Brazilian Zouk Intermediate & Beginner Level Classes
May 13 @ 7:00 pm – 10:00 pm
Veda Studios

:>>>>> 7pm Intermediate level Zouk <<<<<:

This class is specifically designed for students who already have a good understanding of the basics of Zouk. We ask that students refrain from attending this until they have had at least one full 8 week series in Beginner Zouk or have had other previous Zouk training.

:>>>>> 8pm Beginner level Zouk <<<<<:

A great class for Beginners and more advanced students alike. This class provides the essential techniques for a great foundation in Zouk so is perfect for any level student. We break down some of the basic steps and key principles of Zouk to help students become mindful and graceful partner dancers.

:>>>>> 9pm Zouk Social for ALL Levels <<<<<:

This is an opportunity to practice the skills learned in class and begin to play with musicality and connection. Open for anyone who has attended either class and free of charge.

Taught by Brad Meccia, of Knoxville’s Armada Zouk and Michele Rosa Gee.

**Anyone can lead or follow and you do NOT need to bring a partner to class.

**Please bring dance shoes or socks to wear for class. Barefoot is not ideal for this style of dance.

**Drop-in’s are welcome, but please do keep in mind that this is a progressive series, so students gain the most from committing to the entire 8 weeks.

$10 per class or $15 for both. Packages through Veda Studios also available for even bigger discounts.

We LOVE new dancers and our community is very welcoming, so bring a friend :)

Pelvis with Idelle Packer
May 13 @ 7:00 pm – 8:30 pm
DanceLab Asheville

DanceLab will transition from April to May with the PELVIS facilitated by Idelle Packer, a lover of dance, choreography, contact improvisation, somatic movement practices and an Alexander Technique extraordinaire.

How does motion translate through the pelvis in rolling and spirals and how do the limbs reach away from the pelvis as a point of contact to create lightness, readiness and surprise in contact dancing? Learn through observation, palpation, somatic exercises, visualization, solo exploration and partnering in guided contact improvisation scores. Explore the boney anatomical structures that make up the male and female pelvis and its function in relationship to sacrum and coccyx, lumbar, thoracic and cervical spine, head and shoulder girdle/upper limbs and the lower limbs and feet. Through the lens of the pelvis, discover a new perspective of the body as a whole.

Each session is independent, yet knowledge from one will build understanding and movement skills for each subsequent lab. Highly recommended to attend all 3!

May 13 @ 7:00 pm – 9:00 pm
Blue Ridge Beer Hub

Pub Theology meets on the second Monday of the month from 7:00-9:00.

Pub Theology is a group of spiritual and intellectual seekers—searchers. In the relaxed, comfortable setting of a pub (or café, or living room), we discuss God, the church, the history and politics of religion, and all that falls within the embrace of the quest for truth. Our goal is non-judgmental inquiry; safe, fair, and open discussion of ideas that have puzzled and tested humans from the beginning of civilization. Pub Theology is a “great ideas” group that welcomes people of all faiths, or none.

Appreciative Inquiry Facilitator Training (AIFT)
May 14 @ 9:00 am – May 17 @ 4:30 pm
Wedge Brewing Co. LLC

What might be possible if community of organization members were fully engaged and using their strengths to collectively achieve shared visions?

WHAT IS APPRECIATIVE INQUIRY?
Appreciative Inquiry is a collaborative, strengths-based approach to both personal and organizational development that is proving to be highly effective in thousands of organizations and communities in hundred of countries around the world. It is a way of bringing about change that shares leadership and learning, fully engaging everyone in the organization.

WHAT IS APPRECIATIVE INQUIRY FACILITATOR TRAINING©?
Appreciative Inquiry Facilitator Training© (AIFT) engages participants to learn about the foundations of Appreciative Inquiry as well as the skills to facilitate inquiry sessions. At the end of this intensive Appreciative Inquiry Facilitator Training (AIFT), participants will understand how to guide organizations, groups, and communities to consciously and deliberately shift their collective way of being and seeing to an appreciative approach, that will help them focus on what’s right in their organization, group or community, rather than on what’s wrong.

