The Mantras
w/ Opposite Box
The Mantras, a five piece jam machine born of Greensboro, NC have been conquering crowds and melting minds all over the country progressively for over a decade. The band’s music can be described with all types of varying rock and roll terminology, but is absolutely best defined by each listener’s ear and, equally important, their experience.
Since the inception of The Mantras in the mid 2000’s, the band has been touring the country and building a catalog of 4 studio albums and over 100 original songs. Performing an entirely different set of music each night is an integral part of the band’s direction and mission as well as the ability to truly improvise in between orchestrated pieces. With eclectic influences of sounds from around the globe, The Mantras create a musical escapade during each performance, giving every ounce of emotion to their craft of expression and communication through music.
The Mantras are a family of rock; their closely-knit bonds can truly be felt by the crowd while the band performs. This is a critical feature of their community. One can easily tell that the musical pockets created by radical guitar riffs, gut checked bass lines, screeching synthesizers, a complete projection light show and two symbiotic drummers are no accident. The musical conversation on stage is simply beautiful to watch. The feeling is not exclusive just to the members on stage, however. The Mantras’ loyal fan base can testify to the reciprocation of love between performer and attendee and in a scene where it is sometimes difficult to stabilize a fan base and a consistent identity, The Mantras do just that. It has all of the ebbs and flows, peaks and valleys and patterns of constriction and release that can hook someone for life. Each show is a story. Each story is unique.
In addition to the collaborative element between band and fans, The Mantras have shared the stage with some of the foremost titans of jam. Their most recent studio release, entitled Jam Bands Ruined My Life was recorded at Umphrey’s McGee, axe man Jake Cinninger’s home studio, where Jake is featured on two tracks. Shortly after recording, The Mantras opened for and shared the stage with Umphrey’s McGee members while performing the thumping single entitled, “Kinetic Bump.” In addition, The Mantras have collaborated with members of The String Cheese Incident, Tea Leaf Green, and Perpetual Groove among many others. The year 2013 saw The Mantras play over 180 shows, culminating in their annual Mantrabash music and arts festival, held in the beautiful backcountry of Ferguson, NC.
Mantrabash stands as a testament to the loyalty of the fan base and the engagement of The Mantras within their local, regional, and national music communities. Attended by thousands, Mantrabash has become the landing spot for live music fans from all over the country to enjoy the hard work and dedication of The Mantras in addition to the other stellar musicians who appear over the 3 days.

The Collider invites you to our second annual climate data hackathon, held on March 31st, 2019. CCx: Hack is part of Climate City Expo, a 10-day celebration of Asheville’s creativity and commitment to climate change awareness and action.
Join us at CCx: Hack, The Collider’s second climate data hackathon!
The Collider is partnering with Global Parametrics, global experts in natural disaster risk mitigation and financial resilience in emerging economies! Global Parametrics has a global risk hazard platform that is used to develop analytics and risk transfer products for their clients. Among other data and models, this platform integrates general circulation models, such as the Climate Forecast System (CFS2) data.
>>Challenge<<
Develop an algorithm that considers all vulnerable populated places in the world (above a minimum population threshold) and identifies when an extreme temperature event is occurring or emerging based on short-term forecasts (1-2 weeks).
>>Outcome<<
Using the algorithm developed during the hackathon, there is a potential end product online map or analytical tool that Global Parametrics could maintain and link to from their website. This would allow anyone to see in the world where extreme temperature events might be impacting vulnerable populations.
>>Who Should Attend?<<
Data scientists, statisticians, climatologists, programmers, web developers, systems thinkers, and problem solvers! All abilities welcome.

