Top 100 and Americana Radioi Charts. This year, Paul released an album titled Don’t Let the Devil Ride, which he describes as “the culmination of my whole life in music, coming back to my roots.” It marks his first time recording gospel music – featuring guests such as the Blind Boys of Alabama, the McCrary Sisters, and Preservation Hall Horns – and his creation of a body of strikingly original songs that address the foibles of human relationships without necessarily favoring the sacred over the profane.

Reclaimed Creations is a unique sculpture exhibit created by renowned artist Sayaka Ganz. Utilizing reclaimed plastic objects, such as discarded utensils, Ganz creates amazing sculptures that visually appear unified at a distance, but are in fact separated when examined up close. Described as using a “3D impressionistic” style, Ganz’s exhibit includes installations of animals in motion, which are in rich in color and energy, to create an illusion of form.
About the Artist
Born in Yokohama, Japan, Sayaka Ganz grew up living in Japan, Brazil and Hong Kong. She received her Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from Indiana University, Bloomington, and a Master of Fine Arts degree in sculpture from Bowling Green State University in Ohio. A lecturer and teacher, Ganz’s work has been displayed at various institutions around the globe, including the Hermann Geiger Foundation in Cecina, Italy, the Isle Gallery in Isle of Man, and the Monterey Bay Aquarium in California.
My work is about perceiving harmony, even in situations that appear chaotic from the inside. When observing my sculptures up close, one might see gaps, holes and items being held on only by small points; step away, however, and the sculptures reveal the harmony created when the objects are aligned to the same general (but not identical) direction. Similarly, it is important to gain perspective by stepping back from current problems and look at the larger picture. Then one can perceive the beauty and patterns that exist.”

North Carolina Guardian ad Litem Programs Join Together to Contribute to Food Banks
The North Carolina GAL program is currently collecting jars of peanut butter and jelly to donate to food pantries across the state. Our Buncombe County donations will go directly to Swannanoa Valley Christian Ministry and Owen Middle School. We are joining others in North Carolina in a project that honors service to others. We launch our PB&J campaign NOW, and we end on Sunday, January 20, 2019, the National Day of Service (the day before MLK Jr. Day).
This is our 3rd annual statewide service project undertaken by the staff, volunteers, friends and supporters of GAL. This is the 1st year that Buncombe County is participating; we’ll see how many donations we receive, and we hope this helps to further share our name with the greater community, bringing Guardian ad Litem more into the public eye. For 35 years, GALs have represented the best interest of children in court. Much of the work we do is confidential in nature and therefore, our work is largely unknown outside of juvenile court. This project is a way for us to engage our communities in provisioning their Food Banks while at the same time highlighting who we are and what we do.
Encourage your friends, family, local businesses, places of worship, schools and neighborhoods to get involved and participate. We have flyers for the campaign in our office if you’d be willing to post them in your local “hot spots!” Please use the attached logo and spread the word to all of your acquaintances. Post this logo/info. on social media. Feel free to share this in upcoming GALA newsletters through January.
We are pleased to offer our donations to SVCM and Owen Middle in January!
Please drop off all PB&J donations at the GAL office:
31 College Place, 204D
Asheville, NC 28801
We are here Mondays-Fridays and closed for lunch from 12:30-1pm.
If you have a large donation, you can call Dianna Ryel-Lindsey, GAL Program Specialist, to coordinate a pick-up:
#828-259-6603
Also, please contact our office if you are interested in making this project a success, have ideas, any brainstorming around this campaign- we are open to your creativity!
THANK YOU, dear GALs, we appreciate all that you do!
Happy holidays!
