The Haen Gallery, located in downtown Asheville, North Carolina, is proud to present their 12th Annual Lynn Boggess Exhibition. There will be an artist’s reception on Saturday, October 20th from 5:30-7:30pm, and the exhibit will run through November.
Lynn Boggess is one of the most unique and noteworthy American landscape painters of the 21st Century. He resides in West Virginia, a state whose diverse mountains, forests, and rivers provide abundant inspiration for the artist’s plein air paintings. In place of brushes he uses palette knives and trowels to thickly layer the broad sweeping strokes and exquisite fine detail that capture all the colors of the seasons in rushing rivers, snow covered hillsides, and thick forest vegetation. Mr. Boggess’ work is recognized internationally for its incredible three-dimensional texture, rendered solely in oils. These remarkable paintings combine elements of Abstract Expressionism and Photorealism to create a style that is totally unique and original.
The Haen Gallery in Asheville is located at 52 Biltmore Avenue between City Bakery and Chestnut. There is a parking garage at the Aloft hotel across the street, another garage just up the hill, as well as street parking.
The gallery is open Monday through Saturday 11am-6pm & Sunday 12-5pm. For more information: 828-254-8577 or www.thehaengallery.com. Gallery contacts: Chris Foley, Director; Leslie Logemann, Gallery Manager.
With locations in Asheville and Brevard, The Haen Gallery offers the work of established artists whose distinctive and unique style sets it apart from ordinary and imitative efforts. Visit the website at thehaengallery.com.

Jim loves to gamble and will offer to bet on anything and everything, from horse races to dogfights, to the health of the local parson’s wife. When Jim catches a frog, whom he names Dan’l Webster, he offers to bet $40 to anyone in Calaveras County that can produce a frog that will out-jump Dan’l. Filled with scheming, silliness and Mark Twain’s traditional wit, this classic story reaffirms that most of life’s lessons can be taught with a laugh. Approximately one hour in length.

Mother Lovin’ Country Folkin’ Blues
“All of these songs sound like something you’ve heard before — in the sense that they’re classics, not that they’re cliched. The Nouveaux Honkies confidently combine country, blues, and rock’n’roll with their signature loving and playful touch.” (No Depression/Rachel Cholst)
“The Nouveaux Honkies’ imaginative originals are well-conceived interpretations of blues and R&B classics. They have a matchless sound and perform a blistering show with their futuristic approach to music that nevertheless retains an authentic American style. With fluid guitar work, reverent vocals and a haunting violin, this act is a discovery of the year.” (Dusty Scott, Modern Guitars magazine)

by Reginald Rose
Directed by Stephanie Hickling Beckman
Sponsored by One Click Fix, Inc. and Barbara J. Bowers Law Office

$15 First Weekend, $18 online, or $21 at the door.
NO FEES for online purchases. Due to limited seating, advance purchase is highly recommended. Facilitated Post Show Discussions follow Friday and Saturday performances.
*WHERE?
THE ARTS THEATRE AT ASHEVILLE HIGH SCHOOL.
419 McDowell Street. Downtown Asheville, NC
*WHO?
Features: Michelle Alvarez, Natasha Charles, Sarah Felmet, Gary Gaines, Skyler Goff, Bjorn Goller, Molly Graves, Daniel Henry, Tracey Johnston-Crum, Maximilian Koger, Kim Richardson, and Scott Voloshin
Designs: Stephanie Hickling Beckman, Laura Lowe, Alex Smith, Katy Hudson, Kate Sullivan, Ava Hamilton, and CJ Breland
*WHAT?
Following the closing arguments in a murder trial, fully aware that a guilty verdict carries a mandatory death sentence, 12 ordinary people are charged with determining the guilt and/or innocence of a 16-year-old, inner-city teenager accused of stabbing his father to death. As these 12 Jurors, who carry with them, their own prejudices, agendas, and belief systems try desperately, to reach a unanimous decision, one Juror repeatedly calls into question the meaning of “reasonable doubt”, and what it means to be “innocent until proven guilty”. But how does one lone juror match up against another who spits out that she is “tired of facts” and talks about “those people who drink too much” and, for whom “violence is a way of life?”
When you take a screenplay written for television in 1954, called Twelve Angry Men, and produce the same script as a stage play in 2018, you’d think a lot would be lost in translation. Not so with DS!PAC’s final production of their 8th season. With the permission of the publisher, Different Strokes! has taken Reginald Rose’s original cast of 12 white men, and swapped it out for a cast of 12 very diverse jurors. Aside from the natural outcomes of obvious casting choices, nothing else has been changed from the original stage play, produced in London, in 1965.
*WHY?
Twelve Angry Jurors has a lot to say about how our own biases, including issues of racism and discrimination, affect the basis on which the American dream, and the American Judicial system were built. “Despite the age of the script, or its name, this play is timeless,” says Director Stephanie Hickling Beckman, “our socio-political climate ensures that the themes and messages of this play will resonate even more profoundly with current audiences than it did over 60 years ago, and likely, per our usual M.O., strike a few nerves along the way ”.

Excerpt from the book, “Jambands,” by Dean Budnick, 2003.“Looking for another descriptive term you can employ to characterize the music of your favorite genre-busting, improv-based group? Well, Big Block Dodge, a trio from Asheville, North Carolina, respectfully submits groosion. Frankly, the submission may not be all that respectful, but it’s succinct, evocative, and has flow.
Of course, one should expect no less — drummer Robin Tolleson is also a journalist whose work appears regularly in Downbeat, Mix, Modern Drummer, and other publications. In addition to his gig as music scribe, Tolleson is also a crackling kit player whose return to North Carolina in 1999 after a number of years in San Francisco resulted in the formation of Big Block Dodge. Tolleson, who studied under Narada Michael Walden and founded the Bay Area trio Hip Bones (an interesting group in its own right with instrumentation that features drums, bass, and flute), soon met guitarist Bill Altman. Altman had played in a number of local bands over the preceding decade, including the Crystal Zoo. Along with bass player Jeff Hinkle, a staple of the local jazz and blues scene since his mid-teens, the three began writing original instrumentals that bridged collective interests including bebop, Jeff Beck’s mid-’70s efforts, Joe Satriani, and the Aquarium Rescue Unit.
A BBD opening slot for Project Z (an apt pairing) resulted in Ricky Keller¹s invitation to record at his Southern Living at Its Finest Studios. Though by no means as ‘broken’ as the sounds of the Z, Big Block Dodge’s songs do incorporate some unconventional time signatures and passages, but they are never too dissonant and often return to groove-laden territory. Altman has described the band¹s music as ‘Gov’t Mule meets Scofield.’ Until ‘Sco-Mule’ becomes jargon rather than just a Grammy-nominated instrumental, groosion should well suffice.
Manifold Destiny (2002) * * * 1/2 A fine sampling of the group’s instrumentals that proves…manifold. Here Big Block Dodge develops some deceptively complex jazz and blues themes while also often working a robust groove.”