What is a Clean Up Day? How do you participate? Is this a family-friendly event? How long is the clean up? What is for breakfast? Should you bring anything? What happens at the end?
Read on for answers to these questions below.
What is a Haywood Road Clean Up Day?
A morning where volunteers work to pick up trash and recycling along the Haywood Road corridor with the support of Asheville GreenWorks. We alternate between the east end and west end of the road. (Clean Up Days this year are on March 31, June 1, September 7, and November 2, 2019.)
How do you participate?
1-RSVP, especially if you are bringing multiple people with you
2-Show up at 10am at Zia Taqueria
3-Eat some breakfast
4-Gear up with gloves, safety vest, bags, and tools
5-Head out to pick up trash and recycling along the corridor and side streets
6-Finish at New Belgium Brewing to return gloves, vests, tools and pick up your ice cream coupon or free beer (21 and up)!
Is this a family-friendly event?
Yes, although not recommended for very small children. Haywood Road is a busy street and it is important that you and your children stay alert and safe throughout the clean up. An adult signature on the Asheville GreenWorks waiver form is required.
How long is the clean up?
Generally volunteers are out about 1.5 hours, so you should expect to finish up about noon.
What is for breakfast?
Zia Taqueria, Sunny Point Café, and Biscuit Head are donating delicious breakfast items for volunteers including scrambled eggs, potatoes, breakfast meats and veggie options, biscuits, juice, and coffee. WABA will also be proving fresh fruit.
Should you bring anything?
Asheville GreenWorks will supply gloves (adult size), safety vests, and trash bags for everyone. They’ll also have a limited supply of tools. Madden’s Ace Hardware has donated 10 trash grabbers to WABA, so those along with some brooms will be available.
If you have your own grabber, a flat-headed shovel, or industrial broom, we recommend you bring it.
What happens at the end?
Finish up at New Belgium Brewing and return items you borrowed from Asheville GreenWorks, or WABA to receive a coupon good for a scoop of ice cream at The Hop West or a beer (21 and up)!
We look forward to seeing you! Remember to RSVP by clicking through on the ticket link.
Your support of the businesses that support these clean up days is greatly appreciated.

Jai Dev Singh returns to Asheville on the last weekend in March for two powerful and transformative Kundalini Yoga experiences. This is the perfect way to shift into the Spring right after the equinox.
WORKSHOP 1: SATURDAY MARCH 30, 2019
Joy of the Infinite: A Kundalini Yoga Workshop
Taught by Jai Dev Singh
When you lift the life force in the body so that it nurtures the higher glands, you can unlock a wellspring of energy that under normal circumstances remains unavailable. It is an alchemy which causes the mind to look through the lens of heightened awareness. From this high-altitude vantage point, you fall deeply in love with who you truly are. This is the infinite well in which true confidence and beauty are born. A glow beams from the eyes, brightness emanates through the presence, and a divine warmth emerges in the heart.
In this unique workshop, we will use high-powered exercises and incredible meditations to activate our life force and enjoy the experience of an enlivened body, a crystal clear mind and an awakened soul!
WORKSHOP 2: SUNDAY MARCH 31, 2019
Becoming Crystal Clear: A Kundalini Yoga Experience
Taught by Jai Dev Singh
There is a supreme intelligence that permeates all things and a life force that interpenetrates every atom of the universe. It is a supreme love which desires to express itself yet needs a vehicle through which to do so. You are that vehicle!
When this life-force intelligence is obstructed, distorted or cloaked, we lose our sense of purpose, become lackluster and foggy. But, when the life-force moves and the higher centers of the psyche are activated, we are happy, prosperous, attractive and crystal clear.
In this special workshop, we will use transporting yogic exercises and meditations of Kundalini Yoga to activate the body’s life force intelligence and plug into our source of spiritual electricity.
*Saturday and Sunday sessions can also be purchased individually

Neuroscientists have discovered places in the brain where the mind goes to “rest” when not engaged in tasks. Called the Default Mode Network (DMN), one might assume that that part of the brain also “rests” when we aren’t active. However counter-intuitive it may seem, the DMN network actually becomes active when we aren’t involved in tasks. It is where we ruminate, mind wander, project into the future and reimagine that past, project ourselves onto others as if we knew what was on their minds, among other less than conscious habits. This is the stuff that takes place in the background.
It is hypothesized that the DMN is where we locate the “self.” An overactive DMN is seen among persons with acute anxiety, depression, and other pathologies. It is where we seem to agonize our various distresses. We often say that the “self” exists in “thoughts” about ourselves. This isn’t not accurate. To locate who we think we are we have to go below the level of consciousness. And there calm an overactive DMN so that we can find peace and serenity. Neuroscientists say that activities such as meditation are excellent vehicles to tame the excesses of the DMN. It is by access to the DMN that we tame our excessive and debilitating ego. But not all meditations are created equal. There are specific modes of quiescent meditation that access the DMN better than others.
The purpose of this workshop is to educate participants about the brain, sufficient to understand what the DMN is and how it works. We will touch on the latest neuroscience of meditation. And from there we shall engage in various meditation practices aimed at taming the DMN. Participants should leave the workshop with an understanding of their own mind-brains and with important tools that will contribute to their tranquility and well being.
