Asheville Habitat ReStore Spring Sale
May 18 @ 9:00 am – 6:00 pm
Asheville Habitat ReStore

Since 1990, Asheville Area Habitat for Humanity has
operated a resale store to help fund its building programs. Significant ongoing
community support by shoppers, donors, and volunteers has positioned the Asheville
Habitat ReStore as a leader among 900+ ReStores nationwide and as an annual Best
of WNC winner.
To thank the community for its loyalty, the ReStore at 31 Meadow Road will offer 25%
off storewide from 9am until 6pm on Saturday, May 18, during its annual Spring
Customer Appreciation Sale. All merchandise – including furniture, housewares,
appliances, building materials, music, art, antiques and more – will be 25% percent off!
98.1 The River will be onsite from 9-11am, and free hot dogs, wings, and soft drinks will
be available between noon and 2pm.
While providing residents with a source for affordable building supplies, furniture and
more the ReStore (and its Deconstruction program) diverts 1,800 tons of usable
materials from local landfills annually. Additionally, the ReStore engages more than 100
volunteers each week, providing residents with an opportunity to help address the
region’s affordable housing crisis – without lifting a hammer on a construction site. In

Weaver Blvd. in Weaverville, NC.

Dressing for the Occasion: a New Temporary Exhibit
May 18 @ 9:00 am – May 19 @ 5:00 am
Carl Sandburg Home National Historic Site

A new temporary exhibit titled “Dressing for the Occasion: Mid-Century Sandburg as Celebrity and Family Man” opens on May 13, 2019. The exhibit, which runs through October, is part of the Sandburg Home tour and features clothing and accessories from both the park’s permanent collection and loaned items from the Sandburg family.

“Dressing for the Occasion” offers visitors a window into the style, culture, and feel of mid-century America. The family’s clothing and accessories weave together the roles of Carl Sandburg as a prominent writer, celebrity, father, and husband. This temporary exhibit offers an exciting opportunity for the public to view objects that are normally in storage or in the possession of Sandburg family members. Tours of the Sandburg Home are offered daily from 9:30 am to 4:30 pm. Tickets are available first come, first served, each day from the visitor information area in the ground level of the Sandburg Home.

Nearly every room in the historically furnished house museum will be included in the exhibit. Visitors will see the characteristic scarves Carl Sandburg wore as he played his guitar and sang folk songs to entertain his family and guests, the dress Lilian Sandburg wore to meet President Lyndon B. Johnson, and many other mid-century pieces worn by the Sandburgs and their daughters. Historic photographs, paired with the clothing, will provide context.

Upper French Broad River Clean-Up Day!
May 18 @ 9:00 am – 3:00 pm
Headwaters Outfitters Outdoor Adventures

The French Broad River Clean up remains the best volunteer gig in town: a canoe ride down the river, along with a complimentary breakfast, lunch, and all the garbage bags you can fill. Since the inception of “The Upper French Broad River Clean Up Day” in 1992, the annual river clean-up has netted more than 2,900 garbage bags, 4,500 old tires and roughly 13 additional tons of trash along the upper French Broad. Over 3,000 volunteers have participated in the event, many of them returning year after year.

*RESERVATIONS FOR VOLUNTEER SPOT NECESSARY*
Volunteers show up at Headwaters at 9:00 am and will be treated to a light breakfast before being shuttled to a launching area in Rosman. Everyone will be assigned canoes (no kayaks please), paddles, life jackets, and garbage bags. Participants should bring sturdy gloves, river shoes and tools such as long-handled barbecue tongs to grab trash with. Its always a good idea to bring a change of clothing for afterwards!

After the clean-up wraps up, volunteers are served a lunch at Headwaters. Lunch is a light-hearted affair, with volunteers swapping tales of creatures hitchhiking in garbage bags and unusual finds excavated from the riverbed. Though support for the clean-up has remained steady despite hard economic times, new donations of cash or food are always welcome. Feeding all the hungry trash collectors can get expensive. We could not do this event without the gracious help of local businesses. I think they realize, as do we, that the clean-up has an economic as well as an environmental benefit. When the river is pristine-looking, visitors come more often, stay longer, and spend more money locally, which helps all of us who live and work here.

Wildflower Watch Day Hike – FULL!
May 18 @ 9:00 am – 4:00 pm
MountainTrue

Thank you for your interest in the Wildflower Watch Day Hike, but the hike is full. Please contact Catie Morris at [email protected] or 828-258-8737 ext 201 if you would like to be put on the waiting list. If spots open up, you’ll be contacted via email.

About the hike:

Join us for a lovely 5.5-mile hike along the Mountains-to-Sea Trail at Rattlesnake Lodge. Our Public Lands Ecologist, Bob Gale will lead this hike and share with us his extensive knowledge of the flora and fauna of the region. This trail boasts more than thirty varieties of flowers, including dwarf larkspur, Jack-in-the-pulpit, and blue cohosh to name a few. This time of year is prime for spotting these wildflowers, as well as seeing, or hearing, a number of warblers, vireos, and other birds that have returned from their winter in Central and South America. This hike will take us past the ruins of Rattlesnake lodge: a summer home built in 1903 for Dr. Chase P. Ambler. The hike is moderate, and we will take frequent stops to investigate any birds, wildflowers or other items of interest that we find along the way!
