Black History & Conservation Bicycle Ride
Apr 7 @ 10:00 am – 2:00 pm
Southern Appalachian Highlands Conservancy

This event is free but registrations is required – complete registration at: https://appalachian.org/event/black-history-and-conservation-bicycle-ride/

Join us and special guest Daniel White “The Blackalachian” on a special countryside bicycle ride exploring farmland conservation and rural black history. This loop rolls over gentle hills through the Alexander/Leicester area with views of open farmland valleys and breathtaking vistas of the Blue Ridge Mountains.

The ride will begin at the SAHC Community Farm and then proceed to the historic Alexander Chapel Baptist Church, site of an historic African American church and cemetery. At this stop, riders will be joined by Annette Coleman, whose family was from this area. Annette will share information about the history of the church and preservation efforts to care for the site. Annette is one of the members of ASCORE – the Asheville Student Committee on Racial Equity – which desegregated public spaces in Asheville in the 1960s.

The ride will then continue to another stop to learn about one of SAHC’s recent farmland conservation projects in the area. On the last leg of the ride, participants will be able to see bison and camels in the surrounding fields of a neighboring farm. We will end by looping back to the SAHC Community Farm.

This ride is FREE and open to the public, but some road cycling experience and proper safety equipment is required. There is limited space available, so please register in advance.

Held in conjunction with our “It’s Your Backyard: On the Doorstep of Paradise” event on Saturday, April 6, this outing is supported by the Conservation Trust for North Carolina, and is made possible with funding from the Z. Smith Reynolds Foundation. CTNC, in partnership with local land trusts, seeks to build deeper connections with communities to ensure all North Carolinians enjoy the benefits provided by land and water conservation.

This event is part of WNC for the Planet! Western North Carolina is celebrating Earth Day throughout the entire month of April by coming together to act locally and think globally. This year, local community and environmental groups are teaming up to offer a myriad of service days, workshops and educational events and celebrations. #WNCfortheplanet

Volunteer Orientation
Apr 7 @ 11:00 am – 1:00 pm
Firestorm Books & Coffee

As a social movement space our hope is that volunteers can help us tell our story, develop our vision, and strengthen relationships within our community. Volunteers play a vital role in bringing the mission of our project to fruition.

Individuals interested in volunteering should attend an orientation (check our calendar for upcoming dates), at which we will introduce our project, including our Space Use Statement and Sober Space Statement. Once oriented, volunteers can sign up for a variety of roles based on their skills and passions.

Firestorm has space for volunteers who are committed but flexible. Ideally, volunteers would be available at least once a month. Examples of volunteer work might include—but are not limited to—supporting grassroots programming, connecting visitors with local resources, developing or maintaining the space, flyering for community events, or reading and reviewing new books.

Because the equitable compensation of labor is part of our mission, volunteers can support Firestorm as a social movement space but will not be asked, or permitted, to act as unpaid bookstore employees.

Seeing in the Dark ~ Special Afternoon Third Wave
Apr 7 @ 2:00 pm – 4:30 pm
Asheville Movement Collective

For the first time at AMC, we are offering a wave that is both non-verbal and non-visual. By blocking our visual input during movement, we can deepen the experience and make it more internal. Forgetting about others in the room, we reduce self-consciousness and become more responsive to the messages from our body. If you’re one of those who already wears a bandana during dance, here’s a chance to do so with the support of facilitators protecting the safety of the space.

After the wave, we will have some extra time to process the experiences that arose.

Facilitator: Ted Riskin

We welcome ages 15 and up.

Warm up begins at 2:00 pm. Opening circle begins at 2:30 pm. We should finish around 4:30 pm.

Suggested entry: $15
Flex Ticket: $12 – 20
Plus, we have some tickets available on a “pay what you can afford” basis.

To maintain safety, we are limiting attendance to 40 dancers for this event and requiring pre-registration to guarantee a place. It looks like there will be room for those who just show up, but we may have to turn people away if we reach our maximum.

To guarantee your spot, tickets will be available after most waves and online at https://www.brownpapertickets.com/event/4193559

New dancers will receive a voucher for a free second dance.
Sorry, but we are unable to provide childcare for this event.