This Appreciative Inquiry foundations course includes mini-lectures, and experiential learning (individual, pairs, trios, small group, and large group) as well as auditory and visual materials to enhance the learning experience. Each day has a morning and afternoon session; a morning and afternoon break; and one hour for lunch.

TRAINING IS DESIGNED FOR:
Leaders in businesses and corporations, community development, educational organizations governmental organizations, and nonprofit organizations–in short, anyone who wants to learn how to facilitate Appreciative Inquiry.

REGISTRATION INCLUDES:
Pre-workshop reading, four full days of instruction, lunch, instructional materials (binder and book), supervised practicum for AI Facilitator certification, and support/mentoring for one year.

Please note: Your trainers are available as mentor to you during your practicum – at no extra cost. They will also be part of the panel that reviews your practicum once it has been submitted. It is standard practice for the panel to engage you in a conversation about your work once you have submitted your practicum. Typically, they will respond with questions, to deepen their and your mutual understanding of and learning about AI. The practicum review is therefore a dialogical and interactive process.

Important: Participants that earn their certification through The Center for Appreciative Inquiry (CAI) are eligible to be included in the Center for Appreciative Inquiry’s Directory for FREE for the duration for their certification. Directory profiles are easy to create and update and will make you locatable by our worldwide audience.

Dressing for the Occasion: a New Temporary Exhibit
May 14 @ 9:00 am – May 15 @ 5:00 am
Carl Sandburg Home National Historic Site

A new temporary exhibit titled “Dressing for the Occasion: Mid-Century Sandburg as Celebrity and Family Man” opens on May 13, 2019. The exhibit, which runs through October, is part of the Sandburg Home tour and features clothing and accessories from both the park’s permanent collection and loaned items from the Sandburg family.

“Dressing for the Occasion” offers visitors a window into the style, culture, and feel of mid-century America. The family’s clothing and accessories weave together the roles of Carl Sandburg as a prominent writer, celebrity, father, and husband. This temporary exhibit offers an exciting opportunity for the public to view objects that are normally in storage or in the possession of Sandburg family members. Tours of the Sandburg Home are offered daily from 9:30 am to 4:30 pm. Tickets are available first come, first served, each day from the visitor information area in the ground level of the Sandburg Home.

Nearly every room in the historically furnished house museum will be included in the exhibit. Visitors will see the characteristic scarves Carl Sandburg wore as he played his guitar and sang folk songs to entertain his family and guests, the dress Lilian Sandburg wore to meet President Lyndon B. Johnson, and many other mid-century pieces worn by the Sandburgs and their daughters. Historic photographs, paired with the clothing, will provide context.

Photos Day or Night: The Archive of Hugh Mangum by Sarah Stacke
May 14 @ 12:00 pm – 1:00 pm
Malaprop’s Bookstore/Café

Photos Day or Night is an intimate look at the life and work of early 20th-century American photographer Hugh Mangum. Mangum was born in 1877 at the end of Reconstruction, and died in 1922, three years after World War I and two years after women gained the right to vote. During his lifetime, the final battles of the Indian Wars were waged, and the first law limiting the number of immigrants allowed in the U.S. was passed. The personalities in Mangum’s images collectively, and often majestically, symbolize the triumphs and struggles of this pivotal era. An itinerant photographer primarily working in his home state of North Carolina and the Virginias, he cultivated clientele from across racial and economic divides. Though the American South of his era was marked by disenfranchisement, segregation, and inequality, he portrayed all his sitters with candor and heart. Above all, he showed them as individuals. A century after their making, his photographs allow us a penetrating gaze into faces of the past; and in a larger sense, they offer an unusually insightful glimpse of the South at the turn of the 20th century.

Moderated by author Sarah Stacke.
