British singer-songwriter Bobby Long emerges from London’s club scene with a reputation for creating memorable songs inhabited by hauntingly poetic lyrics. He relocated to New York in 2009 and has since release four CDs inhabited by powerful original material. A Winter Tale (2001)- a homage to his acoustic roots; Wishbone (2013) – a gritty opus that showcases his sorrow-filled voice and stellar guitar playing; the critically- acclaimed Ode to Thinking (2015, Compass Records), which applies his varied musical influences to a compelling collection of original songs, and the latest, Sultans, arriving on March 1, 2019.
Of him, on writer recently wrote: ” Bobby Long is a British-born singer-songwriter who wraps his voice around the truth without judgement, melancholy without tears. His gentle guitar style allows for his plaintive and honest lyrics to crash like thunder. It’s the blues with a solution. There are many comparisons to be made, but toss those aside for a moment won’t you and leave it to the man, his guitar, and you.”

The mantra for this meditation is the sound of the gong. This meditation will penetrate every cell and fiber of your body. With surrender of the mind and body to the sound, total relaxation into the deepest meditation possible will follow. Both the parasympathetic and sympathetic nervous systems will be regenerated. This evening will be comprised of some gentle movement, breathwork and then meditation with the gong.

Andrea returns to Asheville to support their new book, LORD OF THE BUTTERFLIES.
In a fierce oscillation between activism and love, Andrea Gibson’s newest literary triumph, Lord of the Butterflies, is a masterful showcase from the renowned poet whose writing and performances have captured the hearts of millions. An artful and nuanced look at gender, romance, loss, and family, this is also a book of protest. While rioting against gun violence, homophobia, and white supremacy, Gibson celebrates gender expansion, queer love, and the will to stay alive. Each emotion in Lord of the Butterflies is deft and delicate, resting within imagery heavy enough to sink the heart, while giving the body wings to soar.
Winner of the first ever Women of the World Poetry Slam in 2008, ANDREA GIBSON remains one of the most captivating performers in the spoken word poetry scene today. Known for pulling hearts out of chests to either wrench or kiss, Gibson has authored four full-length collections of poems, an illustrated book of their most memorable quotes (Take Me With You, Penguin 2018), and has released seven beloved albums. Gibson regularly sells out 500+ capacity standing room only venues to eager audiences, mouthing along every word, further popularizing the art form and creating a space for each person in the room to feel, and to heal.
“Gibson’s poems…are forthright and pithy, putting into words the feelings of anyone who has
been angry, or outraged, or embarrassed, or in love.” — STAR TRIBUNE
“Andrea Gibson is an amazing queer, spoken-word poet who can make you weep with a heart wrenching love poem and then swiftly inspire you to action with a powerful political poem.” — Seventeen

Community Lecture this Friday!
Preparing for a Culture of Empathy: Embracing All Our Children
by Karine Finser
March 22nd at 7:30 pm
Open to the public
Basement of AWS Magnolia Campus
531 Haywood Rd. Asheville, NC 28806
We have a lot to learn from our children. Karine Munk Finser will share some of the stories children tell in paintings and words, that bring to light some of the challenges children carry when they struggle in the classroom. The importance of welcoming our children into a culture of kindness, imagination, and joy, supporting their emotional intelligence lies at the heart of Waldorf Education. Rudolf Steiner thought that we are preparing for a future time when it will be impossible to walk by a fellow human being who suffers without feeling it as our own suffering. This evening will be an opportunity to look at our inherent creativity, and how we can discover empathetic practices to meet our children both as parents and as teachers.

“Tap dancing will never be the same.” (The Times)
This is not just tap. Experience high voltage, rugged, raw talent in the tap dance phenomenon that has taken the world by storm. Dein Perry’s Tap Dogs takes the stage with its “positively electrifying” (The New York Observer) trademark blend of live music and tap dance like you’ve never seen before.
“Part theatre, part dance, part rock concert, and part construction site” (BBC), the show is crammed with high-energy dance, theatrical performance, and live music. Whether in water, upside-down, or jumping through scaffolding, the Tap Dogs have been performing to the beat of their own drum for over 20 years.
Winner of over 15 international awards including an Olivier Award and an Obie Award, this global musical smash hit has appeared in more than 330 cities on six continents and has been seen live by over 12 million people. A worldwide television audience of more than 3.4 billion saw 1,000 Tap Dogs performing in the Opening Ceremony of the Sydney Olympics.

Max Williams often gets compared to Tom Waits in vocal style and “vibe,” mixing blues, indie, jazz and punk with a mix of traditional and sometimes electronic instrumentation.
He recently relocated from Washington State to North Carolina this winter and wants to make the rounds playing anywhere and everywhere between February and May in the greater Ashville area so we invited him to play in the Taphouse.
