Gong Meditation
Feb 23 @ 6:30 pm – 8:00 pm
The Shift Studio

$15 Suggested Donation.
Last Saturdays with Jagdeesh
Please RSVP if possible: www.theshiftstudio.com/register

The gong impacts the body and its meridians. It releases blocks, reduces tension and stimulates circulation. The result of this is a reorganization of the emotional energy and feelings that are tied into the body structure.

The gong changes the feelings that are blocked by cutting the thoughts that sustain and recreate the feelings. As a person comes back to normal, they notice a great difference between their current bodily feelings and the ones they are used to. This can be frightening, arousing, exciting or delightful. That will depend on the individual.

We will stretch, meditate and bathe in the sound of the gong to release ,relax and restore our being.
Optional: BRING A COMFORT OF HOME, LIKE A BLANKET OR A PILLOW FOR YOUR ENJOYMENT

Sweeney Todd School Edition
Feb 23 @ 7:00 pm – 9:30 pm
Asheville Performing Arts Academy

Presented by the High School Academy Students, Sweeney Todd has become a bloody, worldwide success since being awarded eight Tony Awards (including Best Musical), for its Broadway premiere and has now been adapted for high school performers in Sweeney Todd School Edition. Stephen Sondheim’s and Hugh Wheeler’s (A Little Night Music, Pacific Overtures) tasty, thrilling, theatrical treat has simultaneously shocked, awed and delighted audiences across the world.

An infamous tale, Sweeney Todd, an unjustly exiled barber, returns to nineteenth-century London, seeking vengeance against the lecherous judge who framed him and ravaged his young wife. The road to revenge leads Todd to Mrs. Lovett, a resourceful proprietress of a failing pie shop, above which he opens a new barber practice. Mrs. Lovett’s luck sharply shifts when Todd’s thirst for blood inspires the integration of an ingredient into her meat pies that has the people of London lining up… and the carnage has only just begun!

This special School Edition has been masterfully adapted, working directly with Mr. Sondheim to retain the dark wit and grand scope of the original work, with a few lyric and key changes to facilitate high school productions. At the show’s core is a challenging score of epic proportion with two tasty tour-de-force roles in Sweeney and his comic female accomplice, Mrs. Lovett. Sweeney Todd School Edition is sure to be the highlight of any high school’s season.

We Insist! Max Roach’s Freedom Now Suite
Feb 23 @ 7:00 pm – 9:00 pm
Black Mountain College Museum + Arts Center

A timely restaging of We Insist! Max Roach’s Freedom Now Suite, a seminal recording from the civil rights era. The piece will be performed by the NYC / Philadelphia-based ensemble Fresh Cut Orchestra with vocalist Melanie Charles. Recorded in the fall of 1960, the Freedom Now Suite was the most openly political jazz recording ever made, combining musical prowess with political dialogue. Footloose
Feb 23 @ 7:30 pm – 10:00 pm
Asheville Community Theatre

Music by Tom Snow; Lyrics by Dean Pitchford; Stage Adaptation by Dean Pitchford and Walter Bobbie

A musical version of the 1984 film! When teenager Ren McCormack moves from Chicago to a small town, he isn’t prepared for the stifling local laws, including a ban on dancing and rock music instituted by the local preacher. As he struggles to fit in, he encourages his classmates to defy the local pastor and call for a rock’n’roll prom. Fist pump!

“Footloose” combines songs from the hit 1984 soundtrack with dynamic new songs – and though it might seem like just a lot of fun, it also celebrates the wisdom of opening minds and listening to the voices of young people. Director Jerry Crouch, music director Lynda Ferrell Shuler, and choreographer Tina Pisano-Foor have put together an incredible cast of students and adults from our community to bring “Footloose” to life!

Paul Simon Meets the Beatles (Congdon, Ratusz, Pearlman)
Feb 23 @ 7:30 pm – 10:00 pm
The Artisan of Flat Rock

Paul Simon Meets the Beatles — Performed by Alien Music Club featuring Eric Congdon,Peggy Patusz, Jonathan Pearlman, Micah Thomas, and Grant Cuthbertson.

