Grovewood Village is housed in the historic weaving and woodworking complex of Biltmore Industries, a noteworthy enterprise in the history of American Craft and textiles, founded by Edith Vanderbilt and two inspired teachers, Eleanor Vance and Charlotte Yale. At the height of its success in the late 1920s, Biltmore Industries had a total of 40 looms in steady operation, producing bolts of some of the finest handwoven wool fabric in the country. Orders were shipped as far as China and Uruguay, and customers included the likes of Thomas Edison, Henry Ford, Helen Keller, and several U.S. presidents and first ladies.

This Week’s Craft Beer Special is Fruh Kolsch. A style distinctive to Cologne, the name Kölsch is protected by law so that only beers that meet a certain criteria can bear the name. Kölsch beers must be brewed in the metropolitan area of Cologne, be pale in color, top-fermented, hop-accented and filtered. Früh Kölsch is an extremely drinkable beer with an unsurpassed balance of malt and soft, delicate hops. Pale gold in color with a lasting head, the beer has a hoppy, dry finish from the use of Hallertau and Tettnag hops. Früh continues to be brewed using the original recipe from 1904 that has been passed down through five generations.

Sahti Release
Aug 22 @ 4:00 pm – 9:00 pm
Catawba Brewing Company

Never heard of a Sahti beer before? Well… this farmhouse ale with roots in Finland is definitely a hard beer to find here in the United States. “First brewed by peasants in the 1500s, mashing (steeping of grains) went down in wooden barrels, and then that mash would be scooped into a hand-carved wooden trough (a kuurna) with a bed of juniper twigs that acted as a filter. The bung at the bottom of the kuurna would be pulled to allow the sweet wort (liquid infusion from the mash) to pass through the twig filter, followed by wort recirculation and a hot water sparge (rinsing of the grains), all of which created a juniper infusion of sorts.”

Debby Schriver presents Whispering in the Daylight
Aug 22 @ 6:00 pm – 7:00 pm
Malaprop's Bookstore/Cafe

Debby Schriver presents Whispering in the Daylight: The Children of Tony Alamo Christian Ministries and Their Journey to Freedom

“This book is much more than a tome about the incredible amount of harm done to children isolated in destructive groups and movements; it is a testimony to the courage and resilience of individual souls, even when they are very young. . . . Whispering in the Daylight is compelling for anyone concerned with child welfare and individual freedom.” –Steve K. D. Eichel, president, International Cultic Studies Association

“This is a fascinating depiction of a destructive cult. What is entirely new is that Schriver provides the reader with insightful and emotionally gripping reporting into the cult and post-cult journey of second-generation former cult members (SGAs). . . .The section on the interviews with the children in which they describe their own post-cult growth is particularly profound.” –Lorna Goldberg, director, Institute for Psychoanalytic Studies

This book is available for purchase in-store, by phone, or online by visiting https://www.malaprops.com/book/9781621903864

We ask that you purchase the books you want to be signed at our events from Malaprop’s. When you do this you are not only supporting the work it takes to run an events program, you are also telling the publishers that they should keep sending authors here.
Can’t make it to the store for the event? Call us or order the book on our website in advance, and we’ll get it signed for you. Make sure you write your preferences in the comments if you purchase online.

Raising the Dead: A Class on Early Modern English Necromancy
Aug 22 @ 6:00 pm – 7:30 pm
Asheville Raven & Crone

Raising the Dead: A History of Early Modern Necromancy

The early modern age of 1500-1700 was a period of European colonial expansion into the so-called ‘New World’, civil wars, famine, and plague: life could indeed be ‘nasty, brutish, and short’. Amidst such fragile mortality, people prayed for their deceased, petitioned elevated Christian martyrs, witnessed ghosts, and whispered of black magic in midnight graveyards.

This talk investigates the roles and powers of the dead in Western occult philosophy and magical practices: from magical funerary customs to corpses as spell components, and from the exorcism and summoning of ghosts and spirits to early sensationalist reports of the customs of various indigenous peoples of the Americas.

Finally, this talk will investigate the diabolical associations of necromancy and “nigromancy” with witchcraft and demonology, offering analysis of a number of pre-modern rituals and techniques involving shades of the dead.

Dr. Alexander Cummins is professional diviner and consultant sorcerer as well as an historian of early modern magic who feels the dead should be afforded a chance to speak for themselves. His work focuses on grimoires, folk magic, astrology, divination, and sorcery as well as, of course, necromancy and demonology. He is reachable through his website http://www.alexandercummins.com and curates a storehouse of scanned magical texts at http://www.grimoiresontape.tumblr.com

Group Glass Exhibition, REFLECTIONS, Momentum Gallery
Aug 23 all-day
Momentum Gallery
Group Glass Exhibition, REFLECTIONS, Momentum Gallery @ Momentum Gallery | Asheville | North Carolina | United States

Asheville, NC—Momentum Gallery in downtown Asheville is pleased to participate in the Summer of Glass, a WNC celebration of glass art in conjunction with the Dale Chihuly exhibition at the Biltmore Estate, May-October 2018. The gallery exhibition, Reflections (July 1-August 25) nods to the Gilded Age, a period during the late 19th Century when the Biltmore Estate was conceived and constructed by railway tycoon George Vanderbilt. This curated exhibition features recent work by some of the country’s top contemporary glass artists with many of the works in the collection speaking to Vanderbilt’s aesthetic of opulence, grandeur, and beauty. Other conceptual pieces examine concepts of memory and history, referencing the “downstairs” or “behind the scenes” of the palatial mansion as well. Sophisticated sculptures and stylish wall pieces incorporate a variety of glass techniques and explore the intricate detailing, ornamentation, and drama indicative of the Gilded Age. This Exhibit is free and open to the public.

Reflections includes works by: Thor & Jennifer Bueno, Amber Cowan, Jennifer Halvorson, Alli Hoag, Joanna Manousis, Andy Paiko, Kit Paulson, Pablo Soto, and Tim Tate.
