Transition Asheville’s May Gathering
May 20 @ 6:30 pm – 8:00 pm
Fellowship Hall, St. Mary's Episcopal Church

Presentation Topic: Zev Friedman: Permaculturist, Founder & Creative Director of Co-operative WNC – Regional Mutual Aid for a Regenerative Future

Description:  Zev Friedman says, “Co-operate WNC’s mission is to be a regional mutual aid initiative that uses co-operative economic tools to support a network of physical community centers which provide human services and act as organizing hubs for climate resilience.”

He believes, “This kind of work is a major missing ingredient in much of the transition movement: a formalized co-operative funding community that withdraws our financial support from the mainstream banking system and instead pools it at a large enough scale to support major transformational ecological and social projects.  Overall, this is an organizing strategy for regional scale permaculture.”

The new initiative, just launched in February of this year, was featured in the April 28th edition of the Mt. Express https://mountainx.com/news/co-operate-wnc-promotes-regional-resilience/ The article is a good read and explains in detail what the group says on its Facebook page: “Collaboration around a credit union and healthcare co-op to take care of people, take back our political system and grow a healthy regional human ecology.” https://www.facebook.com/Gadugi13/

Come meet Zev and learn more about this exciting organization that is has unique solutions to our 21st Century challenges.

Dressing for the Occasion: a New Temporary Exhibit
May 21 @ 9:00 am – May 22 @ 5:00 am
Carl Sandburg Home National Historic Site

A new temporary exhibit titled “Dressing for the Occasion: Mid-Century Sandburg as Celebrity and Family Man” opens on May 13, 2019. The exhibit, which runs through October, is part of the Sandburg Home tour and features clothing and accessories from both the park’s permanent collection and loaned items from the Sandburg family.

“Dressing for the Occasion” offers visitors a window into the style, culture, and feel of mid-century America. The family’s clothing and accessories weave together the roles of Carl Sandburg as a prominent writer, celebrity, father, and husband. This temporary exhibit offers an exciting opportunity for the public to view objects that are normally in storage or in the possession of Sandburg family members. Tours of the Sandburg Home are offered daily from 9:30 am to 4:30 pm. Tickets are available first come, first served, each day from the visitor information area in the ground level of the Sandburg Home.

Nearly every room in the historically furnished house museum will be included in the exhibit. Visitors will see the characteristic scarves Carl Sandburg wore as he played his guitar and sang folk songs to entertain his family and guests, the dress Lilian Sandburg wore to meet President Lyndon B. Johnson, and many other mid-century pieces worn by the Sandburgs and their daughters. Historic photographs, paired with the clothing, will provide context.