Tickets — $10
Tickets at the door — $12
Reserved table for four people — $40 (the only way to get reserved seats without first come, first serve)

The concept of scaling down obscure and beloved Beatles tunes hatched during a conversation Peggy Ratusz shared with Jonathan Pearlman several years ago. They figured, with all the tribute and specialty shows taking place around the country, no one had truly done much with Beatles tunes, other than copy them verbatim. Pearlman has been brainstorming arrangements and Ratusz tests them out during their many acoustic shows together. Encouraged by the applause they receive each time they do their versions of classics like Oh Darlin, Two Of Us, Back in the USSR, I’ll Follow the Sun, they decided it was time to put the finishing touches on these songs and present them in a special show. Because the two of them grew up listening to, learning and playing Simon and Garfunkel’s tunes, they determined it to be a no brainer, to throw some of their greatest hits into this special night, bridging the acoustic sensibilities of Simon and Garfunkel with the rock and roll aesthetic of the Beatles. Their buddies Eric Congdon on guitar and vocals and Grant Cuthbertson on upright bass will add the missing links to the arrangements and play key roles in developing and bringing their initial concept to fruition! For ONE NIGHT ONLY: “Bridge”, Simon and Garfunkel meet the Beatles will soothe, move and groove you!

Hendersonville, NC based guitarist Eric Congdon has a low-key virtuosity. His style radiates both skill and charm. Whether playing solo or with a small ensemble, Congdon’s forceful yet delicate style doesn’t flaunt as much as it insinuates. The N.C.-based Congdon has been playing for 35 years. Congdon counts Tommy Emmanuel and Rev. Gary Davis among his influences. His latest album is called “Into the Woods.”

Grant Cuthbertson, now residing in Flat Rock, NC, has been in integral part of the music scene in Asheville for over 30 years. He is one of the main reasons why it thrives as it does. He wears many hats and provides the area’s most notable venues with quality sound equipment. An accomplished bassist both electric and upright, Grant’s love of all things Latin and Jazz as well as Blues, Swing & Gypsy Jazz, has made him one of the MOST sought after players in WNC.

Guitarist and virtuoso, Jonathan Pearlman’s (aka, JP) influences are far-reaching, absorbing Lennon/McCartney, Hendrix, Clapton, and Motown. Jazz-fusion bands of the early 70’s were also influential, like Mahavishnu Orchestra, Weather Report and Frank Zappa. He also hosts the weekly Alien Music Club Jazz Jam at Barley’s Taproom in Asheville every Thursday night. “It’s a great opportunity to meet and share musical ideas with some of the best players while at the same time mentoring young musicians!”

Peggy Ratusz is a well-established presence in the Asheville music scene. Chosen as Best Blues Artist by Mountain Xpress for ten years running, she performs an infectious, sultry, multi-layered brand of original, traditional and modern Blues, Soul and Jazz. Every drop of emotion is authentic and shows all who are present that she’s a willing servant to Jazz, Blues and Old School Soul.

Micah Thomas aka the Lovehammer, is a master of slinky dope beatz and panty dropping rhythms. He’s toured Europe with Tall Tall Trees, and continues to blaze with local institution Brushfire Stankgrass.

Asheville Symphony: Beethoven’s Pastoral feat. Alexi Kenney, Violin
Feb 23 @ 8:00 pm – 11:00 pm
Thomas Wolfe Auditorium

Sale Dates and Times:
Public Onsale : Wed, 15 Aug 2018 at 10:00 AM

Mei-Ann Chen, guest conductor
Alexi Kenney, violin

Kodály | Dances of Galánta
Dvorák | Violin Concerto
Beethoven | Symphony No. 6, “Pastoral”

The three very distinct composers presented on this concert all found great inspiration in connecting with their roots. Zoltan Kodály’s Dances of Galánta are a collection of village dances reimagined as a symphonic work and transformed with colors of the modern symphony orchestra. Next, Alexi Kenney, winner of the 2016 Avery Fisher Career Grant, brings his unique perspective to Dvorak’s Violin Concerto — full of lyricism inspired by the rich Czech folkloric tradition. The concert’s centerpiece is Beethoven’s beloved “Pastoral” symphony, which was inspired by the composer’s love of the countryside.
