ABOUT US

APB has been sending books to folks incarcerated in the Southeast since 1999. We currently send books to people in jails and prisons across North and South Carolina.

APB is a prison abolitionist project. We send books to folks who are locked up because it is one of the best ways we have found to show solidarity with them. As a project rooted in anti-authoritarian politics, we view prison as a tool the State uses to uphold an unjust social and economic order based in large part on white supremacy. When dealing with a system that thrives on dehumanization and isolation, finding ways to connect with and meet the every day needs of incarcerated people is a crucial part of challenging the legitimacy of this repressive institution.

Asheville Fringe Kick Off Party
Jan 20 @ 5:00 pm – 9:00 pm
The Lazy Diamond

We’re kicking off the 17th annual Asheville Fringe fest with fearless fabulousness! This year’s fest is bigger than ever and so is our free Opening Party. Art, music, dance, weirdness, surprises!

Start off with Peacock Party from 5-7 pm. They will seduce with their Dark Cabaret love songs and make music into performance art. Louly Peacock’s original songs weave tales of love, loss, and redemption.

Starting at 7:30 pm we will continue at the Vance Monument, Broadway/Biltmore Ave and College Ave. with:
Inoxia is an exorcism ritual using movement, sound, film and community participation that will penetrate the psycho-geography of a monument, cleanse the space and consider its futures.

Escaping Altamont: A Film by Robert Ladislas Derr. Visualizing the idea of escape, thirty-seven people — the number of years Wolfe lived — break through a wall of paper. The soundtrack of ripping paper among songs with “escape” in the lyrics makes context to the visual and experiential.

A Fringe tradition by now, the Accidentals Asheville are an improvisational, movement based company inspired by alternative performance spaces such as parking lots, sidewalks, bowling alleys and bars.

Understanding Compassion Fatigue
Jan 20 @ 7:00 pm – 8:30 pm
The Hendersonville Community Co-op

Are you feeling overly stressed in your rescue work?

Compassion Fatigue is a problem that is commonly seen among caregivers. Because their work puts them in situations where they often observe suffering, it is not unusual to see some of our most skilled, caring, and compassionate “helpers” fall victim to compassion fatigue.

Please join Maria Stine for a workshop about the importance of managing stress related to animal welfare and rescue work. Her therapy practice, The Compassion Project, is committed to supporting people who care about animals. Her presentation will share helpful knowledge that will enlighten, support and advise us in our rescue work.

This event is open to the public and although it is geared towards animal rescue, there is sure to be helpful insight for everyone.
