Feb 2 @ 10:00 am – 5:00 pm
Ten Thousand Villages Montreat

We are aiming to collect 80 sets of metal or durable bamboo small spoons and forks through the month of February. Please bring washed used or new silverware to our store and enjoy our thanks and a browse and a cup of fair trade coffee.

Feb 2 @ 10:00 am – 2:00 pm
Foothills Equestrian Nature Center (FENCE)

Talented needle felting artist, Irene Heckel will teach a Needle Felted painting class at FENCE on Saturday, February, 2nd from 10am-2pm. This needle felted painting class involves using fibers to create a “painting” of a pet photo pre-selected by the student. The students will start with a prefelt background and then use fibers to create colors by overlaying and blending colors to get shades. Each student will create their own “painting” to take home at the end of the class. The fee for this class is $60. This price includes all supplies. Irene will assist students throughout the class with their artwork.

Students must provide a photo (headshot only) of the animal they wish to use for their needle felted painting to ensure that the appropriate colored fibers are available. Photos of Cats, Dogs, or Horses are prefered. Photos can be provided via email or dropped off at FENCE and should be size 8”x10” if possible to ensure the best detail. Space for this class is limited and pre-registration is required. To register for the class please call FENCE at 828-859-9021 or email [email protected].

Paddle-n-Plant workday
Feb 2 @ 10:00 am – 4:00 pm
MountainTrue

Sign up here: https://secure.everyaction.com/fOwmN5yNIE6kycwY-We9Zg2

The French Broad Riverkeeper and MountainTrue are combating sediment erosion in our local waterways. Sediment is a major polluter in our river basin, clogging fish and aquatic habitats, increasing water temperatures, and transporting toxic substances. We are helping to reduce the amount of sediment that flows into our rivers by planting live-stakes along eroding riverbanks. These stakes will grow into trees that will stabilize the sides of the rivers and creeks where we plant them, and will reduce the overall amount of sediment getting into the river. So, come hop in a boat and help us reduce erosion along our local rivers!

Haywood Waterways is a nonprofit watershed organization based in Haywood County, NC. Our mission is to reduce nonpoint source pollution and improve surface water quality throughout the Pigeon River Watershed. We accomplish this through education and focusing attention on the watershed as a natural, economic and recreational resource to be conserved and enhanced for this and future generations.

We offer a variety of educational opportunities but our premier event, Kids in the Creek, is consistently one of the most memorable experiences students have from middle school. Kids in the Creek is a hands-on learning experience that gets students in the Pigeon River, flipping over rocks and learning about the river’s incredible water quality. We’ve reached 14,000 students in the event’s 21-year history, and the teachers love it and say it helps with End of Grade testing: “Kids in the Creek does more to increase students understanding of water and water quality than anything I could do in the classroom. It has been a valuable learning tool for many years and something the students and I look forward to every year.”
