Thad Cockrell
w/ Aaron Burdett
The Grey Eagle
Asheville, NC

Tickets: $17adv / $20dos

American singer-songwriter Thad Cockrell (also lead singer of LEAGUES) lives out the idea of “dream outside your means” and in turn inspires his audience to do the same through thoughtful interpretation of relatable circumstance. Cockrell naturally displays himself within each of his musical masterpieces, connecting listeners and providing an outlet for self-understanding.

“I truly believe that the song is just the tool given to create the connection, and through connection we all slowly but surely become a little more seen, a little bit more understood
and a little less alone.”

Dressing for the Occasion: a New Temporary Exhibit
May 24 @ 9:00 am – May 25 @ 5:00 am
Carl Sandburg Home National Historic Site

A new temporary exhibit titled “Dressing for the Occasion: Mid-Century Sandburg as Celebrity and Family Man” opens on May 13, 2019. The exhibit, which runs through October, is part of the Sandburg Home tour and features clothing and accessories from both the park’s permanent collection and loaned items from the Sandburg family.

“Dressing for the Occasion” offers visitors a window into the style, culture, and feel of mid-century America. The family’s clothing and accessories weave together the roles of Carl Sandburg as a prominent writer, celebrity, father, and husband. This temporary exhibit offers an exciting opportunity for the public to view objects that are normally in storage or in the possession of Sandburg family members. Tours of the Sandburg Home are offered daily from 9:30 am to 4:30 pm. Tickets are available first come, first served, each day from the visitor information area in the ground level of the Sandburg Home.

Nearly every room in the historically furnished house museum will be included in the exhibit. Visitors will see the characteristic scarves Carl Sandburg wore as he played his guitar and sang folk songs to entertain his family and guests, the dress Lilian Sandburg wore to meet President Lyndon B. Johnson, and many other mid-century pieces worn by the Sandburgs and their daughters. Historic photographs, paired with the clothing, will provide context.

Visitors can see the installation at the Sandburg Home when they visit. Young artists are represented from across the country and locally, including students from Sugarloaf Elementary School in Hendersonville, NC.

Deep River

After hearing Deep River sing one of their own compositions, ‘Remember Always’, live on the Bell Buckle (Tennessee) Jamboree Radio Show, local resident Charlie Louvin of Louvin Brothers fame told the country vocal group, “I’d like to hear y’all play that song on the Opry.” Although they haven’t yet had that opportunity, Deep River has sung with Country Music Hall of Famer Vince Gill, as well as opened for country star Mark Wills and the ‘Mother of Bluegrass’, Wilma Lee Cooper.

Founding members Sandy Howard and Sharon Lewis have been performing together since April 1993 in Nashville, Tennessee, and the current line-up made it’s Asheville, North Carolina debut in August, 2007.

While in Nashville, Sandy and Sharon recorded three CDs, wrote or co-wrote eight songs, two of which, ‘Civil War’ and ‘Silver Eagle’, received ‘honorable mention’ from Music Row magazine’s Robert K. Oermann, and one of those, ‘Silver Eagle’, received a little radio airplay on small market country stations around the US. More recently, ‘Civil War’ has been played by Asheville’s KISS Country 99 FM.

The name ‘Deep River’ conjures up thoughts about the natural circle of life, and that’s exactly how one might describe their music—stories of love and loss told in the context of family-style harmonies and danceable rhythms.
