Enjoy this Conserving Carolina Speaker Series at Walnut Creek Preserve on Saturday, November 3rd when Dr. Paul Bartels presents, “The Microscopic World of Water Bears: Hidden Treasures,” at the Anne Elizabeth Suratt Nature Center at Walnut Creek Preserve at 10:30 a.m.
This is a free program, open to the public.
Dr. Bartels will give an introduction to the charismatic microfauna of moss, lichens, soil, and streams. We will cover the biology of tardigrades (water bears), methods of collecting and observing live microscopic animals, and the research on tardigrades (first in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park, now in tropical oceans worldwide) that we have been working on at Warren Wilson College for the past 17 years.
Dr. Bartels is a biophilist. E.O. Wilson coined the term “biophilia” to capture the innate need for nature that is a basic part of being human. To Paul every life form, no matter how gruesome (think tapeworms, flukes, and the corpse flower of Borneo), is beautiful and awe inspiring. Over the past 15 years, Dr. Bartels has focused his attention on under-appreciated microscopic life, particularly the mighty tardigrades or “waterbears”. These poorly studied animals have completely won him over, and sharing discoveries of new species in microscopic worlds with a bunch of eager, hard working Warren Wilson students has been a complete joy.
Dr. Bartels received his PhD from the University of California at Santa Cruz, Biology, his Masters from the University of the West Indies, Jamaica, Zoology, and his B.S. from Southern Illinois University, Zoology. He has taught at Warren Wilson College since 1986.
Contact the Southeast (Polk County) office of Conserving Carolina to register for the workshop or for more information, 828-859-5060, or Pam Torlina at [email protected].

The Haen Gallery, located in downtown Asheville, North Carolina, is proud to present their 12th Annual Lynn Boggess Exhibition. The exhibit will run through November.
Lynn Boggess is one of the most unique and noteworthy American landscape painters of the 21st Century. He resides in West Virginia, a state whose diverse mountains, forests, and rivers provide abundant inspiration for the artist’s plein air paintings. In place of brushes he uses palette knives and trowels to thickly layer the broad sweeping strokes and exquisite fine detail that capture all the colors of the seasons in rushing rivers, snow covered hillsides, and thick forest vegetation. Mr. Boggess’ work is recognized internationally for its incredible three-dimensional texture, rendered solely in oils. These remarkable paintings combine elements of Abstract Expressionism and Photorealism to create a style that is totally unique and original.
The Haen Gallery in Asheville is located at 52 Biltmore Avenue between City Bakery and Chestnut. There is a parking garage at the Aloft hotel across the street, another garage just up the hill, as well as street parking.
The gallery is open Monday through Saturday 11am-6pm & Sunday 12-5pm. For more information: 828-254-8577 or www.thehaengallery.com. Gallery contacts: Chris Foley, Director; Leslie Logemann, Gallery Manager.
With locations in Asheville and Brevard, The Haen Gallery offers the work of established artists whose distinctive and unique style sets it apart from ordinary and imitative efforts. Visit the website at thehaengallery.com.
Join us on November 3 to celebrate the return of Barrel-Aged Ten FIDY Imperial Stout, available on draft and in 19.2oz stovepipe cans.
Oskar Blues Brewery stuffed Ten FIDY Imperial Stout into bourbon barrels for a minimum of eight months; allowing vanilla, oak, and bourbon flavors to permeate the pitch-black depths of FIDY. During maturation, the FIDY-plus-bourbon flavors mellow into a cool, drinkable, deeply complex brew.
We’ll also have Java Barrel-Aged Ten FIDY Imperial Stout – this jacked-up-on-coldbrew version of BA Ten FIDY is available only in taprooms!
No limits!
Live music from Chris Cooper Project from 6-8pm.
Food from Oskar Blues CHUBwagon.

We are hosting this unique 2nd annual Samhain event as one of many gatherings celebrating the turning of the seasons. Our vision is to create, like Christina Rossetti’s haunting poem, a Hallow’s Eve market for creators of magickal wares to be followed by an enchanted evening celebrating the Night of the Spirits.
All are welcome & encouraged to attend the Hallow’s Eve Market from 1PM to 6PM. Then, at 7 PM the ticketed evening festivities shall commence … a cast circle space, a ritually charged evening, a liminal space where attendees will second guess whether or not they have accidentally eaten the fruits of the Goblins and been transported to another place or time as they dance amidst Goblin decadence.
Confirmed Vendors and Artists Include:
Beyond the Bramble
Raven and Crone
Awakening Soulfire
Lotus Petals
Owelry of Oreon

Extending from West Virginia to Northern Georgia, the dry oak forest community is an intriguing ecosystem with a varied history and composition. Many of the tree species found in the dry oak community are common throughout the southern Appalachian landscape but combine to form an ecosystem unique unto itself. This program will introduce the common tree species of the dry oak forest providing basic dendrology, ecological traits, and other fun facts.
Following Rodrigue’s presentation participants will tour the Gardens to see species present in the Botanical Gardens. Come enjoy some spectacular fall colors and learn about some of the tree species that are commonly found in and around the woods of Asheville.
Jason Rodrigue holds degrees in Environmental Biology, Resource Management and Forest Soils. He is a forester with the U.S. Forest Service and a silviculturist for the National Forests in N.C., which include the Nantahala, Pisgah, Uwharrie, and Croatan National Forests. Jason’s work includes management of forest communities to maintain and improve their health, enhance habitats, restore and protect desired conditions, and supply resources to local economies.
Participants must pre-register and pre-pay for classes: 828-252-5190.
Cost for the workshop is $15 for members, $20 for non-members. Limit 15.

On Saturday, November 3, Asheville School will host the second annual Shakespeare and Friends Day, a day of workshops led by professionals from the American Shakespeare Center based in Staunton, Virginia, and the North Carolina Stage Company (NC Stage) based in Asheville, North Carolina.
Student workshops include “Shakespeare in Action,” in which attendees will learn combat techniques for the stage; “Embedded Stage Directions: Finding Clues in the Text,” during which students will combine textual analysis with performance; and “Character Play: Physical and Vocal,” a workshop that teaches students how to enhance characterization through tone, movement and stage presence.
There is also a workshop for teachers. “ROADS to Rhetoric: An Introduction to Rhetorical Figures for the Classroom” will help teachers learn to walk their students through rhetorical devices used by Shakespeare that can help students garner a deeper understanding of the characters and context of his works.
The workshops are open to students in eighth through twelfth grades, and any teacher interested in learning about strategies to use in text analysis in their classroom.
All Asheville School students and families should email Kathy Leiner at [email protected] to sign up instead of using the ticket link.
