The 2nd Act

Please join us at The 2nd Act in Hendersonville, NC for our first monthly book club meeting that strives to read books that create a closer knit and more inclusive community! We will meet virtually and in person monthly to discuss a book, so read the book and then join in the discussion in person or online every third Thursday. All are welcome! At the end of each meeting we will vote on the next book! The virtual club meeting will be in Zoom format and will meet 2.5 hours after the in-person meeting (8:00pm EST). After the meeting there is live acoustic music so stay and enjoy the vibe with your new friends! Put us down on your calendar for every third Third Thursday!

The first book is going to be called Disability Visibility.

Synopsis from the back cover: One in five people in the United States lives with a disability. Some disabilities are visible, others less apparent—but all are underrepresented in media and popular culture. Now, just in time for the thirtieth anniversary of the Americans with Disabilities Act, activist Alice Wong brings together this urgent, galvanizing collection of contemporary essays by disabled people.

From Harriet McBryde Johnson’s account of her debate with Peter Singer over her own personhood to original pieces by authors like Keah Brown and Haben Girma; from blog posts, manifestos, and eulogies to Congressional testimonies, and beyond: this anthology gives a glimpse into the rich complexity of the disabled experience, highlighting the passions, talents, and everyday lives of this community. It invites readers to question their own understandings. It celebrates and documents disability culture in the now. It looks to the future and the past with hope and love. Celebrating The Truth About Horses novel with Christy Cashman
Nov 25 @ 5:30 pm – 6:30 pm
Barnes and Noble Booksellers Biltmore Park

Join Barnes & Noble – 33 Town Square Blvd Suite 100, Asheville, NC on Saturday, November 25 at 5:30 PM ET, as we welcome author, actress and producer Christy Cashman for a signing and photo-op to celebrate the launch of her debut novel THE TRUTH ABOUT HORSES which is already a #1 new release.
“Christy Cashman has written a beautiful, thrilling tale about a teenage girl’s journey from fear to courage, from anger to forgiveness, from broken-heartedness to openness. The Truth about Horses is so much about the mysterious forces, within us and around us, that are always there to guide us, and the way in which people enter our lives exactly when we need them—if only we’ll let them.” —Jane Seymour, actress, author, and co-founder of the Open Hearts Foundation

Praise for The Truth About Horses by Christy Cashman

“With all of the unpredictable thrill of a horseback ride, The Truth about Horses took me deep into the mind of a teenage girl searching for her post-traumatic truth. It is a beautiful, moving story that I’m glad to know and certain to remember.” —Harry Connick Jr., Emmy Award–winning actor and Grammy Award–winning musician

Don’t waste another moment reading these simple lines of praise. Go straight to the horse’s mouth. By the way, it’s a winner.” — Carly Simon, musician, singer, songwriter, and author

“This is a heartwarming novel about facing down the perils of adversity. It’s also an examination of how and why we become stronger at the broken places. Christy Cashman has written a book for everyone, young and old, who wants to know about the elemental gallop of the heart.” —Colum McCann, author of Apeirogon and Let the Great World Spin

Critical Perspective Series: “Unsettling Fire: Narrative and Emotion in the Anthropocene,” Lecture by Erin James
Nov 30 @ 7:00 pm
Karpen Hall, Laurel Forum

Author Erin James will present “Unsettling Fire: Narrative and Emotion in the Anthropocene” as part of UNC Asheville’s Critical Perspective Series at 7 p.m. on Thursday, November 30 in Highsmith Student Union, rooms 225 & 226.

James is author of Narrative in the Anthropocene, which argues that a richer understanding of the forms and functions of narrative in the Anthropocene provides us with invaluable insights into how stories shape our world. Her talk draws from recent work that she has done with The Confluence Lab, an interdisciplinary team that uses the tools of the humanities and the arts—especially those related to storytelling, representation, emotions, and communication—to study environmental issues impacting rural communities. In particular, she’ll discuss the personal experience narratives of “frontliners” in the Pacific Northwest who have had to escape wildfire quickly, and what those stories can teach us about fire, stories, and our relationships to both.
