Deep Ecology Night Hike
Nov 17 @ 4:30 pm – 10:30 pm
Big Ivy

UPDATE: REGISTRATION CLOSED, AND OUR WAITLIST IS FULL. Please follow our main page “Deep Ecology Meditation” for information about other upcoming programs.

Join Deep Ecology Meditation for a beautiful group hike under the autumn moon and stars at Big Ivy.

There will be periods of silence, guided meditations, stargazing, and other contemplative offerings. This event is suitable for people with any level of experience of meditation or mindfulness practice. The hike itself is moderate, and involves some stream crossings. We will take it slowly as the intention is full presence to our magical surroundings. The program will be led by Kathryn Shanks and Sonia Marcus.

We will carpool from the Greenlife parking lot to Big Ivy. There will be an option to spend the night, so if you’d like to camp out, bring gear for that (sleeping bag, sleeping mat, etc.). Otherwise, all you will need is warm clothing, a water bottle, waterproof shoes, a flashlight (ideally a headlamp), and any snacks that you would like either during or after the program.

Suggested contribution: $20/person

Facilitators:

Kathryn Shanks has an extensive background in contemplative practices and outdoor leadership. She offers body-centered ecotherapy in private practice and is the founder of the Deep Ecology Meditation group. She has a Master’s Degree in Counseling with a specialization in Creative Expression, and is a Licensed Professional Counselor Associate. As a practitioner of Zen Buddhist mindfulness practice, a student of the School of Celtic Consciousness, a practitioner of Hakomi therapy, and a lover of the natural world, Kathryn is passionate about connecting people with the sacred in nature, in themselves, and in all things.

Sonia Marcus is a meditation teacher and board member for Southern Dharma Retreat Center near Hot Springs NC. In her time off from meditation, Sonia Marcus serves as UNC Asheville’s director of sustainability and as a member of UNCA’s Contemplative Pedagogy learning community. She is currently enrolled in the Awake in the Wild meditation teacher training program with Mark Coleman which focuses on nature and wilderness-based practice.

Guest Chef Johnny Curiel VIP 5 Course Dinner
Nov 17 @ 6:30 pm – 9:30 pm
Polanco Restaurant

This is a ticketed event with limited space available. Please pre-purchase tickets to reserve your space. We are thrilled to have Chef Johnny Curiel join us for an evening. He invites you to taste truly high end Mexican Cuisine.
This is his bio: I come from a proud family of chefs—my mom, dad, and sister are all executive chefs! From a young age, I knew that I would become a chef too, and I got my start at 14 washing dishes in my dad’s kitchen. At 18, I decided to travel across Mexico and learn as much as I could about the cooking traditions of each state. In three years I visited almost all of them, learning from everyone I could—from famous chefs in bustling restaurants to abuelas in their home kitchens. At 21, I joined Richard Sandoval’s team, cooking at restaurants and competitions across the USA and Mexico—DC, New York, Los Angeles, Guadalajara, Oaxaca, and Aspen—and then joined Troy Guard in Denver, working the Kitchens of Guard + Grace, Los Chingones, and Mr. Tuna. In 2017, I joined Big Red F family at Centro Mexican Kitchen in Boulder, CO as the Executive Chef. My goal is to introduce people to the many wonderful flavors of Mexico, and in that way share my culture with them. I love seeing the look on their faces when they taste something for the first time, or when a flavor brings them back to a place they’ve loved.

World Music Benefit Concert Featuring Village Marimba and Guests
Nov 17 @ 7:00 pm – 8:30 pm
Rainbow Community Auditorium

FUN FOR THE FAMILY!
Join us for a special benefit concert showcasing the various groups of students in Sue Ford’s Village Marimba School programs -both youth and adult- as they perform songs they have been learning, while giving back to the culture whose music has inspired and informed them. Suggested donation $5-$20 per person, collected at the door.

Proceeds from the concert will directly benefit Zimbabwean musician and teacher Barnabas Ngalande, who was one of Sue’s teachers, and provide funds to help pay the tuition for his gifted student, Spiwe Fulutuna of Zimbabwe, to continue her education at a high school that teaches music.

Barnabas Ngalande is a traditional native Zimbabwean musician and teacher, specializing in the mbira. He teaches in community schools in Zimbabwe and has been to the US a number of times as a guest teacher. Through his work in the schools, he has become the educational sponsor of three orphaned girls who play in his ensemble “Mbirauture” and he ensures they are able to continue their education, especially in music. The students in his ensemble travel throughout Zimbabwe to perform and compete, opening them up to opportunities that would not otherwise be within their reach.

An important component of Sue Ford’s music programs is fostering an appreciation for diverse styles of music from around the world coupled by an attitude of gratitude in action, that gives back to those sources of newly found inspiration. Music is a universal language. As global citizens, it is important that we remember to bring respect and kindness to the conversation. This benefit concert is an opportunity to exercise that principle.

Guest artists will include River Guerguerian and members of the Asheville Rhythm Ensemble on an array of world percussion instruments.

Nov 17 @ 7:30 pm – 9:00 pm
Asheville Community Theatre

Performed by students ages 13-17 in our Tanglewood Youth Theatre Production Class.

Geek. Poser. Jock. Beauty Queen. Wannabe. These are the labels that can last a lifetime. With an unforgettable rock score from Tony Award-winning composer, Jason Robert Brown, (Parade, The Last Five Years, Bridges of Madison County) 13 is a musical about fitting in – and standing out!

Evan Goldman is plucked from his fast-paced, preteen New York City life and plopped into a sleepy Indiana town following his parents divorce. Surrounded by an array of simpleminded middle school students, he needs to establish his place in the popularity pecking order. Can he situate himself on a comfortable link of the food chain… or will he dangle at the end with the outcasts?!?
