Adding a Southeast destination for designer toy makers and collectors, *Assembly Required brings designer, bootleg and art toy artists from around the country, to present and sell their work.
Asheville’s premiere designer toy expo, *Assembly Required, is presented by Unboxing Asheville, Morgan’s Comic’s, 103.3 Asheville FM and Appalachian Pinball Museum. Focusing on this artistic movement, designer toys are a form of lowbrow pop art. These toy makers pull inspiration from a variety of subversive segments of culture, as well as subcultural elements, including (but not limited to) comics, tattooing, street art, and everything related to toys of the 60’s through the 80’s.
Echoing production methods of traditional toy manufacturers, designer toys are usually intended to be displayed as collectibles, rather than to be played with. Toy makers mediums range from resin to vinyl, from plastic to plush; with molding, and production techniques such as kitbash, sofubi and bootleg (recently coined ‘Artisanal Action Figure’, by New York Times writer, Rich Juzwiak [11/23/18]). (https://www.nytimes.com/2018/11/23/style/bootleg-toys-action-figures.html).
Juzwiak interviews such artists as the Sucklord and Killer Bootlegs, both of whom will be present at *Assembly Required.

We are partnering with the Asheville Museum of Science for our most out of this world Hold My Juice Box event yet!
Explore the night sky with AMOS educators inside their largest inflatable planetarium! In this family friends investigation you will learn about the constellations, why stars are different colors, and even hear stories told by communities long ago.
Kids will interact with the phases of the moon through kinesthetic exploration, study the stars with constellation crafts, and experience the sun in a new way with AMOS’ solar viewer.
Due to the limited space of the inflatable planetarium, this will be a ticketed event with sessions beginning each half hour. Admission to each session is the $5 (inclusive of fees) for anyone ages 3 and up. Children 2 and under may come into the dome with a parent. Each session will be limited to 30 ticket holders at a time.

Please purchase your ticket from our webstore ahead of time, so that you can be sure to reserve a spot to view the wonders of the galaxy and beyond!

Join us for the next dancer’s gathering, to begin right after our Sunday Feb. 24th dances.
In addition to some more general community breakout groups, this Dancer’s Gathering we’ll be organizing around the research and legwork of developing the Nonprofit Business Plan for managing a community movement space that would serve as AMC’s Home!
Breakout Groups
–“Build a Home” Seed Fund Nonprofit Business Plan Development – Learn how to you can plugin to help us make as great a business plan as possible! This can be as simple as signing up for an email list, or putting yourself down for specific tasks! We’ll have a list of things we need done, as well as information about the overall business plan!
–Childcare – We’ll have community discussion about visions for AMC’s childcare program going forward! We’re excited about further improving it and would love the input of parents and community on the vision!
–AMC Governance & Participation – Would you like to get more involved in AMC’s general operations? Are you curious about how AMC’s community governance works?
–Diversity & Inclusivity – AMC envisions a world where all are able to express themselves authentically. The world we live in is not always that way! Many groups particularly poc (people of color) and LGBTQ+ folks are currently underrepresented at AMC, but AMC is committed to being a welcoming community and developing outreach to share our vision. This group is a first step in developing a cohesive plan for AMC to improve it’s inclusivity of and outreach to diverse communities.
–Is a breakout group missing? Would you like to host it? Get in touch via the website or our Facebook page to set it up for this dancer’s gathering :)
