Pianoforte with Koeun Grace Lee
Nov 11 @ 3:00 pm – 5:00 pm
Unitarian Universalist Congregation of Asheville

PERFORMANCES
Music, dance, performance art, and other live performances bring artworks in our collection and special exhibitions to life. Performances include discussion of the intersections between art forms.

Pianoforte with Koeun Grace Lee
NOVEMBER 11, 2018 — Sunday, 3pm
Museum and UUCA Members: $8 + tax ($7 children)
Non-members: $16 + tax ($15 children)
Meet at Unitarian Universalist Congregation of Asheville (1 Edwin Place, Asheville 28801)

Koeun Grace Lee performs a program entitled “The Multilingual Piano,” blending the Western classical piano music tradition and her Korean identity through works by Ludwig van Beethoven, Robert Schumann, Nikolai Kapustin, David Burge, and Isang Yun. Traditional sonata forms appear in Beethoven’s Piano Sonata, op. 90 and Schumann’s Toccata, op. 7. The opening theme of Igor Stravinsky’s Rite of Spring is quoted in a harmonious combination between jazz elements and Russian Romanticism in Kapustin’s Variations, op. 41. Korean traditional music and culture arise through the prism of Western contemporary techniques in Burge’s Go-Hyang. The twelve-tone technique of the Second Viennese School and aspects of Korean traditional music merit attention in Yun’s Five Pieces for Piano. In this program, Lee highlights the cultural versatility that the piano offers.

A South Korean native, Lee returns to Pianoforte for our 10th-anniversary season. She is an avid performer, educator, and conference lecturer across the U.S. She holds a doctorate of music in piano performance and a postgraduate certificate in music theory pedagogy from UNC Greensboro, a graduate degree in piano performance from the University of Missouri-Kansas City Conservatory of Music, and an undergraduate degree in piano performance and pedagogy and an artist diploma from the University of Tennessee-Knoxville. She has performed in master classes of internationally renowned pianists Kevin Kenner, Boaz Sharon, William Westney, Simone Dinnerstein, Jacques Després, Pascal Rogé, Jeremy Denk, Dror Biran, Joel Hastings, André Watts, and Byron Janis.

Lee has presented numerous lecture-performances at conferences of the College Music Society in the U.S. and South Korea. She has been a featured performer and lecturer at the Composition in Asia International Symposium & Festival, and guest artist at the University of South Florida-Tampa and many other venues. She will be recording The Songs of Florida Composers in 2019. She is on the piano faculty at Brevard College, Mars Hill University, and the Academy for the Arts at First Baptist Church of Asheville, and also serves as music director at Oakley United Methodist Church. She is an active member of Asheville Area Piano Forum, Music Teachers National Association, College Music Society, and Suzuki Association of the Americas.

We Are Here: A trans storytelling event #WontBeErased
Nov 11 @ 4:00 pm – 7:00 pm
GUUF

Recently the New York Times published a piece that states that the Trump administration is considering narrowly defining gender as a biological, immutable condition determined by genitalia at birth.

This is the most drastic move yet in a governmentwide effort to roll back recognition and protections of transgender people under federal civil rights law, but through all this we have one simple message – WE WILL NOT BE ERASED.

Trans people have existed as long as people have existed, and no memo, or executive order will change that. We are strong. We are resilient. And we will not be silenced.

EVENT SCHEDULE
4:00 – 5:00 free legal name change clinic and one on one consultations with SC attorney’s to answer questions about gender marker changes

5:00 – 6:00 Current legal landscape framing, and local trans community leaders share our stories

6:00 – 7:00 All are invited to join us for a free meal and chance to connect with likeminded community members. Vegan, GF options will be available

Come join Upstate Gender Benders, Columbia Gender Benders, Tri-County Gender Benders, Campaign for Southern Equality, PFLAG Spartanburg, Upstate Pride, The Greenville Sisters, the Rainbow Support Group, Speaking Down Barriers, Pride Link, and a growing list of local partners at the Greenville UU from 4-7 on Sunday November 11th. We will hear from local community leaders from 5-6, and then we invite everyone to join us for a free meal and chance to fellowship with likeminded community members. Live music will be preformed by amazing local artist K. Harper.

To our trans family, please know that you are not alone.

Creating Art Works! Expressive Arts Series: Connection
Nov 11 @ 5:00 pm – 6:00 pm
Studio Zahiya

Facilitated by Taisir El-Souessi, LPC, REAT

Many people feel disconnected from their bodies. Maybe we simply don’t take the time. Maybe we’re too wrapped up in our heads. Maybe we feel shameful or betrayed.

However, our mind, spirit, and soul are all part of our body. It’s not simply a vehicle we ride around in. The story of everything we are and could be is held there.

In this 8-week series, we will use talking, movement, imagery and journaling to explore and facilitate improved expression, awareness, growth, healing and connection with ourselves as well as others on this journey.

Space is limited. Participants will need their own 11×14 sketchbook and to wear comfortable clothing for sitting and movement. Feel free to bring a pillow for sitting on the floor. Other materials will be provided. Please email Taisir with any additional questions. [email protected]
