Reclaimed Creations is a unique sculpture exhibit created by renowned artist Sayaka Ganz. Utilizing reclaimed plastic objects, such as discarded utensils, Ganz creates amazing sculptures that visually appear unified at a distance, but are in fact separated when examined up close. Described as using a “3D impressionistic” style, Ganz’s exhibit includes installations of animals in motion, which are in rich in color and energy, to create an illusion of form.
About the Artist
Born in Yokohama, Japan, Sayaka Ganz grew up living in Japan, Brazil and Hong Kong. She received her Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from Indiana University, Bloomington, and a Master of Fine Arts degree in sculpture from Bowling Green State University in Ohio. A lecturer and teacher, Ganz’s work has been displayed at various institutions around the globe, including the Hermann Geiger Foundation in Cecina, Italy, the Isle Gallery in Isle of Man, and the Monterey Bay Aquarium in California.
My work is about perceiving harmony, even in situations that appear chaotic from the inside. When observing my sculptures up close, one might see gaps, holes and items being held on only by small points; step away, however, and the sculptures reveal the harmony created when the objects are aligned to the same general (but not identical) direction. Similarly, it is important to gain perspective by stepping back from current problems and look at the larger picture. Then one can perceive the beauty and patterns that exist.”

Meet at the trailhead of the Catawba Falls Trail at the parking lot at the end of Catawba River Road in Old Fort.
Volunteers on foot are needed to help pick up any trash along the trail.
The Catawba Falls Trail is a well-graded 1.5-mile trail that leads to lower Catawba Falls. The trail gets somewhat rocky in the last quarter mile. The trail gets heavy use, so this cleanup will remove any trash accumulated along the trail.
Trash bags and some “trash grabbers” will be provided. Please wear close-toed shoes and bring gloves and water.
This event is sponsored by the McDowell Trails Association in cooperation with The U.S. Forest Service and Keep McDowell Beautiful.
Please pre-register for the cleanup so we know how many to expect. You do not need to be an MTA member to volunteer.
Email [email protected] with your name and if applicable, the names of others in your group. We will confirm with an email and send a reminder before the event.
Thank you for volunteering with this cleanup. U.S. Forest Service regulations require volunteers to register at the event and sign a waiver.

Join Southern Appalachian Highlands Conservancy for an adventurous hike around the outer rim of the Montreat Wilderness. This hike (rated 13 for difficulty) is to celebrate SAHC’s recent acquisition of one of the Seven Sisters of the Montreat Wilderness, Brushy Knob. Brushy Knob, also known as “Big Piney,” is the third Sister in the chain of summits straddling the Asheville watershed and Montreat. This 123 acre preserve encompasses forested slopes, rock outrcoppings, and the summit of Brushy Knob itself (over 4160 ft. elevation). Our acquisition of this land protects important biological and ecological areas, including a portion of the Audubon Society’s Black and Great Craggy Mountain Important Bird Area.
This hike will begin up the famous Graybeard Trail traveling via switchbacks from the old Mt Mitchell narrow-gauge railroad bed from the 1920’s. On this path we will pass through beautiful forest, Pleistocene boulder fields, and Graybeard Falls. We will then proceed to Walker’s Knob, a rocky outcrop with sprawling views of Montreat and Black Mountain. The hike will then continue on the Graybeard Trail to its summit at 5,408′ above sea level where we will have lunch.
We will then begin our descent down the West Ridge Trail along the Seven Sisters. To the west of this rugged, scenic trail is the protected Asheville Watershed and SAHC’s newest acquisition, Brushy Knob. We will then turn onto the Big Piney Trail, enjoying one more spectacular rocky outcrop before descending to the Little Piney Trail and exiting the trail system. Be sure to bring durable hiking boots, snacks, water, and lunch for this long, beautiful, strenuous, unforgettable hike.
Hike difficulty ratings are based on this formula: (0.002 x elevation gain (ft.)) + round trip distance (mi.) = difficulty rating (1 – 10+)
*** REGISTRATION IS REQUIRED TO ATTEND – FREE for SAHC members, $10 for non-members – REGISTER AT: https://appalachian.org/event/montreat-wilderness-hike-2018/ ***

Richmond Hill is Asheville’s only forested park, however, several acres of this unique urban ecosystem are overrun by non-native invasive plants. These invasives pose a threat to our native plant species by crowding out their habitat. Many of these species have the ability to grow at an alarming rate and, if left unchecked, could overgrow the walking and biking paths in Richmond Hill Park. Please join us as we take Richmond Hill Park back and restore native plants, making it a safer and more beautiful place to walk and bike! Be sure to wear long sleeves and pants as well as closed-toe shoes to this event. We will provide all other equipment necessary!

Sonic Retreat Workshop (part of the photo+sphere festival)
FREE
Organized by Colby Caldwell
SIGN UP: http://www.revolveavl.org/sonic-retreat
The use of “found sounds” has a long history in music. Grounded in ideas developed by twentieth-century avant-garde composers such as John Cage (who had a vital connection to Black Mountain College), found sounds are used today in a wide range of musical modes. In this free workshop, participants will explore the mountains, rivers, and forests that surround Asheville, capturing found sounds with field-recording equipment and keeping a written and photographic journal of their discoveries. The workshop is open to all levels of experience.
Friday, November 9
2:30PM—Participants will gather at REVOLVE to meet workshop leaders Kima Moore, and Jess Speer. These sound artists will share experiences collecting sounds and developing practices to generate compositions, and will discuss how sound, environment, and the natural world offer new possibilities for composition.
Saturday, November 10
9:00AM—The group will explore the Smoky Mountains, rivers, and forests gathering sounds, photographs and writings. After the field trip, participants will meet to discuss the potential uses of their findings.
Follow-up: In December 2018, a month after the workshop, the sounds collected by participants during the sonic retreat will be fashioned into an hour-long sonic “diary” that will be posted on REVOLVE’s Bandcamp for free download.
Workshop Leaders
Kimathi Moore, born in Paris and now based in Asheville, is an artist whose love for electronics and sound experimentations goes back to his childhood. Kima spends much of his time making field recordings and visiting abandoned railroads and buildings to gather found sounds.
Jess Speer is an Asheville-based artist whose work—which includes field recordings, paper-cut collage, performance, ’zines, and installations—touches on issues of ecology, community, history, mortality, and memory. Jess and her husband Peter perform under the name The Speers, primarily creating live improvisations with their library of LPs and modular synthesizers, locating hypnotic patterns in ordinary sounds., 2018

WHAT IS YOGA, REALLY?
Presenter: Leslie Morrill, E-RYT 500, IAYT Certified Yoga Therapist
In this gathering of the minds, we will bravely open Pandora’s Box, facing any fears about Yoga, bringing into the light of day possible doubts and conundrums over the philosophy and practice of Yoga.
Discussion includes:
Who started Yoga?
How long has it been around?
Do credible agencies regulate and recommend Yoga for authentic health benefits?
How are yoga teaching standards set?
Can I injure myself with Yoga? (How safe is it?)
Why is Yoga controversial among some religious groups and leaders?
How did it gain popularity in the U.S?
Why are there so many styles and how do I know which is right for me?
(And perhaps the trickiest) Discussion of why people view Yoga as a religion or as just an exercise practice…
