ENTRY PERIOD: Now – February 6th. Entries submitted before or after the Entry Period will not be eligible.

WHAT TO ENTER: Blue Ridge Humane Society is committed to reducing the overpopulation of companion animals and to improve their quality of life through adoption, collaboration, and community education. For our “You Can’t Buy Love But You Can Rescue It” Photo Contest, we’d like for you to submit a photo of your rescue pet. Show us what a homeless pet’s second chance at a happily-ever-after looks like!

HOW TO ENTER: All images must be submitted following the steps on the registration form on the Blue Ridge Humane Society website. We kindly ask for a $15 donation per each photo entry. 100% of each donation will go directly to the care and services for the animals at our shelter. You may enter as many photos as you would like.

JUDGING: Photos will be judged by a panel of local community members. BRHS will notify the winners by February 11, 2022. An awards reception will be held on Thursday, February 17th at Dry Falls Brewing with the top three overall and 10 runner up photos on display.

WINNERS: All winning photos will be on display at Dry Falls Brewing starting February 17th. Prizes will be awarded for the top three with display at Dry Falls and online, with the 10 honorable mentions also on display at Dry Falls at the contest reception.

Your safety and limiting the spread of COVID-19 is everyone’s main priority. We encourage you to review and adhere to the recommendations on the Buncombe County readiness site on how best to avoid COVID-19 and what to do if you think you might have it.


 Asheville-Buncombe Technical Community College (A-B Tech) is a comprehensive two-year college and one of 58 colleges in the North Carolina Community College System, serving students in five locations in Buncombe and Madison Counties.  A-B Tech, through its dedication to student success, strives toward its mission to deliver quality education to enhance academic, workforce, and personal development. A-B Tech envisions changing lives and strengthening communities. 

We are currently seeking registered Therapy Dog Teams to have regular routes on campus, visiting public areas, classrooms and staff offices. Our A-B Tech Therapy Dog program aims to spread compassion, empathy, and, most importantly, “pawsitivity” across our campus.  A-B Tech Community College recognizes the positive influence that therapy dogs can have on student and staff.

Volunteer Responsibilities:

  • Therapy dog teams (owner and dog) will visit public areas on campus, classrooms, and staff offices
  • Therapy dog teams will also assist with special requests such as visiting classrooms before exams, counseling sessions or special events on campus.

Time Commitment:

  • 1 hour once a week
  • Therapy Dog teams are scheduled to ensure they are not in the same building or area at the same time as other teams.

Requirements:

  • Must be 21 years old
  • Complete volunteer application with A-B Tech
  • Complete FERPA & HIPAA forms
  • Submit to a criminal background screening
  • Attend an in-person interview and orientation with A-B Tech Campus Volunteer Coordinator
  • Provide copies of Therapy Dog Certification (Dog Teams must be certified by an accredited Therapy Dog Agency before starting).

*As of 2021, the Volunteer Program accepts Therapy Dog certification from the following agencies, Alliance of Therapy Dogs, Therapy Dogs International, Pet Partners (previously Delta Society).

17th Annual Groundhog Day Celebration

Join Chimney Rock’s naturalist and our favorite NC rodent to find out if spring is coming early or if we have six more weeks of winter. This fun event includes our resident groundhog seeking his shadow, animal demonstrations with a few of his ambassador friends and critter crafts.

Cupid Crew: Valentine Making Event

We could all use a little TLC this year. Cheer yourself up by spreading the love this Valentine’s Day. Join NC card-making artist Margaret Cogswell for a virtual valentine-making event. Participants will be guided through a basic card-making technique that can be used for all kinds of cards. Participants will also learn more about the “cupid crew,” a group who makes sure a card you create gets to people in long-term care who really need a pick-me-up. We look forward to creating and spreading the love with you!

If you choose to make cards with us, you will need the following supplies:

  • heavy card stock- 81/2” x 11”, Valentine colors- solids and/or patterned- 8-12 sheets
  • glue stick
  • decorative paper with Valentine colors and patterns
  • scissors
  • scrap sheets of paper to use as a gluing surface and to make templates
  • ruler
  • pencil and eraser
  • red, black and white gel pen
  • envelopes for your cards- example: 4 3/8” x 5 3/4” or 5 1/4” x 7 1/4”
  • Optional- heart shaped paper punches

Free Pet Food Giveaway

BRHS Warehouse,
Blue Ridge Humane is hosting a free pet food giveaway at the BRHS Warehouse at 802 S Grove St, on Monday, February 7, 3pm-5:30pm. Supplies will be given out while they last, first come, first serve. Social distancing and protective measures will be taken by all staff and we ask the public to follow CDC recommendations.
Food will be distributed car-side, so all you need to do is pull up and we’ll direct you from there! Staff will get your info (zipcode, number and type of pet), and place the food in your car trunk.
Even if you don’t need free pet food please share so those that might need supplies can come!

  • Therapy dog teams (owner and dog) will visit public areas on campus, classrooms, and staff offices
  • Therapy dog teams will also assist with special requests such as visiting classrooms before exams, counseling sessions or special events on campus.

Time Commitment:

  • 1 hour once a week
  • Therapy Dog teams are scheduled to ensure they are not in the same building or area at the same time as other teams.

Requirements:

  • Must be 21 years old
  • Complete volunteer application with A-B Tech
  • Complete FERPA & HIPAA forms
  • Submit to a criminal background screening
  • Attend an in-person interview and orientation with A-B Tech Campus Volunteer Coordinator
  • Provide copies of Therapy Dog Certification (Dog Teams must be certified by an accredited Therapy Dog Agency before starting).

*As of 2021, the Volunteer Program accepts Therapy Dog certification from the following agencies, Alliance of Therapy Dogs, Therapy Dogs International, Pet Partners (previously Delta Society).

Go On A Blind Date With a Book at the Library This February

Buncombe County Public Libraries is playing matchmaker in February as Blind Date with a Book returns. The blind date books are easy to spot; they’ll be the ones with the paper-wrapped book covers. Check one out and take it home. Remember, don’t judge a book by its cover, and you might fall in love with a new author, genre, or series you hadn’t tried before.

The Fairview, Swannanoa, Pack, Black Mountain, Leicester, and North Asheville Libraries will be happy to set you up on your blind date anytime in February.

 Asheville-Buncombe Technical Community College (A-B Tech) is a comprehensive two-year college and one of 58 colleges in the North Carolina Community College System, serving students in five locations in Buncombe and Madison Counties.  A-B Tech, through its dedication to student success, strives toward its mission to deliver quality education to enhance academic, workforce, and personal development. A-B Tech envisions changing lives and strengthening communities. 

We are currently seeking registered Therapy Dog Teams to have regular routes on campus, visiting public areas, classrooms and staff offices. Our A-B Tech Therapy Dog program aims to spread compassion, empathy, and, most importantly, “pawsitivity” across our campus.  A-B Tech Community College recognizes the positive influence that therapy dogs can have on student and staff.
