We, the youth of America, are striking because decades of inaction has left us with just 11 years (or less) to solve the climate crisis. We are striking because the necessary action to achieve the common-sense and vital goal of fighting climate change is not being prioritized. We are striking because marginalized communities across our nation —especially indigenous, black, and low income communities— are already disproportionately impacted by climate change, yet, few people in positions of power have acknowledged this reality, and even fewer have begun to confront it appropriately.
We are at a turning point in history. Our futures are at stake. We call for radical legislative action to combat climate change and its countless detrimental effects on the American people. We are striking for the Green New Deal, a fair and just transition to decarbonize the US economy, and other legislative action that combats the effects of climate change. We stand in solidarity with Greta Thunberg and all youth strikers worldwide as we demand action on this issue.
Join us at Pritchard Park on March 15th for a rally, speakers, and a call to action. Rally will begin at 4:30.

Classic Maya civilization developed between CE 250-900 in Central America and is most famous for its large cities now buried under the tropical forest and its complex hieroglyphic writing system. Both of these cultural traits, attributable to elite material culture, can be traced to enduring forms of centralized governance – royal courts – who sponsored construction projects and recorded their history on stone monuments. This talk investigates how Classic Maya royals managed to establish and maintain their power through an evolving political apparatus. This discussion highlights changing architectural and communicational technologies which allowed the numerous Classic Maya kingdoms to endure for centuries. In the absence of modern communicational technologies, how did Classic Maya royals maintain their political networks? How did they secure the fealty of allies and vassals? How did they establish their sovereignty with the general population? The answer to these questions address the design of regal palaces, political stages, and politically-charged art programs, along with feasting and scribal practices.

TAMMY:
Tammy Cervantes is known as a pioneer of yoga in Cozumel, Mexico. With over 16 years’ experience teaching, and her fluency in the Spanish language she has taught in diverse venues and communities both in the U.S. and Mexico. Her students have included professional athletes, performance artists, the physically and mentally challenged, and she has especially enjoyed giving back to the community by making classes available to people who might otherwise not be able to participate. She is especially committed to her work with people in recovery from addictions, and has been blessed in assisting in the organization of the Yoga + Meditation For Recovery Conference at Esalen Institute for 8 years. She delights in offering yoga teacher trainings, and leading a vast array of retreats and workshops. Tammy’s teaching is inspired by her deep desire to assist others in cultivating present-moment awareness: she leads by living the principles of facing life bravely, by acknowledging, honoring and integrating our experiences both joyful and painful. Tammy believes that sharing this with others is her most challenging, courageous and meaningful work in life.

Cultivating Hope in Difficult Times: Overcoming Fractures in Politics and Theology
John Pavlovitz took the internet by storm with his blog: Stuff that Needs to Be Said. Fired from a megachurch, John is unafraid, bold, and full of compassion.
His popularity is not surprising, given his core message is one many are yearning to hear: hope is still possible, and kindness, inclusion, and compassion are the way forward. “Hope isn’t found in a celebrity, religious leader, or politician,” says Pavlovitz. “It’s found in the mirror.” Read more about John here: https://johnpavlovitz.com/

Adapted from Disney’s beloved animated film and the works of Rudyard Kipling, this musical for the entire family will have the jungle jumpin’ with a jazzy beat! Specially adapted from the classic Disney animated film, Disney’s The Jungle Book Live features a host of colorful characters and your favorite songs from the movie, including The Bare Necessities, and I Wanna Be Like You. Banished by the ferocious tiger, Shere Khan, a human boy named Mowgli and his panther friend, Bagheera, are on the run in the deepest parts of the jungle. On their journey, the two meet a sinister snake named Kaa, a herd of elephants and a giant bear named Baloo, who teaches them the swingin’ musical rhythms of the jungle. After surviving a dangerous encounter with a band of monkeys led by King Louie, Mowgli and Bagheera are forced to run for their lives. When Shere Khan returns, our heroes must rally their fellow animals into battle and restore peace throughout the jungle. A live, one-act stage production.

James Maddock’s status as a fixture on the Folk and Americana scene is confirmed with every listen of any song in his prodigious catalog. Relix Magazine put it this way: “James Maddock possesses the kind of lived-in craggy voice that would sound authoritative if he were singing the sports pages. Fortunately, he doesn’t need to do that because his compositional skills are a match for his delivery.”

Jessica Salfia and Emily Hilliard present 55 Strong: Inside the West Virginia Teachers’ Strike
What compelled West Virginia’s teachers to strike? How did they organize? What were teachers and allies doing during the strike? And how is the West Virginia labor movement celebrating its victory? 55 Strong: Inside the West Virginia Teachers’ Strike answers these questions and offers unique, on-the-ground insight into this historic strike. The book includes essays by teachers from around the state, organizing documents, images from the picket lines, and material on the history of the labor movement in West Virginia.
Jessica Salfia is an activist, writer, and teacher in the West Virginia public school system.
Emily Hilliard is a West-Virginia based folklorist and writer.
