Change happens. Our lives take twists and turns. Our gardens outgrow themselves. Plants die. Our interests change and new enthusiasms sprout up.or we find ourselves faced with a brand new gardening space. This workshop will help us take a fresh look at our gardens/gardening spaces and make adaptations that suit the current situation in our garden – as a gardener and a human being.

The talk will take a deeper look at overall garden design considerations – factoring in available time and space, site conditions and changing site conditions, agility, budget, soil life, and the joy factor. Free, but please pre-register at the Garden Shop or call 828-645-3937.

Hemphill Bald Hike
Feb 9 @ 10:00 am – 3:00 pm
Southern Appalachian Highlands Conservancy

Join the Southern Appalachian Highlands Conservancy on a hike to the breathtaking heights of Hemphill Bald in Cataloochee Ranch. Hemphill Bald, directly adjacent to the Great Smoky Mountains National Park, was the first tract of land to be conserved by SAHC in the Cataloochee area in 1993. Translated from Cherokee into English, the word “Cataloochee” means “wave upon wave.” From the summit hikers will indeed be able to see wave upon wave of Blue Ridge Mountains including other SAHC-conserved properties such as the 8,000 acre Waynesville Watershed (protected in 2005); the Plott Balsam conservation easement protecting the top of Plott Balsam Mountain (2003 and 2006); the Crawford Creek conservation easements at the base of Cold Mountain (2000); and the high ridgetop properties of one of SAHC’s primary farmland focus areas: Sandy Mush, Buncombe County.

Registration has filled for this hike, if you’d like to be on the wait list email [email protected]

Little One-Inch
Feb 9 @ 10:00 am – 11:00 am
Asheville Community Theatre

Our Saturdays at ACT series combines terrific shows for children and their adults with tickets that are affordable (they’re only $7.00)!

On Saturday, February 9, we host Lisa Sturz and Red Herring Puppets for Little One-Inch, a beautiful and magical tale. Lisa shares: “Little One-Inch was my favorite story growing up. My Dad, who was stationed in Okinawa during World War II, passed on to me his deep love of the Japanese language, people and culture. He read this story to me. I was enchanted by the magical elements, inspired by the idea that a little person could achieve great things, and reassured that love can blossom in unlikely circumstances.”

Little One-Inch is the story of an old couple whose prayers are answered when they find a small baby by the side of the road. When he comes of age, tiny Little One-Inch sets off on the adventure of a lifetime where he meets a princess, defends her against a dumbstruck ogre and, for his bravery, grows when the princess uses the ogre’s magical hammer on him.

You may think your child won’t sit still for a 45 minute show, and guess what? Wiggling, whispering, pointing, and exclaiming are all 100% wonderful!

Crowne Plaza Hotels & Resorts Asheville

The Junior League of Asheville, one of Buncombe County’s oldest women-led volunteer organizations, will host a Volunteer Expo on February 9, 2019.

Modeled after a job fair, the Volunteer Expo is an opportunity for residents of Western North Carolina to learn about local nonprofits, their volunteer needs, and other ways to support these organizations. To make this event a success, the League is pleased to partner with over 60 local nonprofits, including organizations that specialize in addressing health, poverty, legal aid, environmental stewardship, women’s issues, arts, civic leadership, technology, education, and animal welfare.

Local nonprofits are an incredible asset to our community and are responsible for much of Buncombe County’s progress. We believe that the Volunteer Expo will be a great opportunity for Western North Carolina residents to connect with outstanding nonprofit organizations, learn about what they are doing, and how they can contribute (time, talent, or treasure).

If you are interested in becoming a sponsor, please contact [email protected]

The Junior League of Asheville (JLA), is an organization of women committed to promoting voluntarism, to developing the potential of women, and to improving the community through the effective action and leadership of trained volunteers. Its purpose is exclusively educational and charitable.
